I’m trying to find information out if there’s a daily charge (like in London) or if it’s just a flat out £60 fine. I’ve got about 8 events booked in Glasgow between June and October and it’s going to prove tricky and risky to not take my car. I’ll have to just ditch my plans if it’s going to cost a fortune on too
of what I’ve already paid.

I really wish public transport was a better option to and from rural parts of Scotland late at night.

The LEZ won't apply unless you have a really old vehicle. Its Euro 4/6 or better (depending if petrol or diesel) which is the vast majority of normal cars.

Staggie · 20/04/2023 17:09

It's not like London don't worry.

midgemadgemodge · 20/04/2023 17:31

You can check your registration

www.glasgow.gov.uk/23026

And park and ride might also be of help - ours is outside the lez as far as I can make out

NotTooOldPaul · 20/04/2023 17:31

If you are worried why not park and ride? There are trains and buses until late at night.

LittleDitto · 20/04/2023 19:06

Yeah my car doesn’t pass. It’s older.

Unfortunately the park and rides aren’t a great option for all of them! I’ve found the late night transport a bit unreliable. I have a (1 1/2 hour drive on top of it)

I’m just trying to find out if there is a flat daily rate you can pay like the ones in other cities.

Depends what you class as 'really old' I have a 2014 plate and it won't be allowed in the LEZ. I don't think that is very old, I only replace my car's when they are no longer economical for me to run. I buy outright and not on finance so can't afford to replace a vehicle that is running perfectly fine. I actually chose this car as it's £0 road tax due to it's efficiency.

OP there is no daily fee and the fine is £60-£480 for cars that don't meet the criteria. Can you park somewhere just outside the LEZ boundary and taxi/bus/walk the rest?

I think it's really poorly thought through because (unlike Edinburgh) Glasgow doesn't have good park and ride facilities.

LittleDitto · 20/04/2023 21:41

Mine is also 2014. Really can’t afford to change it just now, I had to change it 2 years ago when my last car died and it’s all I was able to buy. I need a large diesel car for work as I’m rural! I’m not in Glasgow super regularly thankfully. I had hoped there might be a daily charge and I could have afforded to pay £10 or £15 for the sake of each visit but it looks like the costs increase (double then treble!) if you’re caught again within 90 days. I had hoped I was reading the wrong info.

I’ve looked into walking but I really wouldn’t feel very safe. Taxis can be hard to get! My car was broken into and the windows smashed in the last time I left it at a park and ride. It was a few years ago now but I’ve never felt safe with it since.

Never mind. I can still attend one of them and will just have to cut out the others.

Where are you going to in Glasgow?

Oncetheystartschool · 21/04/2023 07:11

Where are you coming from and where do you need to be in Glasgow? If you're comijg from North/East on M80 or M74 then there is a massive park and ride at Robroyston train station which would take you into Queen St / George Square or similar at Croy if you're coming on M8 from East.

KnittingNeedles · 21/04/2023 07:57

It's a flat out £60 fine. And then £120 if you do it again, £240 a third time and so on.

It's also not just "really old vehicles" - I have a 16 plate diesel VW which does not comply, although DH's 65 plate diesel does. It's a total pain in the neck.

KnittingNeedles · 21/04/2023 08:01

Hmm. All the way through tehy have said my diesel won't comply as it's standard 5 or whatever. Put the reg into the checker and it says it does. Happy days.

We are planning on keeping it until it falls to bits in that case.

KnittingNeedles · 21/04/2023 08:44

Right I am now Confused .com.

The blurb on the LEZ website says that diesel cars must meet the Euro 6 standards. Mine does not, it's a Euro 5. So it doesn't qualify.

But when I put the registration number into the site, it says it qualifies.

What a mess. I have emailed an urgent enquiry to Glasgow city council asking what the hell is going on as we were making plans to sell the car and spend ££££ on one which is compliant and obviously if mine is, we won't have to do that.

I will not be the only person in this situation.

KnittingNeedles · 21/04/2023 08:46

And to add to my confusion - email response from Glasgow council saying "nothing to do with us, LEZ checker is run by the Scottish Government, contact them".

Sugarfree23 · 21/04/2023 13:41

@LittleDitto what direction are you coming from?
There are loads of train stations that have free parking but just not very well advertised.

CrackerAndPudding · 21/04/2023 13:46

Where are you coming from? If its South side or the weat you'll have lots of subway park and ride options,North or east will be trains or the car park just at the barrowlands/glasgow green

CrackerAndPudding · 21/04/2023 13:47

*West!

Itwasnaeme · 21/04/2023 13:51

I have a perfectly serviceable car, MOT'd annually with little bother, and it won't pass.

Itwasnaeme · 21/04/2023 13:52

Thankfully I am mostly just on the M8, which isn't included! Hope there's never a closed bit and a diversion, would seem unfair to fine you for that though

Sugarfree23 · 21/04/2023 14:48

The scheme in Glasgow is badly thought out. Basically forcing people to up grade their cars.

While I agree I wouldn't necessarily leave my car in a station car park some are better than others and some stations are very close to residential areas, its a bit 🤫 but parking outside a random house might be an option!

ColdAsAWitchsTit · 22/04/2023 13:45

Our 16 plate is not compliant. You could park out of the zone and get the train or subway in. As pp says, fines are cumulative so by the time you'd got to your 8th event you would be fined an absolute fortune!

user1471447863 · 23/04/2023 12:29

I've engaged with them on FB every time they've posted some LEZ update for the past few years asking about a pay to access charge like london for those occasions when you need (not necessarily want) to drive into the city centre. Seems to go right over their head that there will be occasions when people will need to but no they won't implement such a system. It purely a punitive and prohibition based system.

Public transport can be shit in Glasgow/to get to some surroundings areas. On a Sunday the subway stops at 18:00, which is an improvement on what it used to do but no use if you'd thought of using the shields road park and ride for a late afternoon/evening event.

Sugarfree23 · 23/04/2023 12:38

It's just so badly though out.
Cars are generally getting cleaner and more environmentally friendly anyway.

Why force people to upgrade perfectly good cars to trade them in take on more debt in the middle of a COL crisis.

Have they even thought about the environmental impact of scraping cars before they reach the end of their natural life cycle.

Meanwhile the SNP has a £110k desail drinking toy parked on the MILs driveway

JuneShitfield · 23/04/2023 12:51

Weird. My car is 2014, but Euro 6 compliant (diesel). It’s compliant in the London ULEZ, but not in the new Glasgow scheme. Seems odd.

KnittingNeedles · 23/04/2023 14:06

Have you put your plate into the checker, @ColdAsAWitchsTit ?

https://www.lowemissionzones.scot/vehicle-registration-checker

Mine is not compliant and it says it is. There must be lots of us in that situation. Interesting legal point though - what if the checker tells you that your car is OK, and then you get a fine in the post?

user1471447863 · 23/04/2023 14:19

@KnittingNeedles keep a screenshot of page saying you are compliant very safe. Could be very useful if you do have to drive in and they ever change their mind. You've done all that is required of you - you've gone online and used their checker tool and been told you are good to go. You've no need to ever go check again for the same car.
