Where is nice to live in Dumfries & Galloway?

Currently in Borders. Will need to move next year.
D&G seems better value but I don't know it at all.

Where would be worth going to visit please?
I don't need Schools, although may still need local College at that point.

I'd like to be in a village so I don't have to drive, & can make new friends (single now). I'll need 3 beds & have a max of £175-200K.
Preferably somewhere that is welcoming to 'outsiders' (Borders varies wildly..)

I'd be grateful for any pointers.

I was in Kirkcudbright recently - lovely wee town. Don't know what the house prices are like though.

Castle Douglas is lovely as is Kirkcudbright. Newton Stewart/Creetown is nice too and borders South Ayrshire where I am so Newton is my nearest supermarket. So youd be just shy of 2hrs to Glasgow if you need some city vibes!

Castle Douglas seems lovely

I lived in Moffat for some years and loved it.

A few years in Dumfries town too we're also great.

I'd move back to either if I hit the chance.

Never felt unwelcome as an outsider.

Definitely Castle Douglas or Kirkcudbright.

There’s a book called Devorgilla Days about a woman who moved from London to D&G, she’s on Instagram too as Posh Pedlar. She didn’t know a single person and moved to a tiny cottage that needed doing up. It’s an interesting read and might give you some ideas! Good luck with the move 😊

Thank you all for the advice.
I will look at the other thread.
I will also have a look at the book.
I've a year more to serve in SB so I've a bit of time yet.

Kirkudbright (and surrounding villages) is a great little town and has a very active and friendly retirement community so lots of activities for all ages. Your options for houses in your budget will be quite limited I would have thought. Castle Douglas (and surrounding villages) is less picturesque but has very useful shops, quite a lot going on and I would have thought more properties in your budget. Dalbeattie is a small town close to Castle Douglas definitely not picturesque but I suspect cheaper than either Kirkudbright or Castle Douglas it has a reasonable selection of shops, it’s close to local woods to walk in and the pretty coastal villages of Kippford Rockcliffe and Sandyhills (all of which I think would be out of your budget) are very close by buses do run but really you’d need a car.
I find the area around all three towns very friendly, but lots of people comment on how friendly Dalbeattie is.
I know very little about colleges but all three have school going through to highers I believe but if you want a “college” then I suspect that would mean Dumfries all three have a regularish bus service.
The area around Wigtown/Newton Stewart/Creetown is very pretty but I hear from locals who’ve lived here many year it’s less friendly and “insular” but it is significantly cheaper. Stranraer is cheaper still but the general consensus is that it’s a dump and bloody cold and windy!
Also look around New Abbey close to Dumfries although I can’t comment on house prices and New Galloway cheaper than Kirkudbright and again meant to have a very active community but friends say it’s very wet and windy in the later!
