Boarding School WITHOUT flexi boarding?

looking4clues · 19/05/2014 17:39

I am looking for a school for my niece. She will need to be a full time boarder as her parents are based in Bangkok. We would prefer a school which does not have the vast majority of girls disappearing back home at the weekend due to the flexi boarding option. Are there any schools left that do not have flexi boarding? Any suggestions welcome. Thank you.

Cheltenham Ladies? A friend's DD is going there in September to full board, and neighbours of ours have two girls there. None of them will come home other than at exeats and holidays.

Cobham Hall (Kent) is an all girls boarding school. It does have day pupils as well but think the majority are full boarding. No experience of the school though.

Just had a look at the Sherborne website. Looks as if they only offer full boarding.

Heathfield at Ascot is full boarding and no day girls. Results on the up and probably has spaces. Few from abroad when I last looked. It is a small school but handy for Heathrow and London. Superb Art and close knit community. Girls get more flexible boarding in 6th form but only in upper 6th and it is a privilege. Girls are very busy with school activities in lower 6th.

Downe House? I don't know anything about it (I've got boys) but a few girls from our old prep school went there and they lived too far away to be anything but full boarders.
I've met a few at Godolphin many travel quite a way to get to it, I wasn't even aware it took boarders, if you're looking for full boarding you need to investigate this side very carefully.

Downe House ?

xpost with HG.

looking4clues · 20/05/2014 14:28

I thought Downe House is very selective, for straight As type of girls.

I am not sure the academic bar is extremely high at Downe house, it's selective but not super selective? On a par with Benenden? I think Cheltenham Ladies is more selective (more like Wycombe in terms of difficultly to get into especially after the 11 plus intake).

Royal High School Bath although a very nice school and could fit the bill academically I know has few full boarders below the 6Th form.

looking4clues · 20/05/2014 18:50

Royal High School Bath has flexi boarding so not an option. Looks as if the shortlist for full boarding girls schools is: CLC, Tudor Hall, St Mary's Shaftesbury, Sherborne Girls, Heathfield.

Add Downe House to that list.

That's a pretty good short list! Tudor would be my pick for sure.

looking have sent you a PM.

Cornygirl · 09/10/2018 16:27

@lookingforclues where did your DD end up and are you happy with the school? My shortlist very similar... thanks!

Cornygirl · 09/10/2018 16:28

@looking4clues sorry!

looking4clues · 09/10/2018 16:43

St Mary’s Shaftesbury. Very happy with the school.

Badminton in Bristol, not too far from Devon. Mix of day and borders but most borders are from overseas, lots from HK so they stay in at weekends. Lovely cosy atmosphere, small so girls all know each other. They have a pool and swim team

IdaDown · 12/10/2018 07:01

Another suggesting Sherborne Girls.

Full boarding (apart from v small number of local day).
Small safe town. School not a campus in middle of nowhere.
Train station is in town itself - so can get into London/airports v easily if need to.
Reasonably close to guardian.
All rounder school.

Opps - old thread

I have a son in Flexi boarding school. I was very concerned with the issue of having a mix of weekly , Day and full boarders. DS's school has mostly Day boarders, a few weekly and around 100+ full boarders. He is absolutely unaffected by the number of boarders who stay back during weekend. All they need is 1 or 2 friends at boarding house and they're fine. In fact he enjoys this low activity downtime on weekends.

For Bangkok, you have to figure out one most important thing. Will your niece travel back to home in all 6 stints of holidays? You've to consider flight costs too. If she would stay back during 1 week holidays, she'll need a guardian nearby. It is not easy for kids to go to a local guardians house and spend a week there.

Oops, old thread. Sorry for unsolicited advice.

Uppingham is full boarding apart from bursary local kids - very musical, know people who teach there.
