Last day of school before gcses!

legallady · 02/05/2012 09:05

Just received letter from DD's school confirming that Friday 11 May is the last day of timetabled lessons before gcses begin. If she wasn't hoping to stay on for the 6th form (depending on whether she gets good enough grades) that could feasibly be her last "proper" day at the school.

I can't believe 5 years has gone so quickly Sad. She's already had her leavers' sweatshirt and Yearbook and suddenly gcses are upon us.

Anyone else wondering where the time has gone?

Here they don't officially leave until half term but, with all the exams coming up from mid-May to half term, I can't see the timetable being kept the same for very much longer. She still seems a lot of work to do in those weeks ahead.

All our children leave as there is no sixth form. My daughter got offered a place at a local sixth form college last night (added now to the offer she already holds from a dedicated Art School), so she has a choice of where to go. They are both conditional but relatively low conditions (the biggest hurdle for her was her portfolio and actually getting offers).

She has had her record of achievement but nothing else yet. They have a late prom - in July, so as not to divert attention for the exams! Well, thats the hope!

It has, indeed, gone very, very fast. And aren't they all so grown up now?

AThingInYourLife · 02/05/2012 10:19

Congratulations both :)

My first is starting primary school in September - it's hard to believe she'll ever be big enough to do GCSEs.

startail · 02/05/2012 10:49

DD2 leaves primary in July.

So many things are being done for the last time. Feels really odd that come Sept. I won't have to do the school run, read a heap of texts from school and Emails from the PTA.

And I hopefully won't be racing about, like today, because said texts are stupidly last minute.

The high school do text, but they have lovely efficient admin. staff so not or HTs panics.

GnomeDePlume · 02/05/2012 13:17

In the same boat here as well as DD1 will be moving to a different 6th all being well. Scary thought is that DD1 will start driving lessons in September.

BeingFluffy · 02/05/2012 16:31

Oooh, I know just what you mean. DD1's last day of compulsory schooling is this Friday. I can remember thinking it was ages until she started primary - the last couple of years have flown by! Looking forward to the yearbook and the prom - they don't get the sweatshirt until Sixth Form!

BringBack1996 · 02/05/2012 23:04

DD finishes primary this year and DS finishes for GCSEs on the 10th May - I cannot believe where the time has gone!

IdontknowwhyIcare · 03/05/2012 06:23

Ds has prom tomorrow and last day next Thursday (fri/sat weekend). No idea about sweatshirts and yearbooks?
School is keeping the timetable though and students go in if they want to the lessons, the teachers will be there offering revision help. Obviously as the exams finish they dont attend any longer.
They do have book day 24th June, all books to be returned and they get all the stuff about sixth form.
And yes time has gone by in a flash Grin Sad Grin

empirestateofmind · 03/05/2012 15:41

DD goes on leave of absence next Tuesday. They have got their leavers sweatshirts with their nicknames on the back. No sign of the Year book yet, but the pages only had to go in last week. The Prom is at the end of the exams. Dress code = long dresses and black tie!

Y13 have a similarly swanky bash at an even grander hotel. I am saving up!

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 03/05/2012 15:48

Yep, same here - 2 days' school next week then final assembly/presentation, sweatshirts followed by theme park trip next day. Thankfully prom not till after exams. I am still Shock at the price of prom dresses quoted on a thread earlier this week

I am possibly more worried about her exams than she is!

DiscoDaisy · 03/05/2012 15:54

My eldest finishes timetabled lessons on 1st June. Her last GCSE is on 22nd June and her prom is on 4th July. She's hopefully going to college in Sept but I can't believe she is finishing compulsory education!

BeingFluffy · 03/05/2012 17:56

DD1 also got the letter with her NI number yesterday - can't believe she is nearly grown up! Shock

seeker · 03/05/2012 18:06

Mine too- finishes school on Friday 11th- but that is a trip to Thorpe Park.

I want to cry!

seeker · 03/05/2012 18:07

And ds leaves primary this summer too! I want to cry more!

MiladyGardenia · 03/05/2012 18:11

Ds1 finishes on the 11th too.

So in September (providing he's done enough revision and got his GCSEs) he'll be starting 6th form.

And ds2 will be starting at 'Big School' (reception).

There will be sobbing, I fear.

Get0rfMoiLand · 03/05/2012 18:22

I can't even think about this as it makes me want to cry too.

Dd finishes school on 23rd May and her prom is in July as well (good idea).

Thinking of her leaving in just over 2 years to go to uni or whatever makes me have a nervous breakdown.

I want to go right back to when she was a baby and do it all again (but better this time)

Oh, god, getoff- you and me both. Il look at her and think that I used to think she was so grown up and get cross with her for being a perfectly normal 6 year old,

I wish I could do it again.

Kez100 · 03/05/2012 18:42

Yeh, that.

MaureenMLove · 03/05/2012 18:47

Oh me! I'm steadily getting more and more mauldin as the time gets nearer!

I have another problem, in that as well as my only child reaching the end of compulsory education, I have worked at a secondary school for 5 years. This means that I have another 240 Yr11 students that I have grown rather fond of! I'm a bloody mess just thinking about them all going! Grin

DD finishes offically on last day of this term, but I doubt she'll have many lessons left to do by then. Looking at her timetable, she's only got Science and Geography GCSE's to do after the break.

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 03/05/2012 18:55

Oh I desperately want to join the back-to-baby-again club too!

I've been lying awake at night feeling so tearful that in 2 years she will have left home. Also realised we won't have many family holidays left Sad

MaureenMLove · 03/05/2012 19:01

Really? I'm actually only a mess because I'm excited for her future and all the fantastic adventures she will have. I DO NOT want to do it all again!

Anyway, she's got a place at 6th form at my school, so I'll see her even more! Grin

BringBack1996 · 03/05/2012 19:39

I've got DC3 due in June so around the time my older two are moving on there will be a new addition! Hopefully I'll do it all better this time :)

Get0rfMoiLand · 03/05/2012 21:04

I am getting maudlin as well.

Seeker - something you said on a thread months ago made me think. I started a thread saying how much I loathed making sandwiches for dd's lunch every morning and what a chore it was. You said you liked doing it as you knew that your DC would have a nice lunch which you made for them. I still bloody grumble at making her sandwiches but feel the same now - you're right, it is a nice thing to do. And she loves it when I sneak a surprise treat in.

I still sometimes think 'sod it' and give her a couple of quid to buy a panini though Grin

MaureenMLove · 03/05/2012 22:40

I expect DD will seek me out for a couple of quid for lunch at school! I might even be able to have lunch with her sometimes. It's all good for me, if I think about it! Grin

glaurung · 03/05/2012 23:04

Another here who can't believe the end is in sight. Dd finishes at half term when most of her exams will be over. Then pastures new for sixth form and making new friends/settling in etc. all over again but she's getting very good at this through lots of practice, so hopefully it will be a smooth transition.

Are all your lot decided on what they want to do at sixth form (or elsewhere) subject wise?
