Boarding School WITHOUT flexi boarding?

looking4clues · 19/05/2014 17:39

I am looking for a school for my niece. She will need to be a full time boarder as her parents are based in Bangkok. We would prefer a school which does not have the vast majority of girls disappearing back home at the weekend due to the flexi boarding option. Are there any schools left that do not have flexi boarding? Any suggestions welcome. Thank you.

How old is she and where would you/guardian be based ?

hardestdecisionever · 19/05/2014 17:59

Benenden School in Kent is a well known girls full boarding school without day pupils or flexi boarding. It is set in a nice location in the countryside but still has good links to London and airports.

happygardening · 19/05/2014 18:02

Coed or single sex? Bright? Sporty? Musical?
Senior Coed: Kings Canterbury is day or full boarding not flexi weekly etc but full boarders well in the majority, ditto Marlborough College, slightly less selective but known for sport and a broad education St Edwards, then there's Uppingham all full boarding bar a handful of day children.
There's more but I thought I'd start the ball rolling.

Wycombe Abbey, pretty full on boarding last I heard with a very small number of day girls.

michaelrB · 19/05/2014 18:08

Try Ashford School in Kent where most boarders are full time..

Bowlersarm · 19/05/2014 18:11

Eastbourne College.

LIZS · 19/05/2014 18:14

Woldingham ?

happygardening · 19/05/2014 18:27

michaeirB according to their own website Ashford School has approximately 150 boarders and the ISI report states over 800 children in the whole school. Their website also states children can go home for the weekend.

Tudor Hall, Oxfordshire.

toastedteacake · 19/05/2014 18:33

St Mary's, Calne

I've stayed in the boarding accommodation at Tudor Hall and I found it very basic and quite out of date. I found the boarding houses quite drab and uninspiring. This was a few years ago now, unless it has had a refurb I wouldn't pay the money for boarding there.

happygardening · 19/05/2014 18:59

I think Eastbourne is weekly as well as full boarding and only 50% board.

Thank you for the replies/advice/questions. I should have provided more info in my post so here are my responses.

She is 12. Looking for a school for 2015 for Year 9. Guardian is in Devon.

Too late for Benenden. List for 2015 and 2016 is now closed. Waiting list for 2016.

Parents want a SS school.

She is an all rounder, good worker, team player although prefers tennis/swimming to team sports. A B+ type of girl so Wycombe Abbey not an option.

Have read here that Woldingham full boarders are mainly international students and that most girls are flexi? We want to avoid weekends surrounded by too many international students of one nationality.

Ashford Kent and Eastbourne College are co-ed so not an option.

Tudor Hall is on the list as I understand they do not offer flexi boarding. Planning to arrange a visit in June so we will see what their accommodation looks like.

I will give St Mary's Calne a call to see what their numbers are. However, I thought they may be too selective?

Royal High Bath, Cheltenham ?

Bowlersarm · 19/05/2014 19:13

Woldngham is definitely flexi.

Eastbourne isn't full boarding, but isn't flexi either, has a number of exeat weekends.

Lottiedoubtie · 19/05/2014 19:16

Tudor hall, accomodation is shabby in some areas- girls board in year groups so change house each year and dorm each term. Which does mean you're not stuck in the same shabby bit for 5 years Wink

It isn't an ultra modern swanky ensuite rooms sort of place, although there has been refurbishment in recent years and the sixth form block is very new (only 'shabbier parts' are used for school holiday letting). That doesn't mean it isn't a fab school though! Pastoral care is outstanding, education great for lots of different types of girls, not overly selective academically, lots of tennis and an abundance of other extra curricular activities.

Patricia909 · 19/05/2014 19:16

Have you considered Sherborne Girls?

happygardening · 19/05/2014 19:16

OP your going to struggle to find a SS full boarding school without loads of international students. The handful of over subscribed full boarding super selectives might have a smallish number of international students but as the number of UK citizens with £35+K to spend on school feels is dwindling all the time more and more schools are accepting international students.

Lottiedoubtie · 19/05/2014 19:18

It's also majority british pupils, and I do mean a huge majority. No weekly or flexi boarding.

PotteringAlong · 19/05/2014 19:22

Malvern st James?

looking4clues · 19/05/2014 19:28

I have not considered Sherborne Girls. Does it offer flexi boarding?

She recently attended an open weekend at one school and complained that the place was so quiet as most students had gone home for the weekend.

We are OK about international students but want a good mix of nationalities and not too many from one group! I did read here about one school where at weekends everyone speaks Chinese!

looking4clues · 19/05/2014 19:30

Malvern website sounds like it is flexi boarding. Thanks

Any thoughts on The Godolphin School, Salisbury? Visited there last year and really liked it and their excellent head who has recently moved to Benenden.

Just some background. We have been looking for schools for over a year but it is only from reading postings here on Mumsnet recently that I have discovered this issue about the negative impact of flexi boarding on full boarders. My niece is currently at Taunton International where everyone is a full boarder. So weekends are busy and full of activity. She wants the same at her new school.

St Edward's Oxford - does have day pupils but they have to stay until 9pm.
