It’s so cold. Our house is 15 degrees, less at night and dh is still refusing to put the heating on till at least November. We have wee ones and even with loads of layers, I wfh and I’m freeeezing! His fam down south aren’t putting theirs on till Jan 🙄 and he’s trying to compete. But we stay in Scotland…
Have you put yours on yet??

I've put mine on a timer to come on if house gets lower than 16 for an hour in the morning and a few hours in the evening.
Wearing hoodies etc and using blankets to stay warm. This winter isn't going to be fun.

sparklecement · 28/09/2022 22:27

I’d rather sit in the dark than be cold. Mine was on this morning for an hour and then about 1.5 hours at 6. Took the chill off and got some washing dry.

tillyandmilly · 28/09/2022 22:31

Nope - we are in the south and love in a top floor flat so we are getting our lower flats heat!

Thatboymum · 28/09/2022 22:34

Absolutley I’ve had mine on for about two weeks with the hive permanently set to click on at 22 lol. I’m so glad I don’t have a man to tell me no tho my best friends husband took the thermostat off the wall this week and to work with him so she didn’t have it on all day haha

giggly · 29/09/2022 11:44

Yeah typo, 30 would be nice and bikinis in the house if that warm😂😂 should have been 20

NancyDrooo · 29/09/2022 12:04

I cried yesterday I was so cold. Need to get a heater in my office as can’t justify putting the radiators on when there’s only me here all day.

Anyone know what’s the cheapest type of heater? Oil filled? Halogen?

I have it on when my kids are here. Our front room is open plan so downstairs is absolutely freezing. Last night the kids said they were going to g

AlwaysChangingNames123 · 29/09/2022 13:54

Oops sorry posted too soon,

The kids said they were going to sit upstairs as it was so much warmer. Their only 5 and 7, we have foeecy pyj's, wool socks, dressing gowns and their still cold.

AlwaysChangingNames123 · 29/09/2022 13:55

I live alone with my kids but if I had a partner who did that he'd be single. That's not okay

Haha? That's not a haha moment.

That's abuse.

Neither you or your friend recognise this?

I can absolutely clarify he done it as a joke , they couldn’t have a happier healthy relationship. Having been in a domestic relationship for 5 years this man couldn’t treat my friend like a queen more if he tried.
she is a cold person and she has it on at 30 all day every day and he’s a hot person and hates coming in to a sauna they have the usual couple debates about this where he always looses and it was absolutley a joke when he took the hive thermostat to work.
so yes it was a haha deffo not abuse

ThorsBedazzler · 29/09/2022 15:46

Yes, have it on timer for the morning and evening at the moment. But I'm going to turn it off again as after we replaced the windows the house is a lot better st retaining heat. It was too hot today after morning heating blast and sun streaming in the windows.

Pasadenadreaming · 29/09/2022 15:54

Not yet, yesterday I was chilly and so wrapped up in a blanket for wfh but looks like our temp didn't actually dip much below 16.6 and today it's warmed up a little with the sun coming in. Trying to hold off as long as possible.

His actions, because he doesn't like to come in to a warm house, say otherwise. Defence is common when you can't see it though. Ask yourself what the joke was?

I think given that she has the hive app on her phone and was able to cook herself indoors regardless of the missing thermostat says it all , it was meant to be humorous it was very clearly a prank and everybody including best friend found it hillarious. He is a joker to nature and the most gentle man I’ve ever met. Only mumsnet would auto assume abuse and not see the light hearted humour in an otherwise very happy couple 🥴

Actually don't see the humour, even more so now you have added in the detail that the thermostat is redundant anyway. What on earth!?

I'm from Scotland but live quite far south in England. I'm surprised everyone seems to think there's so much difference between Winter in both countries. It's way hotter in summer down here, but not so much difference in Autumn/Winter. Actually the past few days similar temps here as Glasgow, although set to warm up here. We turn ours on 1st Nov, but when we lived in Glasgow we turned it on around the same time. I think the type of house makes more of a difference than location. It's 15.5 in house today, warm enough with warm clothes, but our Glasgow flat was warmer. It depends where you all are in Scotland, of course. In Aberdeen it's probably harder to keep it off for as long.

Ramsbottom · 29/09/2022 21:07

It goes on in the morning for an hour or Two then log burner in the evening, which heats the downstairs nicely and of course heat rises. But of course washing doesn’t dry well

JellyfishandShells · 29/09/2022 21:19

We were holding out yesterday evening , saying it really didn’t rate heating yet( London) but it came on this morning ( thermostat turned right down over summer) for the first time as it was cold early. Didn’t turn it up as the day went on so it didn’t come on again, but DD came over with 2 month old this afternoon so bumped it up to 18C . Feeling toasty atm in coldest room in house .

Radiators around the house have thermostatic controls and it’s a solidly built Victorian terrace which holds onto heat, thankfully.

ThatsRoughBuddy · 29/09/2022 21:19

I’m in Edinburgh and my house hasn’t dropped below 18° so far so no heating on yet.

It is so much warmer in the south of England than it is in most of Scotland… how often do you get snow?
You make a very good point that the house makes a huge difference. Ours is very leaky!

Scianel · 30/09/2022 17:15

Posters who set your house to 20oC, does that mean you are comfortable wearing short sleeves all winter? Have you thought about setting to 18.5 or 19oC and putting a jumper or cardi on?

I've actually tried to turn mine down to 20 to save money - I'd ideally have it at 22/23 to be comfortable. At 20 I'm wearing a thick cardigan and have a blanket over my legs, and my hands are cold.

prettybird · 30/09/2022 17:30

I'm in Glasgow and I'm holding out until tomorrow: as much as anything so that the Smart meter can analyse a complete month with heating and September's gas usage just shows hot water and the hob.

We have 3 foot thick stone walls ( half of a Victorian stone villa) so don't want them to get too cold. Living room has dropped to under 17C in the mornings (the lowest temperature that the Galileo thermometer registers Hmm). I've taken to lighting a load of candles in the evening in place of heating Grin. We have a blocked off beautiful marble fireplace that I really must look into getting a new cast iron grate (and chimney sock) for so that we can light it on occasion and I'm trying to get quotes to replace the large bay window (3 sash windows) with double glazing which will cost us a fortune (over £6.5k Shock) but at least will stop the drafts and cold spots. Tried 2 recommended companies so far but neither have got back in touch to give me a formal quote Hmm I know we won't be able to get it done until January at the earliest Sad

When the heating does go on, it's initially only going to be at 18C and we'll see how we feel. Jumpers and long johns first before upping the thermostat Wink

EDF have us on a DD of £332 ShockShockShock at the moment and in theory that should be going up Shock with the increase in the price cap from October but given that we are massively in credit (over the summer months, "only" using about £135/month) , I'm going to tell them take a running jump Grin
