Neighbour AirBnB-ing with no STLL

One of my neighbours has put their house on AirBnB - it’s a nice quiet new build development in a touristy area so I guess it will be in demand. The other weekend we had a popular sports event in the area so it makes sense now that there were so many cars and bikes outside that house for the weekend!

Anyway I’ve had a nosy on the Council STLL register because I’d not seen any of the STLL signs at the house and there’s no Short Term Let Licence issued or application received.

Here’s the question - would you dob them in or leave it? I hate to be a wee grass but you just never know what will happen with AirBnBs! 🥲

Report them.
It's illegal.
It might impact that quality of your life longer term.
They might not even get a license, as it's not a case of just applying.

I would report, there is no upside for you for not reporting. My friend works at a Scottish council and says there is no way to enforce these regulations as not enough staff, but they do look into them if there are complaints.

Newstartplease24 · 18/05/2025 13:45

Report. Rules exist for a reason. I wish there was stricter control, either by law or convention, on how people use their properties. Residential property in this country is under so much pressure and people using property intended as residences for something else impacts everyone. My NDN has torn up the front garden to park his van on it and uses it as a builders yard. It’s horrible, presumably not illegal but it makes living in the nearby houses more unpleasant and it’s not what was intended when the houses were built. Trivial example but everyone is impacted when homes become non-homes.

Newstartplease24 · 18/05/2025 13:46

There aren’t enough laws to protect residential spaces and peaceful enjoyment of them. Let’s at least support the ones we have.

TheOccupier · 18/05/2025 13:56

Are the neighbours still living there and just taking the odd airbnb booking to coincide with/fund their own holidays when they go away, or have they turned the house into a permanent holiday let? I might report the latter but not the former. If it's still their home they'll likely be selective about who they accept as guests.

The licence is a new way to tax the public in the most highly-taxed economy in the western world.

OP needs to wind in her neck, cease being so petty, and mind her own business

Do you live in Scotland? Seen the damage to local communities perpetrated by Airbnb?

MoveOnTheCards · 18/05/2025 14:16

Our old NDN’s tenant put their place on Airbnb (without permission from the owner) and it was a fucking nightmare.

A constant stream of different people trying to work out which house (terraced road), then how to get in. Loads of noise and a fair amount of antisocial behaviour, largely due to more people staying than the house could really accommodate. Many of the older local residents found it quite intimidating.

Oh dear.. sorry opinion police.

personally I think it’s petty and infantile to report other people just getting on with life and making a few pennies on the shite economic we live in.

unless it’s impacting on the OP then she should mind her own business.

Your attitude is why we have to have rules because people like you just want to do as you please with no regard for the well being or safety of others.
Making a bit in the side is why taxes are so high because so many of you are flouting the rules.
If everyone abided by the rules, taxes would be lower, safety would be paramount and everyone would be happier so how about you go and do some reading on morals.

Jeezitneverends · 18/05/2025 14:28

I’m kind of torn. I think Air BNBs in residential areas such as yours sounds, can be quite detrimental depending on how they get used-weekend let’s etc could be a pain in the neck, as you say with large a,punts of cars, people etc, but then you get a lot of people who use the, as a stopgap between houses etc and just live their lives like normal people 🤷🏼‍♀️

Riverswimmers · 18/05/2025 14:36

At the big picture level the legislation is there so if our dc want it,it will in some small way make it easier for them to live in Scotland - less airb&b means more long term rental or houses available to buy.

If people flout the legislation then that big picture impact is affected.

At the practical level it disturbs what is a stable residental area - more coming and going as people are on holiday and less residents to organise and run any community event or social groups.

Caterina99 · 18/05/2025 14:59

Its possible they have to apply for change of use planning permission as well? How long has it been an air b&b and how big is it?

It might not have affected you yet, but depending on the property, and sadly the type of guests, it could potentially generate a lot of noise, extra cars and antisocial behavior. People can be arses when drunk and on holiday, and it’s not pleasant to live next door to. Especially when it’s every single night!

I would definitely report it and let it go through the proper channels for approval. That doesn’t mean it won’t be approved, but at least these things have been considered, as well as the safety aspects. For example a holiday let has stricter fire regulations than a residential house.

Landlubber2019 · 18/05/2025 15:06

Yes I would report, we stayed in an air bnb where the upstairs flat was let to a group of youths. We had a full night of partying, the next morning we found our garden area littered with cigarette butt's, it was a nightmare. Luckily they vacated after 24 hours but i would hate to live next door to something like that.
