Hi all
I am new to this. I am loving this site.
Has anyone's DS taken an 11+ exam at Whitgift or Trinity this year. We have taken both and have an interview at Whitgift.
Any tips for a first timer.

wahwahwah - good luck like frankies said, everything crossed Smile.

wahwahwah · 26/01/2012 11:23

Thank you! I hope he remembers to tell them all the things he gets up to, prizes he's won... he is quite nonchelant about all that, so I will be willing him to do well.

I am going to be on my knees all afternoon. Get your minds out of the gutter! I meant praying...

SoupDragon · 26/01/2012 13:08

Well, being on your knees is certainly one way to bribe your way in although I think I'll stick to hijacking a peacock

Good luck :)

Asterisk, most of the boys sitting and passing one of the schools will have sat and passed both. Soupy for example has already turned down Whitgift once, and will probably be forced to do so again. Also many families are really hoping for a grammar place and have applied for places at W & T as a back-up. And I think that I mentioned earlier that I know that some of the existing Junior form boys at T are also sitting grammar school exams. Also W&T are sat as back-ups for boys going for Dulwich, KCS as well as some of the co-eds to the south eg Reigate Grammar, Caterham etc. I have to say that I really don't know the exact number of offers that W & T will initially make, but I would expect them to offer at least double the number of spaces that they have at 11+. Fewer offers at 10+ and 12+.

SoupDragon · 26/01/2012 13:29

Yes, DS2 potentially has 4 school places - 1 grammar, one state comp (already offered on academic ability) and T & W. Obviously he can only attend one of them :)

Ladymuck · 26/01/2012 13:33

Just dealing with one school uniform for the ds's must be tempting!

FarmerBarleymow · 26/01/2012 13:38

Just to throw this into the mix...one 10+ mum announced at school that her DS offered full scholarships at W and T last week and must decide by next Monday which one to accept....

SWStressed · 26/01/2012 13:45

mmm bet she is super popular mum at school gates. What is wrong with these people? Maybe she is Mr Benn and it is all a dream....

SoupDragon · 26/01/2012 13:46

So long as I don't get the uniforms mixed up it'll be fine. DS1 has a twin in his class - the other (identical) twin is at W! Apparently they switched ties one day - it did not go down well.

SoupDragon · 26/01/2012 13:48

10+ dates may be different - they may not have to adhere to the pan-london thingamywotsit.

Or she may be talking nonsense.

Ladymuck · 26/01/2012 14:07

Both W & T are members of the HMC and therefore their maximum scholarship is 50%. It is possible to get full fee remission by combining a scholarship and a bursary and there are boys in both schools with full fee remission, but not with full scholarships.

Equally both W and T are members of the Trinity Group agreement on school admissions (ie the Pan London agreement which means that parents have time to hear their state school outcome before signing the cheque). In practice the schools follow the agreement for 10+ and 13+ too.

So the child must be truly exceptional for both W & T to give up membership of both groups in order to grab him. No wonder she's pleased.

FarmerBarleymow · 26/01/2012 14:15

Apparently top score in Maths and in top 4 for English and VR at W. If to be taken at ace value, a very happy family!

SoupDragon · 26/01/2012 14:16

Can you not get 50% academic plus 50% sport/music/flower arranging scholarships then?

stresscity · 26/01/2012 14:28

Afternoon all!!! Gosh its taken me an hour to catch up with you all this morning. @SWS I loved Mr Benn Smile
I think Soup answered most of your questions however if you do request to meet HM it is very much your forum for you to ask any unanswered questions.
@Soup-muct have missed the Flower arranging Scholarship, I think my DS would have been in with a better shot Wink I do have some fab news our way though, we received a recall letter for sports scholarship this morning-whooppee Smile DS will be very chuffed when I tell him later. Just wanted to share that with you mums especially during a rather tense time in our home!

Ladymuck · 26/01/2012 14:30

You can get multiple scholarships but they're capped at 50%. Though if music is included then I think that you do get the 50% plus the "free" instrumental lessons (which as most of the music scholars will have their own external music tutors equates to £150-odd a term towards those costs).

That said I wouldn't want to suggest that anyone is lying. The schools may have changed the rules very recently. But it did take the schools years to agree on these conditions, and they are network wide agreements, not the decision of individual headmasters.

SWStressed · 26/01/2012 14:43

Stresscity, tell me more about sports recall letter please! At work (yes working v hard obviously) so no post but not holding out much hope for mine, especially since he had us in total fits regaling us with stories of the hockey and various gumshield mishaps which he says made him look a total prat. Is there another assessment or interview or what? Then do they give you some idea of what he will get?

stresscity · 26/01/2012 14:52

@SWS Letter dated yesterday which are sent only to those who have passed the initial tests this/last week. Letter states final process to be held this Monday 30th. HM said not to be alarmed if your DS is not recalled for sports as this in no way implies that they havent got an offer. No idea of what he could receive but he'll have to pass this next stage before we know that and my DS did say that some of the boys really were outstanding. As I said to my DH, if he gets no further, Im really proud of him to get this far Smile.

frankies69 · 26/01/2012 16:21

@stresscity .... I am now even more Confused.....is that a T recall or W????? Well done to your DS thrilled for him Grin

SWStressed · 26/01/2012 16:41

Stress, now confused (easily done). Dis HM tell you that in interview? Do you mean that fact don't get sports scholarship won't mean they don't get an offer at all? Assume all who are up for sports scholarship must get called back for monday. No letter on our mat today so assume not good news, not that was really expecting but still....do think they should send out rejection letetrs same time as its the waitiing/not knowing that makes it so unpleasant. Good luck to your son, sharpen those elbows!

SoupDragon · 26/01/2012 16:49

Don't forget they can't choose how quickly the postal system delivers a letter.

Even if your DS doesn't get a sports scholarship it won't mean he won't get an offer at all.

havinganightmare · 26/01/2012 16:53

Stresscity great news! Well done to yr DS. I think as well as Monday there are various specialised sports assessments today and Monday after school in cricket and hockey which were not done in depth at the initial assessments. DS there now with DH. About 40 boys across 10 and 11 plus age groups. We've not had a letter re Monday tho... This stress is making me ill!!!!

kravings · 26/01/2012 17:45

stresscity - excellent news, every piece of good news takes us one step furthur to - "YES, WE ACCEPT HIM/OFFER HIM A PLACE" dream.

stresscity · 26/01/2012 17:47

Gosh am I making matters worse for you all? Stress levels are bad enough without me putting my ore in!! @ Frankie, yes only applied for Trinity @SWS Yes DH told me in interview, quote, 'dont be concerned if your DS does not make recalls, it does not mean he wont get an offer. @ Havinganightmare, I wasnt aware of any other sports assessments today-good luck to your DS!! HM did say that is was over 2 days as so many applicants. My DS has to go for, quote, 'final assessment' Monday 8.30 til 12.15 to be assessed on the sports chosen for their 1st assessment (in his case Football and Rugby).
Hope that help answers any questions.

stresscity · 26/01/2012 17:49

Kravings-Thanks It does get you all worked up again just as i was calming down after interview Grin

havinganightmare · 26/01/2012 17:51

Sorry I was talking W so that's me confusing everything and making it worse.... I'm blaming the sleepless nights!!!
