Clarty, glaikit and mockett also good words.

Moaning that the good telly in the summer holidays didn't start till the English schools were off.

Glen Michael's Cartoon Cavalcade that showed approx 90 seconds of each cartoon each week.

Going to the baths and the pictures.

Yes!

the bidie in made me laugh.

RaraRachael · 27/07/2023 16:41

Whsf school did you go to has never been a thing in the north east.

Or What age are you come to think of it.

Forgot, clapping a dog. Family member visited her parents with their English BF. BF did indeed give the dog a round of applause 🤣

Hahaha. I remember not long after meeting my Irish DH. Asking if he wanted to clap the dug. He replied "no....?" quizzically. It confused me as I knew he was a dog lover.

Mrsjayy · 27/07/2023 17:16

What do .the rest of the UK doif they are not clapping their dogs ,?

EvelynBeatrice · 27/07/2023 17:17

'Away and.....' as an instruction eg 'away and check if the postie's been'; 'away up the stairs hen and check I unplugged my hairdryer '.
Also 'doolally' for a person who has lost their mental acuity!

Mrsjayy · 27/07/2023 17:18

Oh Aye . AWAY and... we are a peculiar race 😃

EvelynBeatrice · 27/07/2023 17:19

And 'chuckies ' meaning little stones often on a garden path. That might be a west of Scotland one

Dontlistitonfacebook · 27/07/2023 17:21

A friend moved from England to Scotland and went round to someone's house. Her young child went straight in, interacted well. Someone commented "she's no strange, is she!". Meaning, she's not shy of people she doesn't know.

Friend thought it most odd (why would my child be strange??).

EvelynBeatrice · 27/07/2023 17:24

A friend told me of an incident where her understanding of the term 'dogging' ( which was common parlance for playing truant from school in her 1980s West of Scotland schooldays) caused some confusion when others were discussing a tv documentary on the subject ( which covered the behaviour of single men in lay-bys....)

We said chuckies in Aberdeen too! Usually pink granite stones but maybe that was just my area/time period.

CindersAgain · 27/07/2023 17:24

Pat or stroke them.

Ah of course 😄

Pinkitydrinkity · 27/07/2023 17:33

I think going for a daunder is a Scottish thing too?

Gingerwarthog · 27/07/2023 17:34

@Mrsjayy
Or 'smooth' them (SW)

newfloorplease · 27/07/2023 17:47

@RaraRachael "Who belongs this coat".
Probably from Gaelic - Irish Gaelic " Cé leis an cóta ?" - who is with the coat ? Smile

boniobiscuit · 27/07/2023 17:48

Describing somebody as being 'a wee bit pan-loafy' as in they're acting/speaking a bit posher than they were brought up.

Stoor for dust.

Being told by your ma that your room's a midden, meaning it's in an absolute state of disarray.

'That dogs a right sook'- the dog likes loads of cuddles/is very affectionate.

Moomindroll · 27/07/2023 17:49

The bunker
the bucket man drives the bucket motor and the scaffy sweeps
the sweat runs down the shuch of your back
and juice covers all cold nonalcoholic liquids apart from water

Years ago I added outwith to my word dictionary because what do Microsoft know?

“see you” can either be the start of adulation or a fight

desperate longing and gallows humour are the sustenance of the average Scotland football fan (but maybe not this time)

Heurgh · 27/07/2023 17:51

Empire biscuits, though.

As if it wasn't enough to add industrial jam and glacé icing to shortbread, there's the wee 'fuck you, dentists' jelly tot on top to finish.

Mrsjayy · 27/07/2023 17:56

We still have bunkers the Dds are all la de da and have worktops in their kitchens 😀

Reeniefitheclose · 27/07/2023 18:16

What d'ye (which is more of a gentle j sound) cry it?

Shree for three.

Mrsjayy · 27/07/2023 18:24

Gingerwarthog · 27/07/2023 17:34

@Mrsjayy
Or 'smooth' them (SW)
