NHS 5% increase

Interested to hear options on the proposed 5% increase to the agenda for change pay scale. Unison are recommending that it is rejected. Can't see the government offering anything much higher to be honest.

I am undecided as yet. I am personally on quite a good wage for what I do, but the hospital I work in is desperately understaffed. Morale is the lowest I have ever seen it. I am learning towards voting against it, more for my colleagues than for myself.

Totally agree about morale being at its lowest ever. It's sad seeing colleagues a shadow of their former selves at work. Maybe people aren't interested anymore and have given up the fight so to speak. Or maybe everyone is thinking of getting out of NHS sooner rather than later!!

I think people only have the capacity for so much, the staff are wrecked. But it’s not in the governments interests to increase pay properly. Cause if they did the staff would stop doing bank shifts causing even more staffing shortfall.

I don't work in the nhs but another public sector. We are looking at a similar pay rise. However, we are having to start making decisions as to what services we stop offering and whether redundancies will have to be made to pay for it. It's a really tough one as staff deserve more money, but it'll add 900k to our annual salary bill, with no more income from the government to pay for it.

Interesting point that I didn't think of. I'm an AHP and we tend to just run with gaps and a reduced service rather than getting extra people in. Extra money will not prevent staff burn out but it may slightly help retention, or encourage new grads or oversea staff. I'm happy that Unison are fighting on our behalf but can't see the government meeting their demands.

I don't feel like it's enough. However I won't strike and risk patients safety. Our trust sent out an email begging us to take extra shifts and do extra if we can due to rising admissions and covid cases. I'm 6 days this week and 6 next. I no longer do 12 hour shifts and am community based. But I will likely do bank on wards during my 2 week annual leave.

I burnt out last year but have fought back from that.

I've always been against nurses striking but now, for the first time, I might actually consider it. And I think there will be strikes this time.

Has England announced the NHS pay award yet? I see teachers in England have been offered 9%. Be interesting to see what they offer NHS staff, bet it will be significantly less.

Not heard about the pay rise in England yet. It is really tough, I would of course love more than 5% but it's more likely 3%. Not sure I could strike either. I know there has been suggestion of working to rule but, I find if I take my full breaks I won't get all my work done and finish late anyway. It's impossible.

Myself, and most of my colleagues are exhausted and stressed and suffering compassion fatigue. I work on the wards and have never known it so dangerous. We are never fully staffed, if we are staff are taken. We should have 4 nurses and 4 HCA, lucky if we have 3/2. I for one cannot continue at this level. Nearly 25 years in the NHS, I often feel sick on my way in and, I am constantly worried about loosing my pin. My trust has started counting students and supernumerary/newly qualified in numbers.

Patients are so much sicker it is only a matter of time until something awful happens but, no one will listen. I constantly compete incident forms or escalate concerns but, I am told it's the same every where. I have spoken to senior managers about the MH of my staff and the affect of not providing safe and timely care. No one cares. The NHS is broken beyond repair. The Tories must be pleased.

Social carers will have 0% rise. Screwed over as usual. Teachers, NHS, post service, railway workers will all get rises of some degree, lucky them

I’ve voted to accept it. Much as I’d love 10% I just don’t think it’s feasible without pushing taxes up. I also don’t think strikes will benefit anyone, least of all the patients who have been through hell over the last couple of years. and I think the other benefits we get as NHS staff make up for it. That’s just my view though, I know it’s very divisive.

I'm not employed by NHS but dp is. We're pretty happy with the proposed 5% as it's likely my employer will match this. Obviously more would be very nice but it's not realistic.

We're also both not yet at the top of our bands so with increments it's set to be a good increase on our household income.

He is an essential service but not patient facing so hasn't felt the pressure quite as much as others. Both our depts are struggling to recruit and retain staff at the moment.

Hmm I didn't know about this as I'm on maternity leave so out of the loop. I'm usually in a non patient-facing role and feel pretty well paid for it, but can imagine for those at the coal face on the wards it's extremely tough at the moment.

I don't know enough about NHS salaries to comment on.

What I do know is almost everyone, including family and friends, I know who work for the NHS complains, not about their salary but, about other aspects of their job (mostly for valid reasons) and those reasons will not be resolved by a bigger salary increase.

It makes me wonder if any additional funding is better spent elsewhere and taking the pressure off with more resources.

@cakelover75 RCN ballot for industrial strike action will run from 15 Sept to 13 October for all eligible members (those employed on NHS AfC t&c) in England and Wales.
The pay award (not an offer) is £1400 for all NHS pay bands apart from top of 6/7 who'll get 4%.
NHS staff in Scotland have had pay offer of 5% apart from bands 1/2 who've been offered slightly more. Northern Ireland's another story as currently still no executive in place.

With inflation predicted to be 13% by October, the "raise" equates to an 8% wage cut. With energy increases, food increases it's not exactly a great deal, is it?

People who are not on the higher grades probably need it more than I do but I think social care Council staff and civil servants are very left behind and so striking doesn't sit well with me personally this time
