Where would you suggest moving to?

Currently live in South Lanarkshire, 10 minute train journey / 20 min bus journey from Glasgow City Centre. DH wants to move to somewhere more rural and would love to live in Barra or Uist, whereas I would like to stay near either Glasgow or Edinburgh for the amenities. DH wouldn't mind leaving all of that behind. The things I'd miss from having a city so close are: theatre and shows/ballet are my big 'thing' so I'm often in the Kings Theatre or Theatre Royal, cinema, gym and shops. DH wants to be out in nature and fish.

Does anyone know of a good place to move to that has:

Beautiful scenery
Spots to fish
Close to amenities

I don't think that I could live on an isle whereas DH would love to. Places that are not an option due to either living there previously are:

Argyll and Bute
Inverness
Scottish Borders

I'd really appreciate some suggestions!!

You need to stay somewhere that is still within striking distance of Edinburgh or Glasgow or you will hate the lack of culture. My first thought would be on the train lines. So west coast on the north Clyde coast, or Inverclyde or north Ayrshire. East coast = Fife. And choose one of the smaller towns or villages.

North Berwick and you have the train to Edinburgh

JackJarvisEsq · 05/10/2024 17:51

Helensburgh maybe?

my family live rurally (mainland) and it’s struggle enough without throwing in island considerations such as ferries

Livinginaclock · 05/10/2024 17:53

Definitely Helensburgh.
Everything rural on the doorstep, but easy city links too, and it's a thriving local community with most things for families.
ETA, the primary age kids will be wanting city amenities fairly soon.
My daughter was born and brought up here, it's great for kids, teens, not so much.

wildlygreen · 05/10/2024 17:58

Thanks for the posts ☺️
Helensburgh is in Argyll so unfortunately a no go.

Fife?
There's plenty of rural areas there fairly accessible to Edinburgh by train

Scirocco · 05/10/2024 18:55

Would places up by Balmaha/Drymen/Carbeth area work? You can easily get to Glasgow and Stirling from there and the landscapes are beautiful.

Inverclyde or North Ayrshire could be worth a look too.

JackJarvisEsq · 05/10/2024 19:38

Apologies I totally misread thinking you wanted Argyll 🙈

Hurdlin · 05/10/2024 22:43

Interested why a blanket no to Argyll, Helensburgh is a very different prospect to Tiree or Campbeltown. And would tick most of your boxes.

PippyPip · 05/10/2024 22:55

I was going to say Oban but that’s Argyle isn’t it so a no go.

Is it just Inverness that’s a no or the whole Highlands?

OptimismvsRealism · 05/10/2024 22:57

If he's not from the islands he has no idea.

Why is a previous place out even when as massive as those areas?

wildlygreen · 05/10/2024 23:08

@OptimismvsRealism he has lived in the Hebrides before.

@PippyPip just Inverness, DH is from the Highlands originally (very far up north). I also really don't like Oban.

@Hurdlin to be honest, I had a very traumatic time in Argyll for years and I just don't want to go back there. I spent time in most places there as well so I don't want to revisit those places.

No idea about schools but Killin has great fishing, beautiful scenery and not that far from Perth, Stirling, Glasgow or Edinburgh
I would move there in a heartbeat if my job went full WFH

Eatyourcrust · 06/10/2024 14:45

A lot depends on your budget.

Pitlochry. There is a small but very active arts scene there with theatre etc. and on the train line to Perth. Plenty of fishing spots and outdoors adventures. But properties are expensive.

Callander. No trains and cheaper than Pitlochry, but 20 mins from Killin and Loch Tay, and regular buses in to Stirling.

Vettrianofan · 06/10/2024 14:50

St Andrews. Short drive from Dundee. City life full of discovery.

SanctuaryCity · 06/10/2024 14:53

What’s your budget and what type of house do you need? There is no point suggesting North Berwick if you have £140k to spend and you need a four bedroom house…

wildlygreen · 06/10/2024 16:22

Budget would be about £315k max and needs to be a 3 bed (at least). Don't mind if it's a flat or a house.

What about Alness?

We nearly moved there, but stayed in Argyll (which I realise you don't want).

We're not keen on Oban either, although we're not very near to it.

Shame you don't want Inverness.

Largest combined arts organisation ( Eden Court) and everything on your door step with no need to travel.

Wouldn't move back to the central belt for all the tea in China!

I am sure you could get something on the East Neuk for that.

How common living in the Central Belt close to lots of amenities... Can't imagine why people would be buying up loads of newbuilds in the Central Belt and the ever expanding developments keep on expanding and eating up the green spaces. It's almost as if there's some kind of demand for people moving there!

The same could be said for Inverness..
