Bin Strike

Is every local authority striking on the same days? I just saw Edinburgh on the news with overflowing street bins, but our LA seems to start this Wed for a week, and I really hope that my food caddy is emptied tomorrow as usual.

Midlothian will have strikes in a pattern that mean my black bin won’t be picked up for the next 6 weeks! Only found this out today and I have no idea what I could do to mitigate it. Bin is already full as should be picked up on Friday.

LonelyWeegie2022 · 22/08/2022 20:19

Six weeks is a long time! I don't know how we're supposed to "store" rubbish. Looks as though each council is targetting different collections.

My food caddy has been full each week since the heatwave because my fridge-freezer couldn't cope with the heat and much food was spoiled. Fridge temperature went up to 20c overnight, freezer contents partially thawed.

I simply don't have space to keep the bags in the fridge or freezer as they suggest. Hope it's resolved soon.

East Ayrshire says industrial action Wednesday this week until Wednesday next week. We have been told not to put out recycling this week, but to put out household waste bin and they will pick up when resources allow. Ours is only half full so should be able to wait a week or so till they pick up.

Mousemat25 · 23/08/2022 10:04

Domestic waste is bad enough, esp as the tip / recycling centre is also closed due to the strike. Is the street waste just going to accumulate for the next fortnight though? Grim.

traintraveller · 23/08/2022 11:34

Glasgow striking in 2 phases, tomorrow for 1 week and again from 7th to 10th Sept. So I'll only get my garden waste collected, mostly gutted I'm missing the glass collection as the next one won't be until November.

dementedpixie · 23/08/2022 11:38

South lanarkshire is striking later this week and early next week.

North Lan bin people are going to be driving the school buses so they better not strike!

LouScot · 23/08/2022 11:58

@TooExtraImmatureCheddar I'm being dim but can't see the Midlothian info anywhere? I've checked their website and Twitter but no mention yet. So annoying, although at least it's black bin this week for me.

I know someone who works there - that’s where I got the info. Not sure when residents will be notified!

LouScot · 23/08/2022 13:55

Ah thanks for the warning. My food bin will be affected if it's a Monday or Friday strike, yuk!

greywinds · 23/08/2022 18:21

How much longer is the Edinburgh strike running for this stretch? Dog poo piling up and spilling out of every bin, so delightful. I hope they reach a settlement quickly!

MoreProseccoNow · 23/08/2022 22:18

I think it's till the 30th in Edinburgh.

I live in a block of flats & the bins were already full before the strike started.

It looks pretty gross in the city centre.

Having said that, a 2-3% pay "rise" for the most poorly-paid workers is pretty inadequate. I don't blame them for striking.

Invisimamma · 23/08/2022 23:51

It's grim but strikes are supposed to be disrupted. I hope they get the well deserved pay rise they're asking for.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 24/08/2022 12:43

Midlothian info is up on the website and Facebook now. They will not be running extra rounds to pick up the bins they missed, and access to the tip will only be with proof of ID and residency! Bit harsh. Also it says in numerous places in their website info not to contact the council, they won't be able to do anything, so don't bother calling to complain. Put everything in your grey bin (which will be overflowing), including food waste; take dog poo home with you because street bins won't be emptied, and put that in your (overflowing) grey bin too; if you've washed your recycling properly it won't attract vermin...and above all DON'T CONTACT US.

LouScot · 24/08/2022 14:03

Thanks @TooExtraImmatureCheddar I have to admit I put my food waste in my grey bin this morning so it's not rotting away 💩

Mochudubh · 24/08/2022 14:24

Unite, Unison and GMB seem to be striking on different days in different Councils, possibly down to how/when they balloted.

I've been taking my waste to the communal street bins for the last week, they were emptied yesterday but won't be again until the current strike ends.

greywinds · 24/08/2022 17:42

It's grim, the streets of Edinburgh city are starting to reek. I wish it had been resolvable without a strike! Here's hoping there aren't more rounds.

JamMakingWannaBe · 24/08/2022 18:43

What I have noticed from all the media images of overflowing bins is that there is always a big box of cardboard flattened at the side, and plastic bottles poking out the top. One even had a toilet dumped at the side! Another had that blue roll caterers use. That's hardly normal household rubbish.

The normal rubbish bins in Edinburgh are small but even mine would be full if I put a heap of cardboard in there!

JamMakingWannaBe · 24/08/2022 20:18

If it's helpful to anyone, most supermarkets offer in-store collections of soft plastic - so bread bags, crisp packets, bags of frozen veg, bubblewrap etc - all the stuff the Councils don't want for recycling.

We started doing this a couple of months ago and it's made a big difference to what we send for incineration.

Plump82 · 25/08/2022 15:16

I'm North Lanarkshire. Meant to be general waste tomorrow but the strikes start then. I must be in cloud cuckoo land as I didn't realise till I'd taken mine and all my neighbours out. I'll take them back in tomorrow. Apparently they'll be emptied between next Tuesday and the 6th September so what my considerate neighbours will do is just use the glass and cardboard wheelies for their general waste as that's the kind of twats I live near.

dementedpixie · 25/08/2022 15:46

I'm also North Lanarkshire and our collection is normally on a Saturday. Blue bin was due but those drivers are driving the school buses! Brown bin also due but not being collected.

Have to put brown bin out for Tuesday in the hope it is collected sometime before the following Tuesday.

More strike action due next month too

Groovee · 25/08/2022 16:00

I’ve just discovered Royal Mail are striking on various dates too.

The Edinburgh strike ends on Tuesday, so hoping the bins are collected from Wednesday. I go past a number of schools and their bins are full too.

Then school support staff and early years staff in certain areas are striking from the 6th.

tigger1001 · 25/08/2022 16:05

Have heard that the streets in Edinburgh are just a mess.

Not heard about strikes where I am (Fife). But guessing it's only a matter of time

greywinds · 25/08/2022 18:18

They are a filthy reeking mess - all my fingers crossed here for the talks!

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 27/08/2022 22:39

Edinburgh is an absolute disgrace. The streets are reeking; the rubbish is at the point it's so toxic the seagulls aren't interested.

Meanwhile Elsie McSelfie is swanning around appearing at 5 Festival events and flying off to Denmark on an entirely pointless vanity trip (praise be to the Danish P.M who refused to meet her) and saying it's nothing to do with her.

Plump82 · 27/08/2022 22:42

I was in Glasgow on Friday and the place was ab absolute disgrace. I can't even begin to imagine how bad it must be in Edinburgh. And the smell!!!
