...within an hour, hour and a half drive from Kilmarnock.

It's our wedding anniversary next week and I'm looking for somewhere for one night, dinner, bed and breakfast. I've looked at loads but nothing is inspiring me. Can't be in Glasgow because LEZ and it's an expensive pita to take public transport from our semi rural house. Does anyone know of a hidden gem I've missed?

What about Stirling? Allan park is nice for food but never stayed in the rooms or Stirling Highland hotel? Are you looking for expensive or just nice/mid price?

HirplesWithHaggis · 09/11/2023 21:55

I'll have a look at Stirling, thanks. I want nice food not mass-catered, but not highest of high end. There's a surprising amount of seafood offered in Ayrshire and I can't eat it!

We did similar a couple of years ago and went to the ship inn in Elie but that's a bit out of your distance range. I think I Googled gastro pubs with rooms and had quite a choice but I can't remember where they were now.

Gather at Laggan, near Gatehouse of Fleet?
not a hotel but they have snugs you can stay in

BigBoysDontCry · 09/11/2023 22:03

Bridge Inn at Ratho?

The Crown in Peebles does lovely food, bar meals but really nice quality. I know they have rooms but again no idea what they are like.

I don’t know how far away it is but we had a great night at The Auldgirth Inn.

I can vouch for Allan Park. We're staying there for the 3rd time in a few weeks. Rooms are lovely, clean and cosy. Food is absolutely fantastic and there's a great atmosphere in the restaurant. The breakfast that comes with the room is excellent too. They're very good for dietary requirements.

Bagofmaltesers · 09/11/2023 22:13

Just checked - Auldgirth is just over an hour away from Kilmarnock. It’s definitely a foodie place and the room we stayed in was lovely. It’s very historic - there was a definite slope to the walls and floor but it’s been beautifully restored.

Do their rooms have baths, or just showers? I really, really fancy a long soak...

One of the rooms we have been in had a bath. The other didn't. I would say, the bathrooms are very basic. So not luxurious etc.

That does look lovely. Bonus points for blue cheese sauce for the steaks, but I wonder if 40 days aged makes them a bit gamey?

Pushmepullyou · 09/11/2023 22:27

Is 2hrs too far? The Newport in Newport on Tay looks stunning and we've planned a visit forever.

Too many teenage memories in Newport, anywhere in Fife really. Grin

Doune - the Woodside, owned by same people as Allan park but much nicer I feel the Allan park is a bit tired and lacks atmosphere especially recently. There is also medowpark, lots of lovely places in bridge of Allan too.

And I can't find their website for more info. Just a FB page. :(
