Hi all
I am new to this. I am loving this site.
Has anyone's DS taken an 11+ exam at Whitgift or Trinity this year. We have taken both and have an interview at Whitgift.
Any tips for a first timer.

OP posts:

OMG I think that would be sooooo much worse Shock I am grateful that we had exam then interview Grin keep trying to convince myself that we done enough Blush but it ain't over till the fat lady sings, or the letter is in our hands!!!!

Seeline · 30/01/2012 15:32

OK - shouldn't listen to school gate gossip but.... A friend of a friend of a friend works for OP and has reliably informed her that T is to go co-ed, merging with OP. It's rubbish isn't it??

frankies69 · 30/01/2012 15:34

I too had heard T was to go co-ed!!! The HM on our visit said as much but not in those words...he said they were trialling it in 6th form to see how it went. Yes I think the answer must be they are probably eventually going to go co-ed!!!!

Seeline · 30/01/2012 15:37

Any indication of time scale frankie? Probably jumping the gun as no offers yet but really wanted single sex school for DS.

SoupDragon · 30/01/2012 15:42

I can't imagine them merging with OP.

Seeline · 30/01/2012 15:45

I thought that was particularly odd too Soup. As an 'insider' at T is the co-ed element common knowledge/expected after the 6th form change?

SoupDragon · 30/01/2012 15:47

No - but then again the HM laughed it off during DS1s interview when I joked about me needing to persuade them to go co-ed.

I can ask a teacher next time I see them.

frankies69 · 30/01/2012 15:48

There was no talk of the OP and T merge, however, they did say that it would eventually go co-ed. No date was mentioned!! Maybe once you get your offer, ask the question for the future. My DH and I discussed it and couldn't see it happening in the next couple of years, no help I know...but as it now doesn't affect me I kind of didn't give it any more thought. sorry Sad

SoupDragon · 30/01/2012 15:52

I'm thought I recently saw something from HM saying that he thought single sex education was important for the boys though. I can't find it now so I could have been imagining it.

frankies69 · 30/01/2012 15:58

You know how these rumours start.....Hmm

frankies69 · 30/01/2012 16:15

I am now trying to think back to the open day we went on ......... I can definitely remember the HM talking about the 6th form becomming co-ed.... AND I must say in the back of the grey matter Confused, I am sure there was talk of eventual acceptance of GIRLS!!!! Hmm.

There was definitely no time scale mentioned....my DS did say at the time he wanted to go to single sex school!!! I understand seeline the concern, maybe soup should use her influence to put all out of their misery Grin

kravings · 30/01/2012 16:19

I clearly heard it at the T open day HM speech - he said that 6th form is co-ed and this has been done recently...but did not hear say anything about implementing it to other years.

frankies69 · 30/01/2012 16:21

kravings....maybe my memory is fuzzled with all that has been going on Confused You may be completely right!!! I have just messaged a RL friend who was at open day with me and asked her!!! She may agree with you, hopefully for seeline anyway Grin

Ladymuck · 30/01/2012 16:27

A merger with OP has never been on the cards, and there is a healthy demand for single sex girls education. Whilst it is true that many of the schools which have gone co-ed for 6th form eventually go fully co-ed, it is not usually a fast process, and seems to take over 10 years from the initial change.

kravings · 30/01/2012 16:33

Don't worry frankies - we will take our DSs to W which does not have any intension of going co-ed...even in the near future Wink

frankies69 · 30/01/2012 16:34

Oh kravings the voice of reason!!!! Grin

Seeline · 30/01/2012 18:54

Thank you all for your calming influence Grin I think I was just taken by surprise. Obviously a school could not go co-ed over night - there must be a huge array of alterations which would need to be undertaken. I panicked Blush
If such a such were to take place it would be unlikely to have a major impact on any of our DSs.
I certainly don't remember the HM talking about it at hteopen day beyond saying that the introduction of girls in the 6th form had had some unexpected impact on the boys (washing etc!!) We also chatted to the HM at DSs interview about the 6th form and he made no mention of extending the co-ed policy.
Right where's my much needed Wine?

stresscity · 30/01/2012 19:02

Evening all-busy booking holiday to take my mind off all this stress Smile Turkey in August here we come !!!
Anyway, Co-Ed-oh please no. Definitely one of the reasons we opted for T. However, if it was the case then possibly wouldnt mind quite so much if its in a few years once DS has learnt to keep mind on what matters! He certainly doesn't need any distractions!
@Ladymuck-oh wise one, whats this with the recalls x 4? Have you heard if thats for sports too. I was under the impression today was 2nd/final day?

frankies69 · 30/01/2012 19:27

I know everything has finished now at W and the deeds are done in terms of no more can be done...but when does everything finish at T to wait for the letters?? Anyone know????

stresscity · 30/01/2012 19:29

@frankies, as far as I read/was aware, today was last day and that was for sports scholarship.

frankies69 · 30/01/2012 19:43

oh ok so we all waiting now...the sleep countdown will def start soon then Grin

kjartanette · 30/01/2012 19:56

hi again
it's not quite finished at T yet, as I understand it. Two of DS's friends, brainy boys, both have interviews there tomorrow. They've had definite scholarship interviews elsewhere and one of them I think is a potential scholar at W (judging by the no of maths questions and big grilling by two teachers he got there - we just had nice chat with Mr Beck). At any rate, that's the last T activity I've heard of.
I now need 20 days to go by very fast indeed ... best of luck to everyone!

stresscity · 30/01/2012 19:59

okey dokey Smile

frankies69 · 30/01/2012 20:07
Grin
Asterisk · 30/01/2012 20:13

Yup... we're up tomorrow at T for interview. Been doing some role play. It's not looking promising.

Me: 'So have you been abroad?' DS: 'Yes. We used to have money for holidays but now my parents are going to be spending on sending me to private school.'
Me: 'Okay, so do you enjoy playing in your school orchestra?'
DS: 'Yes, because we get given biscuits and juice.'
Me: 'Do you have any questions?'
DS: 'Have I done well enough to get a place?'
Me (aghast!): No, you can't ask that. Think of another question.
DS: 'I came here two years ago and nothing seems to have changed. What exactly do you spend the fees on?'

Groan...
