Just looking at areas to locate to and would love to hear some information regarding this area. I'm self employed and one DS aged 6.

It depends on which part of Arbroath you’ll be living in.
As with everywhere, you have your good bits, your bad bits and your wouldifuck live there bits.

Sunnier · 10/04/2022 09:27

Could you let me know which the good bits are please @FelicityPike

What drew you to Arbroath?

I live not that far away, but inland.

Arbroath has a train station and a fair amount of shops going for it, and cliff walks. And the cutest cinema with sofas.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 10/04/2022 09:30

Oh also a mackays jam factory shop

Scottishskifun · 10/04/2022 09:35

Have you considered Montrose instead? Would say there is more things for children including splashback, softplay a fruit farm with fab playground

Sunnier · 10/04/2022 09:37

I can 't remember why Arbroath came up as doing far too much searching.

Looking for:

home for c300k
nice schools
outdoor fun for kids (everywhere i guess)
pref coastal, or at least 20mins away
less rain!!!!

In fact I think Arbroath came up in less rain!

Carnoustie?

womaniswomaniswoman · 10/04/2022 09:43

Broughty Ferry much nicer

dementedma · 10/04/2022 09:45

Friend of mine has just moved there and loves it, if that helps. Agree Broughty Ferry is nice, but more expensive.

Calmdown14 · 10/04/2022 17:23

It's got some really nice bits and some not great bits.

We love it for a day out but with that budget you have plenty of choice in the areas around about it.

Perhaps if you tell us what it is you want in more specific terms people can make recommendations? Angus has a lot to offer. Great playparks, beaches and country parks

Sunnier · 10/04/2022 20:53

I guess the main thing is decent secondary school catchment, otherwise flexible on the rest

I second Montrose.

Calmdown14 · 11/04/2022 13:10

Are you commuting somewhere for work? What size of property do you need for that budget?

You'd get a lot for your budget most places along the coast.

Do you want to be in a town or village setting? Arbroath is cheaper than say broughty ferry so it depends if you need a four bed detached or a two bed in terms of the best areas to recommend.

Lots of nice parts of Dundee too or further up into south Aberdeenshire

JudgeRindersMinder · 11/04/2022 13:10

Depending on what you’re looking for house-wise £300k will just about get you something in Broughty Ferry-a million times better than Arbroath.

haggisaggis · 11/04/2022 13:19

I live 4 miles north of Arbroath. Have been here 12 years. We like it ,but many people on here don't seem to! I think the primary schools within the town are fine - mine went to primary school in the village close to us and we weren't too impressed. Choice of 2 high schools. My dd has dyslexia and support was good. What areas are you looking at?

EdgeOfSeventeenAndThreeQuarter · 11/04/2022 19:16

If you like shagging commandos I’d give it 10 out of 10. Grin

If you want coastal, nice villages north of Montrose - St Cyrus, Johnshaven (nice new development there) or inland Laurencekirk has a train station and you'd get a nice house on your budget. Mearns Academy is a good secondary.
Sounds like you need a tour about the area to see what feels right.
Maybe you want more of a town setting??

Further south Broughty Ferry is great but more expensive.

Carnoustie would probably be a good middle option as you have swimming pool, great play park and easy access to Crombie and Monike country parks. Bit posher overall than Arbroath but only 10 minutes away

Montrose is a beautiful town, and has the most amazing beach. Used to visit regularly years ago when I was visiting a relative growing up, and also in my student days when based at one of the hospitals nearby.

Calmdown14 · 12/04/2022 17:44

You can get the Premier Inns cheap at Broughty Ferry (they call it Dundee east) or monifieth. Basic but handy base for exploring the area.

Same applies to the one at Elgin for the Moray Firth.

Not sure where you are heading up from? If you were staying around Monifieth you could do a decent loop up the A92 even up as far as Stonehaven and then back down the A90 taking in the inland options.

felulageller · 15/04/2022 23:10

The 2 secondary schools are awful and the town's awash with drugs.

Montrose is better. As is anywhere from Carnoustie to Broughty Ferry.
