Advice on practical career for ds17?

DS is 17 and planning to leave school at the end of S5. He's very clear that he wants to do something practical and physical, moving around rather than sitting at a desk. So he definitely doesn't want to go to uni. He's smart, I think he'll get 3-4 Highers at B or C.

Everyone helpfully suggests that he should get an apprenticeship. We've been looking for months and not found anything he's really interested in. But we'll keep looking. Many of the construction company apprenticeships seem to be more around project management or civil engineering. He doesn't want to do that.

He'd love to work with a joiner but we haven't had any luck finding someone to take him on. We are trying really hard. It seems like it's a bit of a closed shop around here and if you don't have a dad or an uncle in the trade it's almost impossible to get in. We've contacted companies, we've asked on local Facebook groups, we've ask every tradesman who's worked on our house recently (we've had lots).

Our local college doesn't offer much in the way of practical courses and the ones that are on offer seem to run alongside work or work experience, which we're struggling to find for him.

Does anyone have any suggestions for routes we could try, or places we could look? It feels like with all the house building going on around us in particular it should be easy to find something but it's not working out that way so far. Maybe we're looking in all the wrong places.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you

The Army was offering practical apprenticeships. I saw one advertised today, a plumber.

Some of the St Andrews ones look great but they say you have to live within 20 miles of St Andrews. I figure since he won't be earning very much he'll really need to stay at home for the first year at least which is why we're looking around Edinburgh and Midlothian.

Thank you so much for every single idea. We're looking at them all. We just need one stroke of luck....

@Newbie5652

Which subjects will his Highers be in, OP?

Newbie5652 · 22/01/2025 18:20

Maths, physics, chemistry. And Nat 5 in woodwork and metalwork.

Not sure how well he'll do, he doesn't enjoy sitting down and learning or studying. He likes to be moving around

Has he considered the Armed Forces? Lots of career options for healthy young people and serious scope for promotion and pension.

DH has just retired after 25 years in his early 40s.

Those are good subjects to have done as Highers.

Do you think that he would like the RN Engineering option?

John Deere apprenticeship? www.deere.co.uk/en-gb/our-company/careers/about-apprenticeships

If he’s interested in construction, keep an eye out for construction works starting up near you. Sometimes the building firms have project obligations (particularly public sector works like schools) to employ apprentices from the local neighbourhood, but they are likely to be taken on at the early stages of the works.

The February apprentice fair someone mentioned above would be a good place to start.
