I think I need an impartial opinion as we are going round in circles and DD and I are getting more stressed by the moment!

DD's current career choices are psychologist/psychiatrist or designer of some sort (interior is the current choice).

She has 3 option choices

She has to do music (she has a music scholarship)
She wants to do a language (has chosen French as she is relatively fluent already - is a language a good choice?)

Which leaves one;

Art or
Psychology

I haven't done university myself so have no idea whether GCSE's subjects are taken into account (or just the grades).

Come on mumsnetters help please!!!

Agree with TheSecondcoming.
Geography a better option than Artt, together with music. Goes well with the sciences too.

Art is a subject that can be easily picked up later on if that's where the interest lies.

DD flits between music and science career choices (in music mode currently). She will be choosing Music, French and Geography along with triple science.

Ok. What about this lot. Advice please as we are going round and round with it atm.

maths
english
sciences (hopefully 3 seperate ones but we won't know as yet)
history
geography
german or music (DS doesn't really want to do german and his levels aren't that good, music much better)
art or resistant materials.

For engineering. He has decided against engineering at GCSE as it narrowed things down too much.

Would he get a C in German? And could he work at it to pull his grades up? I'm of the view that for engineering, and for life in general, German is more practical than music.

Equally for engineering RM over art IMO.

I don't know. He probably would but his interest is zilch atm! he does understand the issue but he has given up engineering which would take up 2 GCSEs in favour of 2 more trad subjects (geog and history) so i feel he should be allowed some leeway. Ooohh I don't know.

Going to school on Thursday to talk about it all.

As a teacher:

Pysch is useless at GCSE and will not be needed to do the A Level.
Art is generally considered 'soft' by universities.

A language is a must, especially if she is likely to do well.

Either history or geography seems like the most sensible choice from those options, and are well regarded by unis. History if she is going for a more 'arts' based subject that involves lots of essay writing. Geography if she is going for a more 'science' based subject.
