Schools normally have a few spare in the office in case of list ones. They wouldn't expect parents to pay for two just in case you lost one!

But they rarely lose them.

Ties are allegedly a different matter, but we don't have a spare of those either. They can borrow a tie too, or buy one same day, if necessary.

Thanks. Will buy just the one. Ours will be from £28, so while not cheap, not as bad as some on the thread are paying!

He'll probably have grown out of it in 6 months so there's no point in buying 2.

DD1 has had the same single blazer since starting Yr7 in 2012. She'll be getting a bigger one for September, it has done her well. We wash it every half term after mining the pockets and it was only £26.

It isn't in good enough nick to pass on to DD2 though, and at that price we will just buy her a new one.

The school are very sensible about letting them take it off when it's sweltering, during last year's hot spell they were told they would not even have to ask. The school is in an old ratty building - freezing in winter, boiling in summer, was on the list to be replaced but now will have to carry on as they are thanks to Mr Gove.

DD just has the one and it washes very well. Blazers can be taken off when the teacher gives permission.

I was wondering this as well. I'm surprised some of these blazers don't stink heavily as some people are washing/cleaning once a term. I reckon if I ate my lunch wearing the same item of clothing every day for a term, it would have food down it Grin. I will probably buy 2 but ours are a lot cheaper than most of those mentioned here and also machine washable so it's not so bad.

Purpleroxy it's a good question, but DD1's blazer is never stinky. I think she takes it off at lunch (she has packed lunch and can eat outside if she wants) and during break (when she plays a game called tugby (rugby with a tennis ball with a bunch of other girls). She also does netball training at lunch twice a week so there's a lot of blazerless time.

If I needed to, I could wash hers in the evening and have it dry by morning in the airing cupboard though.

blazers are not like other pieces of clothing - they are a second skin - you are setting yourself up for battles if you try to use more than one at a time

Purpleroxy · 20/04/2014 22:17

I was not aware of this second skin issue Grin. Thought of it as an outer layer that you took off and forgot where you put it or the outer layer that takes spillages. Perhaps I will nervously start with one and see how we go. Will also test drying time!

DS1's is a walking pencil case. Also locker key and bus pass stored in the inside pockets. Homework often found folded into four in the front pocket.

And a place to store their uniform card, which is a serious offence not to have about your person at all times...because students with empty uniform cards do not want to be caught without theirs and be accused of pulling a swift one!

Never washed a blazer in my life!

We will get x2 for ds when he starts in sept. however he is only 4 years old so I Expect a higher chance of spilling food/ paint/ or rolling in mud than say a child at secondary school.

I assume private school so maybe a wool one? Slower drying time than a polyester type one I'd think, so probably just as well to buy two

What's a uniform card?

Report
Sparklingbrook · 21/04/2014 09:31

I don't know what a uniform card is. DS doesn't have one that I am aware of.

Report
whitewitchofnarnia · 21/04/2014 09:32

One. I only wash it half termly as well

Uniform cards issued termly. Students have to carry them around and uniform infringements are signed off on them. So many infringements equal a certain punishment, a clean card equals a reward.

I'm not assuming that all schools have them, but ds's independent and all the comps and grammars that dh and I have worked in do.

Ds's blazer is pure and can be washed and dried overnight. It never smells, even though he really does sometimes!

Pure wool!

Report
Artandco · 21/04/2014 09:48

Yes his will be wool so good to hear easily washable. I just don't want to get in from work at 7pm to find its dirty and having to panic about washing and drying before morning. When a second would just be easier. Ds2 can wear after anyway

On the school newsletter, nearly every week, there's a little box reminding parents that bkazers can be machine washed and do not need dry cleaning.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/04/2014 17:58

Dd wouldn't cope with more than 1. It's a walking office. Its full of notes, buspass, timetables revision notes keys, an o ring (why?) a piece of wire (also why?) etc. each half term her hundreds of pockets are emptied and it gets washed. She goes back to school with it weighing a quarter of the weight!
