Would your year 7 dd wear these school shoes?

Dd and I are having second thoughts. They fit perfectly & are acceptable to the school but the hearts look little girly.

Dd is a size 1 G and is almost 12.

To be honest, I think you might be best off trying to change them for a plain version. DD is very 'uncool' & really not fussed about her shoes but I still don't think she'd be happy with the heart/button.

Madsometimes · 11/08/2013 20:31

Dd wore a plain version of these in Y7 and 8. She wouldn't have liked the hearts, but is not fashion conscious at all. She loved these, because the leather is soft and they are super comfortable. Sadly her feet are now too big.

Bunbaker · 11/08/2013 20:39

She might be able to get away with them if she wears trousers, but with a skirt I think she will get teased. When D was in year 7 all the girls wore ballet flats or brogues. DD can't wear ballet shoes as she wears supportive insoles so she has to wear brogues. I am so grateful that they are in vogue right now.

Picturesinthefirelight · 11/08/2013 20:48

They have to wear skirts.

My DD(15yo) tried ballet style ones for a term a couple of years ago after I finally gave in. She soon realised what a mistake it was and now has these: www.clarks.co.uk/p/20341193 - which are ballet style but with straps. Most of her friends also gave up on the slip on styles.
Her bag a large black tote back with a long strap as well as handles from Next. It has 2 large zip compartments and another central one. Big enough to hold folders.

hellymelly · 11/08/2013 21:02

Her feet are small for her age, so that is your problem along with the width issue. My DD has similar sized feet (1.5 G) but she is 8. I buy Startrite but the sizing is annoying. They are doing less and less width fittings, the quality has gone downhill too. How about Petasil? My dd has cream brogues that also come in black, they are soft, and wide fitting. I have a pair myself so they aren't too "young"! Have a look online. ( Mine came from a small independant shoe shop in Brecon, but lots online). Camper shoes often come up wide too, are not a lot more than Startrite and are stylish.

Picturesinthefirelight · 11/08/2013 21:26

I've uploaded a photo to my profile if yhecdheetvrhe school sent us. The styles with a cross through them are not allowed.

Fran and dandy black leather were the popular ones at my DD school - I was surprised because even I found them ugly but they all wore them - to their credit!

OldBeanbagz · 12/08/2013 18:13

No, my DD assures me that no one will have straps on their shoes in Y7. It's either slip-ons or lace ups.

ThePortlyPinUp · 12/08/2013 18:20

DD1 starts year 7 and we've already said that she is exempt from the annual startrite factory shop trip and can have a pair of kickers, she is very chuffed Grin

pointythings · 12/08/2013 18:47

DD1 had brogues last year - she would not have worn shoes like the OP's DD even with the hearts. There were quite a few girls in Yr7 who did, though.

This year DD has these but she is an adult 6.5 (also very tall, nearly 5'6'' so a completely different situation). She would not be allowed ballet flats - the school would allow them, I would not.

Shock at a school that will not allow girls to wear trousers, to be honest - would never, ever send my children to a place like that, so completely out of order in the modern world.

Xihha · 12/08/2013 19:12

startrite do some that are a plain and a bit more grown up if you can get the shop to swap them www.startriteshoes.com/samba-atlantic-leather-22820

Picturesinthefirelight · 12/08/2013 20:46

Someone with a child at the school says they do regular shoe checks. She reckons they won't look too out of place though the plainer ones may be better if the shop will exchange them

Don't think not being able to wear trousers will bother any if the girls. They do have track suits to wear over their leotards when moving between dance classes too.

I do know a couple if the boys were debased they had to get their hair cut (no fringes or long hair for boys allowed!)

OP posts:
Picturesinthefirelight · 12/08/2013 21:28

My phone predictive text is strange - that's devastated not debased

pointythings · 12/08/2013 22:32

Is it a specialist dance school then, OP? Most of the girls in DD1's normal state school would not be seen dead in skirts. And if the school were to bring in a skirts only rule (which they won't, they're sensible) I would be in the courts fighting for gender equality - I mean, this is the 21st century, isn't it?

Predictive text is always strange. That is its purpose. There are probably aliens studying our reactions to predictive text out there somewhere Grin

HmmAnOxfordComma · 12/08/2013 22:35

I work in a state school and I would say 90% of the girls choose to wear a skirt over trousers - aren't they more cool than the sorts of trousers allowed in schools (and not because they get away with wearing them really short, they don't!)?

HmmAnOxfordComma · 12/08/2013 22:37

Oh, in the interests of gender equality - our uniform policy changes this Sept to outlaw open-necked blouses in the summer term for girls (all must wear ties all year through) and boys are now allowed one set of pierced ears, to be equal with the girls. They have not said anything about boys being allowed skirts, yet, though...

Picturesinthefirelight · 12/08/2013 22:42

Yes it is a specialist dance school. However the school she would have gone to otherwise was also skirt suit only. Well I guess the girls could wear the boys trouser suit if they insisted but I doubt they would want to (specific suit only available from school)

teacherandguideleader · 13/08/2013 00:29

Not a single child in my year 7 form last year would have worn those! Kickers are the way to go - even if they have a flower on they are somehow cool. Failing that brogues or something similar to what you have chosen but plain fronted seem popular. Check out the bootleg range in Clarks - I know they don't go down to a 1G but pretty much anything in that range will be seen as 'acceptable', especially the t bar style so might give you an idea of what to look for.

Something like these would be a good design www.clarks.co.uk/p/20350530
www.clarks.co.uk/p/20352733
www.clarks.co.uk/p/20350526

Most of the girls in my class who didn't have kickers had something styled like the 3 above.

Elsiequadrille · 13/08/2013 00:36

No.

Picturesinthefirelight · 13/08/2013 00:37

No Clarks shoes fit dds feet

OP posts:
teacherandguideleader · 13/08/2013 07:23

I know many people do not like Clarks shoes, and most of the girls in my class don't wear them - they are just the 3 styles that seem most popular (in a range of brands).

LIZS · 13/08/2013 07:29

No way ! dd has had www.startriteshoes.com/girls-shoes/school-shoes/nova-black-leather for past year (just about to go into Year8, almost 12) although the sole at the toe has n't lasted as well the chunkier ones as she will dance about in them ! She has tiny narrow feet but they are quite supportive still.

Clary · 13/08/2013 10:16

DD says no, never.

She is size 5 anyway tho not particularly tall! Her friend who wears 2-2.5 wears similar style (ie velcro and strap) but would not have the "stupid heart".

DD last year (she is in yr 8 now) wore Clarks brogue style; other girls wore those or similar or ballet flats.
