I’m considering a move to Dundee area around nine wells. Is it worth considering? Where could you live without a long commute and near schools for state primary then secondary? Thanks.?

Hi, I’m in Dundee. For living around Ninewells you’ll need to be a bit more specific, some of it lovely some of it less so. There are primary schools all over with feeder high schools all accessible by bus if they are to far too walk.

Nogg · 08/07/2025 17:44

Somewhere nice up to about 950k? . Can commute in but need to also do childcare so not too long a drive up to about half an hour and nothing hard or difficult in bad weather. I’m interested in nice places which are maintained no rough and ready areas

If you have 950k to spend, you’ll be wanting to move to Broughty Ferry.

Nogg · 08/07/2025 17:48

Are there good schools in broughty ferry?

Have you looked on TSPC the local property guide? It is where most estate agents advertise. Broughty Ferry might be an idea. Or one of the little towns just outside, the only time we struggle is with really bad snow which once every 5 years or so.

RoseDog · 08/07/2025 17:52

The schools are all much the same with a mix of pupils with different backgrounds

Nogg · 08/07/2025 17:57

I’m looking now it seems cheaper than where I live! Where are the areas to avoid? What about outside places?

With your budget I’d look at birkhill/auchterhouse/Liff area (in countryside nearest ninewells) which feeds into Monifieth High school (kids get bused but I’d check specific boundary on Angus and Dundee council websites).
or there is Broughty ferry/ Monifieth on the other side of Dundee.

I thought Harris was the catchment school for that area.

ThatAgileCoralBird · 08/07/2025 20:41

I think it’s a bit of a mix depending on exactly where your property is.

Best to check for specific property, which you can do online (Monifieth high which is in Angus council has a map).

often there is cross over in this area on the periphery of Dundee and you have a choice of certain Angus secondary schools. you can do this anyway but would need to put in a request when in P7.

I know children who lived in birkhill/auchterhouse and liff and were in Monifieth high catchment and who had bus transport to school. I also know someone who lived in Liff and was successful in a placing request to Harris Academy.

you'd need to check as my info may be out of date but Angus secondary catchment depends on geographical location of where you live (I know someone whose farm was auchterhouse and the location of their front door was taken as their point of their geographical location; they appealed and took it further and won their child a placement at Monifieth high)
Dundee secondary depended on which primary school you attended (used to but best check
if this is important to you).

Secondary school catchment areas map

Click or tap an area of the map. A box will appear telling you which school's catchment the area is in.If the box says 'nothing found' you have clicked on an area outside Angus. Some locations will be in the catchment area of more than one school.Displ...

If you go for Liff, make sure you're in the actual village. If you're in the Western gateway, even one of the new houses in the old hospital, it's Dundee and the catchment school is 5 miles away. Not the wee school over the lane that you can see from your house!
Invergowrie is very doable and there's currently an agreement that their pupils can go to Harris. Otherwise you're looking at the West end and the estates around ninewells.

Chesticles · 08/07/2025 22:18

I would suggest fife. Possibly Newport Wormit or St Andrews. Madras is a very good high school.

Nogg · 08/07/2025 22:48

I have to do school pick up etc as well as working so can be too far to drive.

Namedundeeswap · 08/07/2025 22:55

I'm going to assume you're working at Ninewells or in one of the places on the tech park. So easy schools to get to from Ninewells are Invergowrie, Liff, Birkhill and a whole load of Dundee ones - e.g. Vic Park, Blackness, Tayview, Ancrum, St Joseph's, St Ninians. Also Camperdown and St Clements. They're all within 10-20 mins drive of the hospital/tech park.

Namedundeeswap · 08/07/2025 22:58

PS parking on the Ninewells site is a nightmare since they removed parking fees. That could add a good chunk of time to your morning commute. A couple of people I know leave their car at the child's school and bike or walk onto the hospital site.

Thanks how does Dundee compare to Edinburgh weather and general state of repair. Is it run down?

OP posts:
RoseDog · 09/07/2025 11:57

The weather is not much different, it’s only an hour away! It’s much much smaller than Edinburgh, you can get from end of Dundee to the other in 10 - 15 minutes in good traffic. There are run down areas but you’ll get that anywhere.

boobashka · 09/07/2025 12:01

How about Perth @Nogg ?
An easy half hour drive from Ninewells. I know lots of medics who live in Perth and commute there. Or there are some nice villages along the Carse of Gowrie (Perthshire) which are not far from the hospital.

Nogg · 09/07/2025 12:10

I wondered about Perth but my worry is school pick up and drop off and work timing. I guess would need childminder etc but there are school holidays too. Everything so complicated.

OP posts:
stargirl1701 · 09/07/2025 12:11

I would second Perth, OP.

Have you ever been to either Dundee or Edinburgh before OP? I suspect not.

There’s the Dundee waterfront which is nice, but 100m back from the water is the rest of Dundee which is not. You are a Perth person or a St Andrews person. Get a good breakfast club / afterschool club / childminder.

Yes I have but I don’t know Dundee and Perthshire etc well

Don't do it. Wretched place mostly.

dayatthepark · 09/07/2025 16:56

Personally I love Broughty Ferry. However DB lives near Auchterhouse and there are also lots of nice houses there, and a good community spirit. I think there is a primary in Auchterhouse, but there is a bigger one in Birkhill, which seems lovely and has afterschool club. It's a few minutes drive from there to Ninewells.
