Plans to scrap exams for 15 and 16 yr olds

What do we all think of the plans to scrap Nat 5 exams?

Lots of positives but no exams in S4 means the first time a young person sits an exam is at Highers.

That will be quite a shock to the system.

What are private schools likely to do? I'm outside the UK, but a friend of mine is planning to move back to Scotland with her kids in a few years, and is looking at private schooling.

Private schools are independent, so they are free to choose whichever curriculum and exam boards they want.
Some private schools in Scotland do English GCSEs and A levels and some do IB. Many do the Scottish qualifications. It's just a case of looking at what individual schools do

Scottish education used to be the envy of the world. It was widely recognised as the way to climb up the social ladder and get out of poverty. What on earth's gone wrong?

Education is recognised the world over as THE way out of poverty.
I despair when yet another scheme to help alleviate poverty in Scotland is being mooted.
It's good education and availability of quality jobs which is really the only sustainable way, anything else is just a sticking plaster

Most private schools in Scotland already do GCSEs and A Levels instead of Scottish qualifications.

No they don't. A couple of the VERY expensive schools like Fettes or Gordonstoun offer A-levels or International Baccalaureate, probably in recognition of the fact that most of their students are from England or overseas. Your George Watsons, Heriots, High School of Glasgow, Dollar Academy, Hutcheson's Grammar, Lomond School - all do Nat 5s and Highers, and Advanced Highers.

For my kids with their university educated parents who are motivated and interested in supporting their learning, there is a lot to be said about rushing through S3 or S4 material as quickly as possible, leaving more time for teaching to the Higher exams in S5. Ever since I was at school in the dates of O-Grades there was always this concern that the level jump from Nat 5 / Standard Grade / O-Grade up to Higher was a LOT and if you could tweak the curriculum to start teaching the Higher course in January rather than after the exams in May, it might make S5 all a bit less manic.

But then you have kids who will not be doing Highers for whatever reason. They NEED their Nat 5s to get into college or onto an apprenticeship. Even if they ARE doing Highers many courses require at least a B in a Nat 5 subject - DS is looking at business studies degrees which need a B in Nat 5 maths at least (if you don't have the Higher).

This proposal is clearly nonsense though, but the SNP have form for making rubbish decisions. Ferries, anyone? Motorhomes?

My middle child won’t do Highers. What of him? What course does he do it Nat 4s and Nat 5s disappear? How does he prove his literacy and numeracy to college or employers? And what if those employers or colleges are in England? I know children who leave with Nat 3 as that is their attainment level. Perhaps it will be like going to Edinburgh University where you now leave with an attendance certificate?

@GulesMeansRed

I will change 'most' to 'many' then. 😳
