Anyone work at Glasgow airport?

Sorry probably one of the weirdest requests for info!!

I'm have a SEN son who is due to go on holiday abroad with his dad for the first time. He's extremely anxious (but still excited).

Me and ExH been separated 8 years and currently not on best of terms.

Anyway, after my exH booked the holiday with DS. I thought I'd take the opportunity to go away over the same dates (never been abroad without DS but since he'll be away I thought why not?!).

DS was due to leave in the morning and I booked all flights etc for the afternoon. However exH has now told me that he had changed his mind about the flight but as it's the same day didn't realise it would be an issue.

My flight is now due to depart 10 mins after my DS!!!! I'm so so stressed and anxious that I bump into him at the airport and he has a meltdown and refuses to go with his dad (he's usually fine once he's left me but hates seeing me and at the airport would be a disaster).

I've got a plan to leave well before him & his dad, have booked fast track security and booked into the adult only airport lounge. The part where I'm worried about bumping into him is at the departure gates. I've been hardly sleeping and feel sick at the thought (it's hard to explain without seeing how severe this could be for DS).

What I was hoping is that our departure gates are likely to be far apart as I'm EasyJet and he's tui. Is this likely or are the gates assigned randomly and any airline can have a departure gate anywhere?

Thanks so much for reading such a long ramble & bizarre question!!

I used to travel on the same flight every week for months and gates would often change from one week to the next, although they often have a type of gate for certain airlines or size of plane e.g. at Edinburgh Ryanair use the gates where you have to walk downstairs and across the tarmac to board, whereas BA use the gates with air bridges to the plane (which are probably more expensive!).
You could check the online departures the week or two before you fly to see which gates they use. It would only be a guide though.

MsAnna · 16/06/2023 11:53

You could book into one of the lounges which would limit your time out in the main airport, watch the screens from there.

Coronationstation · 16/06/2023 12:13

@MsAnna you missed the bit about the lounge! "I've got a plan to leave well before him & his dad, have booked fast track security and booked into the adult only airport lounge."

Thanks @MsAnna - I'm booked into the adult only lounge so I'm relaxed about that bit. Felt slightly better for a few days and now I'm obsessing over the departure gates!!

Thanks! Annoyingly the timetable seems to change the week we fly (prob to coincide with school hols).

I've been monitoring other flights. There look to be 3 areas in Glasgow airport. The majority of EasyJet flights seem to go from one of them, BA from another and then the rest from the 3rd.

This gave me a bit of comfort but then there seem to be random curveballs to my theory and an EasyJet one goes from the "other" terminal.

It's probably a question nobody can answer but I'm driving myself mad!! I must sound like a lunatic!

Sunhat/cap and big glasses? Wear something you would normally never wear?

That does sound difficult OP. Could call the airport maybe?

@Randobelia I think I'll need to go with the plan of a disguise and buy a new dress he's never seen!!!
I'm just making myself sick at the thought which I'm trying not to as I don't want DS to pick up on anything.

It's stopping me even looking forward to my first child free holiday in 10years!

I was literally about to say the same thing.

You might not even see him but try to disguise yourself as much as possible and hopefully because he won't be expecting to see you, he won't recognise you even if your near each other.

ErmentrudeTheCow · 16/06/2023 12:22

Agree with PP. Summer holiday clothes you don't normally wear. Hair up under baseball cap, dark glasses.

Good luck and have a lovely holiday

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 16/06/2023 12:25

I don’t, sooty. Just wondering could you wear a hat/glasses too just incase?

Glasgow airport is quite big but gates always seem to be a bit random imo

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 16/06/2023 12:26

Cross posts 🤣

Rooma · 16/06/2023 12:26

Depends on where you are flying to. Domestic and international flights tend to leave from different parts of airport so if one party was flying abroad on ba via Heathrow and the other flying straight to Europe for example on TUI or jet2 then you'd probably be okay.

My worry would be that you're both flying from what I call the international bit (where most international flights board ) which is quite open and it'd probably be quite easy to run into you as you queue to board

Randobelia · 16/06/2023 12:28

I think that's all you can do and hopefully if you have a plan in place will give you some reassurance. Is his dad a front of the queue/last to board type? Maybe take a magazine too and if you do have to be in the same bit can sit behind that.

Rooma · 16/06/2023 12:28

Never mind! Just read your post properly. TUI definitely flies from international but. EasyJet has its own gates v separately but i always thought that was for domestic flights only. Could be wrong

teadi · 16/06/2023 12:32

We're both going within Europe. One EasyJet and one tui.

I've been checking and from what I can see all all tui flights seem to leave from gate 27 and up (see pic)

A lot of EasyJet flights (domestic and European) seem to go from gates 1-12.

However I've then seen random EasyJet flights going from 27+ (both European and domestic).

I'm driving myself nuts over something that I won't know til right before the flight

Anyone work at Glasgow airport?

I was hoping to figure out a system like this, but yesterday and Paris & Alicante flight left from the lower gates with other EasyJet flights but a flight to Bristol has literally juts left from gate 36.

Think I need to give up on trying to predict this and focus on my disguise. Hopefully I don't look too suss and get stopped by security 😂

Rooma · 16/06/2023 12:40

Yes I guess they can change on the day depending on gate availability. I think for certain you can assume TUI will go from the far left gates. EasyJet is a bit more variable but if you get a lower gate you're good. The adults only lounge however is I think much further back into airport so if you were leaving from gate 7 or 8 I'd skip the lounge and go straight there to stop the risk of being spotted on your way to the gate. Bring snacks there's very little down in that part of airport

@Rooma thanks so much!

And to everyone else on the thread too. I know I'm being a bit(!) OTT and obsessive but I'm already struggling with DS emotions/anxiety over his holiday.

Can't wait to be on the plane with the doors closed!!! (Not to get away from him, just to avoid any further stress/anxiety/meltdowns than are needed!)

Not at all, it's a big deal! For both of you. I hope it goes okay and he has a brilliant time and so do you too.

MsAnna · 16/06/2023 14:27

OP I forgot to wish you a happy and relaxing holiday.

Even if the lounge turns out to be a bit of a trek from your gate (wherever that might turn out to be!) why don't you stay in the lounge until boarding is starting. They'll have boards in the lounge. You'll have plenty of time to get to your gate.

When the boards say 'go to gate', there's inevitably just more sitting, in a remote area with fewer facilities. We never go straightaway.

Staying out of the way until as late as possible will minimise the chances of bumping into each other. Have a lovely holiday.

Thanks @Robbiethedog - that's the plan! And it sounds so simple when someone else says it!

It's because our flights are 10 mins apart im thinking we'll both be going to the gates/boarding around the same. I've been on holiday before where there are 2 adjacent queues for 2 separate gates, and the queues are alongside each other! Hopefully the chances of that are low!

@MsAnna

apologies. I shall now put myself on the naughty step for not finishing the thread before posting.💐

my only excuse is I've been
up since 5 (for the past month!) & my coffee machine is broken, I am tired, severely lacking in caffeine & thus a tad snippy!!

sorry.
