Never heard of circles for roundabouts. I must be too far north.

I must be too far south. Never ever heard of circles.

The use of the C word as a term of endearment. Rife in Glasgow.

I have never heard that word used as a term of endearment in Scotland and I live half my life in Glasgow.
Heard it used a lot in Australia.
Apart from Austrslia, the only place I see it used is here on MN

chesterelly1 · 29/07/2023 09:55

Apologies if I missed it already being mentioned but someone just sent me this and it reminded me of Tunnocks. Not forgetting all the other Scottish brands that make us proud, Barrs, Baxters, Deans shortbread, Mackies, Border biscuits, Simmers, Simon Howie for example.

Coat hanging on a shoogly peg

When I first heard nippy sweetie I knew exactly what it meant without explanation 😁

Yes I've seen that one in the good old P and J many times.

Also "X and Y are fair chuffed to announce the birth of......". That one gets on my wick.

Pinkitydrinkity · 29/07/2023 12:43

In a guddle

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 29/07/2023 12:58

"Bawbag" is one of my favourite words.

Along with 'bawhair' being an extremely tiny unit of measurement!

Moomindroll · 29/07/2023 13:08

A guddle and a fankle being very different things : kippers are guddly, rope and kickers get in a fankle.

stovies - they don’t seem to exist South of the border

being “married on” rather than “married to”

Sectarian education (not a good thing)

a nip and a dram as undefined quantities but you unerringly know what the right amount is

first footing

birling - means spinning but makes spoonerised Shirley bassey amusing!

aye, right Are we the only place where two positives make a negative?

ssd · 29/07/2023 13:29

Whats outwith.? Haven't heard that one

Mrsjayy · 29/07/2023 13:34

ssd · 29/07/2023 13:29

Whats outwith.? Haven't heard that one

Means outside of so outwith opening hours . Or outwith an area etc etc

ssd · 29/07/2023 13:36

Is it not a real word?

I didn't know Grin

Piggywaspushed · 29/07/2023 13:36

There is a green hill far away
Without a city wall

Is what we sang in Scotland , which is an older form of the lyrics.

The modernised 'English' version is

Outside a city wall.

Piggywaspushed · 29/07/2023 13:37

aye, right Are we the only place where two positives make a negative?

Don't think so - American say 'sure, you did'.

Mrsjayy · 29/07/2023 13:38

Outwith my remit, outwith the terms and conditions, outwith the parameters, etc.

Piggywaspushed · 29/07/2023 13:37

Thank you - that makes sense even though I’ve never seen it in the wild

onitlikeacarbonnet · 28/07/2023 21:24

Yes!!

Onit, I was just thinking of you yesterday. I’m so glad to see you here. How are?

I posted on your threads under a different name. I’ve thought of you often and I hope life is treating you and the children well.
