How long is the school day?

Roisin · 19/03/2013 20:29

I am prompted by hearing about this school "The Academy day starts at 08.00, all students are expected to arrive by 07.50 and finish at 16.30" They also have a homework support club from 16.30-17.30

Please also include whether your school is an Academy, grammar, state, free, independent, etc.

8.40am - 3.05 pm The school I work at (Academy)
8.40am - 3.30 pm The school my children attend (state secondary)
8.00am - 4.30 pm Kings Science Academy, Bradford (Free School)

8:30 - 5:00 - ( which means 8:20 - 5:15 for teachers+ after school meetings which usually means 6:00 pm finish - we changed this year . It has proved very unpopular with staff and pupils alike . Previously we have 8:50 -4:00and after school clubs ( that was 8:40 - 4: 00 for teachers and staff meetings were in school time not afterwards) but some stupid teachers complained about problems with kids not doing clubs but sitting around waiting for parents/ busses and hiding in corners and out of the way places avoiding the clubs and prep and they couldnt control the larger numbers who came toprep - we had one teacher each evening covering it) and so we now have activities in the middle of the morning ( rubbish - they still flop around and hide like secret agents to get out of it) and we all have to work until 5:00.

Bloody stupidity and it doesnt work anyway. All it does is allow mummy day care for about 5 parents. I am not a baby sitter.

Then the usual after school clubs for those who want to take part, and library open till 5pm for homework.

Independent prep school where I work, currently 8.30 to 5.30, from sept 8.25 until 4.30 with optional to 5.30 ( basically whereas prep had to be done at school, they can now choose whether to stay and do it at school or do it at home)

The school my son will be going to in September starts at 8.30 and finishes at 2.35 so that extra-curricular activities can take place and still allow for students getting back home at reasonable times to do homework.

I am fortunate in that I live at the back of the school and he won't have to rely on public transport or having to carry everything on a bike.

7:45-14:30 when I went to school, with 40 min. lunch, no other breaks except 5 min. to change class (7 lessons/day). 180 days/yr.

8:20-3 for DS now, with 65 mins of breaks (5 lessons/day)
8:20-4pm for the posh girl's school DD likes, with 1 hour of breaks, I think.

The school mentioned in theOP has just received a terrible ofsted. One of the criticisms was that students struggled with the length of the day and suffered from very poor concentration levels. In response the HT issued a statement saying that he was doing the parents, kids and community a favour by keeping the kids off the streets! A comment the parents found v v insulting. This school is an example of a very failing free school. It has millions put into it but is not working. Another criticism was this it is supposedly a specialist science academy but has no facilities for the study of practical science. You couldn't make this up.

The HT was touted as an 'Oxford' super head. But it's now been revealed he studied some kind of science degree, obtained a very low grade, moved to law, failed to pass his legal practice degree to practice law, went on to pgce and taught in a failing secondary, gave that up and reappeared on the scene a few years later as head of this free school. Very bizarre all round.
