Neighbour AirBnB-ing with no STLL

HeartyOchreHelper · 08/05/2025 15:22

One of my neighbours has put their house on AirBnB - it’s a nice quiet new build development in a touristy area so I guess it will be in demand. The other weekend we had a popular sports event in the area so it makes sense now that there were so many cars and bikes outside that house for the weekend!

Anyway I’ve had a nosy on the Council STLL register because I’d not seen any of the STLL signs at the house and there’s no Short Term Let Licence issued or application received.

Here’s the question - would you dob them in or leave it? I hate to be a wee grass but you just never know what will happen with AirBnBs! 🥲

What do you gain from grassing them up? maybe focus on your own life?

Mareleine · 08/05/2025 15:32

Would it invalidate your home insurance if they did something e.g. got drunk and smashed your windows, or started a fire that spread to your house and it wasn't the usual occupants? If so, I'd definitely say something. We should all be reporting stuff like this because this is one reason why councils in certain areas have no bloody tax money to pay for anything! Some people on here seem to want it both ways where they want better services but also want to fiddle the system.

TheSmallAssassin · 08/05/2025 15:40

If you think it's going to affect your enjoyment of your property, then yes, report. Why wouldn't you? The licence system exists for a reason.

HeartyOchreHelper · 08/05/2025 15:46

For sure, I’m a stickler for rules anyway so it’s partly just the principle. BUT the STLLs in particular were brought in for good reason. The Highlands is full of AirBnBs now, imagine if the STLLs didn’t exist how easy it would be for commercial AirBnB-ers to buy up whole streets or blocks of flats! How miserable if you lived there.

I’ll leave it a wee week or two and see if the posters appear around the house and if not probs contact the Council.

I would report

AntiHop · 08/05/2025 15:51

I'd report. Why do they get to circumvent the rules?

MiddleAgedDread · 08/05/2025 16:02

report, there's a reason these things exist!

The licence is a new way to tax the public in the most highly-taxed economy in the western world.

OP needs to wind in her neck, cease being so petty, and mind her own business

If that’s true (and I don’t think it is) then that’s not my problem, that’s the Scottish Governments doing. Literally F all to do with me.

The licenses are also in place to regulate the insane amount of short term lets that have taken over the country. I’d say that’s quite important.

If your ultimate goal is to is to stop him doing an air b n b he’d probably just get a license so that would be pointless

if your just a stickler for rules then report

we should squeeze all the tax out of airB&Bs that we can though! Pretty much everywhere in Scotland has a housing crisis. AirB&Bs are parasites. ‘Grass’ away OP please!

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 08/05/2025 19:22

Maybe they don't know it's a requirement. I'd try to find a way to let them know anonymously before taking any other action.

cornflourblue · 08/05/2025 20:20

The licenceing is also in place to ensure houses are let safely, so fire inspection, smoke alarms, gas safety etc.

Airbnb is so badly regulated. I would report.

Freeme31 · 08/05/2025 20:37

Report as they need regulated for safety reasons. If someone was to die in the house for example fire, carbon monoxide could you live with that. Always do the right thing it’s not about being a “grass”

Oh dear.. sorry opinion police.

personally I think it’s petty and infantile to report other people just getting on with life and making a few pennies on the shite economic we live in.

unless it’s impacting on the OP then she should mind her own business.

No it's not. It's to ensure short term let's that are being let out are of a decent quality and safety, to cover the councils administration fees for that department which deals with things like concerns from neighbours, issuing licenses, monitoring the impact of STLL on the community.

yes. as usual with taxation a cash-grab under the guise of decency. then indecently squandered or pocketed.

We don't even come close to some other countries in the "western world". We come in approximately 18th.

Upholding community standards.

andtheworldrollson · 09/05/2025 14:59

Oh you have touched a nerve - seems a lot of people want to cheat the system !

SirChenjins · 09/05/2025 15:01

Yes I’d report - wouldn’t hesitate to.

heroinechic · 09/05/2025 15:08

I cannot understand the attitude of many posters on here. Why would you go out of your way to cause trouble for someone if it isn’t negatively impacting you in any way? I’d totally get it if the air bnb was causing a nuisance and after speaking with your neighbour they were unwilling to do anything to mitigate it, but you haven’t been impacted by this at all!

I imagine these are the same people that reported their neighbours for walking their dog more than once a day during lockdown.

Portakalkedi · 09/05/2025 15:14

Of course you should report, why on earth wouldn't you? People breaking the rules are, sadly, the business of all of us.

They have moved out, how am I meant to speak with them?
