Advice on practical career for ds17?

DS is 17 and planning to leave school at the end of S5. He's very clear that he wants to do something practical and physical, moving around rather than sitting at a desk. So he definitely doesn't want to go to uni. He's smart, I think he'll get 3-4 Highers at B or C.

Everyone helpfully suggests that he should get an apprenticeship. We've been looking for months and not found anything he's really interested in. But we'll keep looking. Many of the construction company apprenticeships seem to be more around project management or civil engineering. He doesn't want to do that.

He'd love to work with a joiner but we haven't had any luck finding someone to take him on. We are trying really hard. It seems like it's a bit of a closed shop around here and if you don't have a dad or an uncle in the trade it's almost impossible to get in. We've contacted companies, we've asked on local Facebook groups, we've ask every tradesman who's worked on our house recently (we've had lots).

Our local college doesn't offer much in the way of practical courses and the ones that are on offer seem to run alongside work or work experience, which we're struggling to find for him.

Does anyone have any suggestions for routes we could try, or places we could look? It feels like with all the house building going on around us in particular it should be easy to find something but it's not working out that way so far. Maybe we're looking in all the wrong places.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you

Where are you based? If in Glasgow, I’ve recently seen an advertisement from a reputable company looking for an apprentice. I can forward the details on if he’s local/able to travel

What about school social media pages? I know DS often gets shared posts on his school social media about various apprenticeship opportunities. Welding seems to be really popular round our area. DS knows loads his age doing this (17/18).
Edited due to typo.

It's refreshing to see young people going into trades instead of uni...loads of routes into success - uni isn't the only way.

DS has applied to both uni and college as he wants to keep his options open at the end of S6.

We're looking around the Edinburgh, Midlothian area.

His school don't send much apart from the uni route. I'm disappointed actually with their lack of support. They're all about university sadly.

Has he considered something really outdoorsy? I noticed that The Cairngorms National Park was recruiting young people.

Could try electricity networks apprenticeship wise. Some great career opportunities long term and lots of work building networks for net zero. Scottish power have some in Scotland.

I must admit that most of the local schools are good at promoting apprenticeship opportunities. But it's a school with lots of young people in a mostly deprived area.

I am pleased apprenticeship routes are getting more attention these days. One day we will run out joiners, sparkies, and plumbers!

Have you looked at the big house builders? I’m sure it was David Wilson had banners up for apprenticeships a while ago at a couple of their sites.
Scottish water might suit him too in an operational role.

MrsAmaretto · 21/01/2025 18:03

Definetly speak to NHS Lothian’s early careers and apprenticeships team. There are so many different apprenticeships in the nhs. Perhaps get some work experience/shadowing arranged their too for an insight?

My DS is doing an electrician apprenticeship (which he loves) but he was struggling to get one at first and signed up to a pre apprenticeship year at college, where they do 5 weeks unpaid on sites and 5 weeks at college, my DS only ended up doing it for 2 months as after doing 5 weeks with a company my DS was then took on as an apprentice, I don't know if they offer the same for joinery, if it not it may be worth still doing the electrician one as it's mainly health & safety and working on big sites with lots of trades, so could be good experience
Also worth noting it's apprenticeship week in Feb so lots of places will be advertising then!

A friends son is doing an apprenticeship as a tree surgeon, outside and physical and absolutely thriving.

How did he find it? An advert or just word of mouth? It's so hard to find these things. Ds has cold called loads of places but no luck so far. He'll just have to keep looking

@Newbie5652

Would this appeal to him, OP?

What about being a plasterer? Good trade, good chance of homers later on. If you can get an apprenticeship obv.

jay55 · 22/01/2025 09:28

The tree surgeon, to be fair it was through sheer luck they found the advert and then knew someone at the firm so that gave the leg up securing it.
I do think half the issue is knowing what to search for.

Lovelysummerdays · 22/01/2025 14:59

It might be worth looking at local council. That’d also take on apprentice joiners/ plumbers/ electricians

Snowmanscarf · 22/01/2025 15:20

Look at individual company’s websites, and think outside the box. A lot of companies offer apprenticeships away from their core subject, so British Airways may do HR, for example.
