Weddings in Glasgow city centre

Hoping to get married in St Andrew's Cathedral and then have the reception in town- would cut down on costs for a lot of guests and then we'd not need to bother with any buses.

I want a package and really just want good value from it. A lot of the menus seem very fussy and we've both got big, old fashioned families who would appreciate soup over canapes.

House for an Art Lover is a possibility but think it's too far from the cathedral.

Have been to weddings at Arta and Corinthian which have been nice.

Pheasant28761 · 24/09/2023 19:14

I bussed everyone to house for an art lover from the west end - they were fantastic if you were happy with people travelling in between service and reception.

Sloans
Box Hub
some hotels around the area?
There are some lovely places towards Merchant City

you might be looking for a more bespoke type package

StuffLoriThangs · 24/09/2023 19:23

The briggait is a dress your
owner type place but I think that means you get the freedom of your own caterers?

purplecandle2 · 24/09/2023 19:24

If I was heart set on HfAL I wouldn't mind but I'm just not that bothered. We've got quite a few people flying in and a lot of people will stay over so I don't want them rushing all over the place.

A hotel probably would suit us best.

No, don't want to do any of that. Just take my life savings and put it all on for me please Grin

RJnomore1 · 24/09/2023 19:25

Sloan’s came to mind for me too

purplecandle2 · 24/09/2023 19:29

You can have macaroni cheese at Sloans! SOLD Shock

TheMurderousGoose · 24/09/2023 19:35

Sloan's is nice but the rooms are up a couple of flights of stairs (no lift) so can be less than ideal if you have any guests with mobility issues.

purplecandle2 · 24/09/2023 19:41

I've only been in it once and do remember it being very old and rickety. I think I'll need quite a few maybes because we're hoping for 2024 ....

A hotel probably would suit us all best and we could stay over. I'd like that.

Grand central hotel? You could walk there.

Renfrew Ferry is good but a bit far.

Babity Bowster is sweet.

Can you stop hire at andrews in the sq? Cafe source was there.

FitAt50 · 24/09/2023 19:59

We got married in the Grand Central hotel and it was fabulous.

purplecandle2 · 24/09/2023 20:13

St Andrews in the Square would be perfect but I think it's permanently closed. Such a shame. I went to a wedding there years ago.

Was the Grand Central worth the money? We met for our first date under the clock so it would be very sweet.

Piper's Tryst is quite nice. West? The Old Fruitmarket?

HerMammy · 24/09/2023 21:11

You can have your service in House for an Art Lover, everything in the one venue.

BlueThursday · 24/09/2023 21:22

Trades Hall?

dearanon · 24/09/2023 21:43

I've been to weddings in the piping centre, house for an art lover, cottiers, etc. Pollock house and pollocksheilds borough hall are stunning venues and close to the city centre

I know you're trying to stay in Glasgow but brig o doon in Ayr was stunning and the food was amazing.

RJnomore1 · 24/09/2023 23:03

Brig a doon has just been bought by the rad group. Ok but not worth the trek from Glasgow. Also I love that way and I am utterly bored going to weddings in itv(which I accept is a me problem!)

SadlyACupOfTeaDoesNotSolveEverything · 24/09/2023 23:05

@RJnomore1 not to mention the new decor 🫣. That said it does a decent coffee and bacon roll!

RJnomore1 · 24/09/2023 23:10

I haven’t been out since it’s done up! Was invited to a wedding next Sunday but can’t make it. My friend went for dinner and hated. It.
the trot down the massive stairs in heels is awful.

its lovely for a prom, mind you!

SadlyACupOfTeaDoesNotSolveEverything · 24/09/2023 23:14

The newish Virgin Hotel is a few doors along from the Cathedral and has a lovely (but modern) suite for 100-150 guests.

House of an art lover do full weddings.

The old fruit market with your own caterers.

Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow also do weddings.

Thats because prom kids reappear in ball gowns holding their heels after pics by the river (looking at DD1).

We had an afternoon tea and it was ‘alright’, definitely just a coffee and roll destination for us now but it’s walking distance and beats the other local alternative (currently turning itself into a wedding venue).

Twwodoorsaway · 24/09/2023 23:21

No idea on costs and it was a few years ago but we went to a reception at the Merchant’s House, just on the edge of George Square. Lovely building and reception room.

MinnieMouse0 · 24/09/2023 23:22

I came to suggest Grand Central Hotel but also the Science museum does weddings I think?! Had my grad ball there and it was v cool.

You have probs seen this already but some good suggestions in this article!

Been to nice weddings in:
House for an Art Lover
Sloans
Arta
Oran Mor
St Luke’s (the barras)

All great weddings and lots of stairs, not sure which had lifts and which didn’t (if that would be an issue).
Arta did my sil whole wedding and it was lovely though a bit posh with canapés in the courtyard room or whatever it’s called.
Sloans was a brilliant wedding though I seem to remember that the room we danced in was quite small. Brilliant night though.
Oran Mor was a great wedding, definitely lots of stairs. Massive room for the evening event with big high ceilings, did have a kind of night club feel to it.
House for an Art Lover - been to two weddings there. Both lovely with great food and both went really smoothly and were very well organised.
St Luke’s was a beautiful venue but during waiting times it was just in the pub punters which I wasn’t so keen on.
