Weddings in Glasgow city centre

Hoping to get married in St Andrew's Cathedral and then have the reception in town- would cut down on costs for a lot of guests and then we'd not need to bother with any buses.

I want a package and really just want good value from it. A lot of the menus seem very fussy and we've both got big, old fashioned families who would appreciate soup over canapes.

House for an Art Lover is a possibility but think it's too far from the cathedral.

Royal college of physicians and surgeons is so beautiful inside and well worth checking out.

TubbyMcFatfuck · 24/09/2023 23:37

The Dakota Hotel?
The Blythswood Hotel?
Malmaison?

Opposite end of town from St Andrews but nice hotels

Thats because prom kids reappear in ball gowns holding their heels after pics by the river (looking at DD1).

We had an afternoon tea and it was ‘alright’, definitely just a coffee and roll destination for us now but it’s walking distance and beats the other local alternative (currently turning itself into a wedding venue).

Whats the other local?

ayrs going downhill - Fairfield also rad now…

RJnomore1 · 25/09/2023 00:21

I agree. The Balgarth, its mid makeover. Terrible food and drinks on our last few visits.

@RJnomore1 and @SadlyACupOfTeaDoesNotSolveEverything hello fellow ayr-types! Ayr so bad these days, makes me feel sad to come back. Can't believe RAD own BOD now, think they own everywhere? Fairfield as well?

Waves

They do, and the big house (that always had a giant Santa)that faces you as you come off the bypass and past burns centre. It’s for wedding guests etc. Apparently somewhere in Dumfriesshire now too.

LorraineBainMcFly · 25/09/2023 15:21

They have everywhere!. @purplecandle2 still ayrshire so further out than you, but what about Dumfries House for ceremony then Dumfries Arms for function?

StuffLoriThangs · 25/09/2023 15:38

If anyone (I don’t think this maybe applies to OP as they have their venue and are looking at city centre to avoid what I’m going to say)
comes across this - beware of using busses and the LEZ zone. Some busses aren’t up to code, so they will try and avoid the LEZ or may charge extra.

like I say, doesn’t necessarily apply to the OP but lots of people are suggesting Ayrshire (which is a great area and loads of great venues) but it’s a bit different to what the OP stated

sakuramiyagi · 25/09/2023 15:55

We had our service and reception at House for an Art Lover. It was a really great day. Lots of space for guests and there wasn't that awkward corralling of people switching the room up for the evening reception as those are held downstairs.

Best feature at the venue is the Bride & Groom room with private toilet facilities. You can use it to get ready prior to your service. We didn't as we had hotel rooms at the Dakota but it was great for after the ceremony and during the night to change/refresh etc.

Plonkydonkey · 25/09/2023 15:59

Troon is gorgeous. Lots of B&B's there. We got married in a church in troon and then hired the concert hall for the wedding. Disabled access, ice cream and a stroll on the beach. And we had fish n chips for our meal with rolls n bacon/sausage /egg at night.

Broomhillda · 25/09/2023 16:00

Try Trades Hall. City Centre.

purplecandle2 · 25/09/2023 16:15

Yeah, outside the city centre is not for us! Especially as they seem to be dearer plus a bus.

HfAL seems v highly recommended by everyone, so will investigate further.

Next q- would you expect a bus put on from Broomielaw to HfAL?

Yup. We had a bus from the southside to town for our reception. Although I suppose some people might take their cars as HFAL maybe isn't that handy for taxis.

purplecandle2 · 25/09/2023 16:33

That’s what puts me off. I think I’ll look more closely into city centre hotels because it would be so much more convenient all round.

SadlyACupOfTeaDoesNotSolveEverything · 25/09/2023 16:48

I think anything outwith the immediate city centre you need to offer transportation.

Royal college of physicians is definitely worth a look.

Bugdem123 · 25/09/2023 17:12

I got married in Arta last year. It was an amazing day from start to finish. The food was great, the staff were lovely and it was easy to decorate as it's mostly already done! We chose it as half our guests were coming from down south; most of them stayed in the Fraser Suites which is a 2 min walk down the street. Would highly recommend them.

theinnergame · 25/09/2023 17:22

I can't help really (had ours at Trades House with caterers and a band - was not much more bother than an all in one place - and was very reasonable - hall hire cost half on a Friday compared with Saturday) but I do know an epic wedding photographer - pm me if you are interested. Honest, he is amazing (I'm family).

I'd definitely recommend the college of physicians and surgeons, I've been to quite a lot of events there and their in house catering is brilliant. Sensible tasty not overly fussy food. Not a hotel, but its location is in such close proximity to many hotel options.

We've also been to a lovely wedding at the Blythswood Hotel. Food was great and they did the whole.thing there, but I don't know what their max numbers are - this was smallish at maybe 60 guests

RJnomore1 · 25/09/2023 20:42

@LorraineBainMcFly @SadlyACupOfTeaDoesNotSolveEverything I just popped in to say not Ayr station hotel either.. bloody awful. My husband was at work in the station, noones hurt thankfully. Watching the fb live. (Sorry op!)

RJnomore1 · 25/09/2023 20:44

Oh and RAD have just bought the seamill hydro!

HerMammy · 25/09/2023 20:48

I wouldn't be impressed if I was expected to trek to HfAL from St Andrews, it's a fair distance
