Bin Strike

Is every local authority striking on the same days? I just saw Edinburgh on the news with overflowing street bins, but our LA seems to start this Wed for a week, and I really hope that my food caddy is emptied tomorrow as usual.

I've been out in central Edinburgh this evening and for the first time I've seen a rat! The gutters are full of empty cups (so many cups!) and there are bin bags of rubbish piled against the street bins. Not sure if that means householders are now dumping their rubbish next to the street bins? Also, it stinks.

I completely get why they are striking but surely once the strikes are over this is going to be horrendous for the workers to deal with.

I was thinking that the situation is so bad now in some places and the rubbish is spread such a long way. We've still got at least two more days too for the seagulls, foxes, and rats to keep spreading it. Fun times.

I completely get why they're on strike too it's just horrible from a public health point of view.

The seagulls are avoiding it.

Can residents take their rubbish to a local tip/recycling centre? Or are those facilities also striking?

I'm just back from holiday, only found out about the bin strikes today on BBC news app. Both our families are in Scotland but haven't mentioned it to us at all!

SirBarneyPlumsted · 28/08/2022 14:25

Are they on a different pay scale to put her council workers? Am wondering if whatever is agreed as an increase has to apply for all other council workers as well?

Our tip is shut too. North lanarkshire

If Edinburgh is on strike to 30th does this mean it will be uplifted on 31st?

Was reading an article in the Courier earlier - that might depend on where you live. Worth checking your local council website

I'm in Dundee and my bins won't get emptied for 6 weeks and the recycling centres dump cowp are also closed, I think the worst will be the dog poo bins though, someone in our area has been around putting a black bag at every poo bin but it's going to be rancid!

faithtrustandpixiedust · 28/08/2022 14:53

We are West Lothian and strikes started last Wednesday for the next 2 weeks, tips are also closed so I've no idea what we'll do as black bin was due to be emptied Friday so is full.
Sadly there's already an increase in fly tipping around our area and we're not even a week in yet.
I fully support the strikes it's just a shame its had to get this far.

smileandsing · 28/08/2022 14:55

silverclock222 I wouldn't hold your breath! In our area the strikes didn't start until Friday but our bins weren't emptied on bin day earlier in the week. No idea why not and the council website says not to contact them about it.

WeAllHaveWings · 28/08/2022 15:57

Our strike started on Wednesday, but they managed to complete our whole estate on Thursday excluding 5 random streets that were missed, including mine😭They said they will let us know when/if they will be able to come back.

We will be fine with recycling as we still have the old boxes we had before they replaced with trolleys so can use them for most of the extra recycling. We have a pile of cardboard that can flattened and kept in the house for a while as it is clean.

Plan is to double bag any extra and tightly tie up and stick in the shed until they do come back. Considering flushing the dog poo instead of adding to the full bin 🤢

We have cats with litter trays that are emptied daily so this is really going to pile up. We also have an issue with fly tipping and I know that's going to start soon again as it's the neighbour who do it. I'm just hoping they manage to get our street on Tuesday. In the last 5 years I've had to pay over £200 for companies to come and remove rubbish created by neighbours and I'm just not doing that if they start off the back of this strike as it will cost a fortune.
