Glasgow holiday let

Issy422 · 30/05/2025 14:40

Huge long shot. DD needs to be in Glasgow for 7/8 nights at the end of July. Worst timing as likely to be the first week of English school hols.

Any hidden gems for somewhere to stay?

Ideally self-catering as eating out is going to get a bit pricey for 8 nights. Thought I'd found an Aparthotel but prices have shot up since I first looked a week ago.

Doesn't have to be city centre, anywhere on the clockwork orange would work.

Failing that, any recommendations for cheap eating out?

The English school holidays aren't the same as those in Glasgow

Yes, I live in Scotland, but we are staying in Glasgow for the first week of the English school holidays which is generally the most expensive across the UK.

Oh I see! I didn't think the prices in Scotland would be as much affected by that. Sorry don't have a hotel in mind. Do the unis rent out their accommodation in the holidays?

SnoozingFox · 30/05/2025 16:15

I wouldn't just look at the underground. Look along the commuter lines which go into central/queen street - bishopbriggs, lenzie, helensburgh, dumbarton even?

OatFlatWhiteForMe · 30/05/2025 16:17

Where does she have to be in the city roughly (west end, city centre etc) because something on a computer rail line might be the best value.

UncharteredWaters · 30/05/2025 16:19

What size of place does she need? We occasionally rent my flat in the west end. Not if it’s a group though / not big enough and we like the neighbours!

SnoozingFox · 30/05/2025 16:20

great minds, @OatFlatWhiteForMe !!

OatFlatWhiteForMe · 30/05/2025 16:26

Yes @SnoozingFox. Waving from the end of a Glasgow commuter line here! 👋🏻

Thanks for all the replies.

She needs to get to St. George's subway. She's a child, so I'll be staying with her. Ideally two beds rather than a double. We need to arrive on either Sun 20th/Mon 21st (waiting for confirmation of Monday start time) and will leave on Mon 28th, but can start or end in a hotel if needed. Will include very late nights.

Premier Inn a lot cheaper than anything self-catering that I've found up to now (but not once I've paid for all the eating out).

Halls of residence is a possibility if I can't get anything, they have that arranged for the visiting adults, but we'd have to have completely separate rooms and it costs almost the same as the cheapest Premier Inn.

Have you looked at the Airbnb situation?

BoarBrush · 30/05/2025 20:56

Airbnb is so ridiculously priced once you factor in all the fees. I'd suggest try searching for guest houses along great western, Maryhill road, woodside, even western end of sauchiehall.

Also check the hilton, they can sometimes be surprisingly cheap. Not for food right enough.

Premier inn St Enoch is £240 cheaper than the airbnb I suggested after the weekly discount.
Citizen M is often similarly priced to the Premier Inns.
It’s definitely worth weighing up how much more you would really be to eat out of you did a mix of quick breakfasts in the room and take away a good few nights. Assume your DD will be eating at the place she’s going during the day?

Issy422 · 31/05/2025 06:16

Thanks for the searching@OatFlatWhiteForMe . I had a quick look on Airbnb (and VRBO & booking.com) before posting but it was all quite expensive. The PI SE is the cheapest I found. Last week the Aparthotel was only about £40 more, so I was weighing up which to do, but PI has come down and the Accor group all gone up. Self-catered would be easier for packed lunches and quick meals though. Feel like I'm playing russian roulette holding out to see if the Accor comes back down before the PI goes up.

Checked the Hilton @BoarBrush and even with a discount it's still double the PI most nights. I'll look out for guesthouses where you mentioned.

Unite Student accommodation has very cheap rooms (about £200 a room for your dates) BUT I would check the details as I suspect they won't provide bedding or cooking equipment. They're also double beds so you'd need 2 rooms, but at that price it would still be cheaper than hotel, just depends if you're comfortable having separate rooms like that Find your perfect home | Unite Students
There's also True Student right by St George's Cross subway Book A Room Over Summer & Get All This... | true student
£800 for 8 nights at the Adagio Aparthotel seems like a good deal to me, twin room: Aparthotel Adagio Glasgow Central, Glasgow (updated prices 2025)

Thanks @MiddleAgedDread, I'll look at those. The Aparthotel was £720, kicking myself for not booking it when I first saw it. The PI went up from £650 to £730 yesterday too.

Issy422 · 02/06/2025 15:32

I checked those out but they were for students only.

Not sure what's going on the last weekend in July, but the PI prices for that Saturday have jumped again today.

Still don't know if we need 7 or 8 nights, but I've reserved somewhere for the 7 nights. A lot more pricey than I usually pay for a Glasgow trip, but thankfully it didn't cost extra to have free cancellation, so if prices come down again, I'll rebook.

Still open to hear of other options if anyone knows of a hidden summer bargain.

What’s the current price to beat @Issy422? Citizen M is £729 for the week.

Issy422 · 02/06/2025 22:39

Love your determination @OatFlatWhiteForMe. £712 for the 7 nights. I get a discount at Citizen M too, but at the moment worth the extra as I've booked self-catered.

OatFlatWhiteForMe · 03/06/2025 16:05

Self catering definitely has a benefit if similar in price.

Timetodownsize · 03/06/2025 19:39

Have you tried Ambassador Hotel ? Think they also have s/c apartments and are just off Queen Margaret Drive so reasonable walk to Kelvin bridge.

Thanks for the suggestion. It's more expensive at the moment but one to keep an eye on.
