@ElephantOfRisk

I try with the vit D but you need to take it in the morning or it affects your sleep and I keep forgetting and then don't want to risk it later when I remember.

Dh currently reading a book about the benefits of sunlight to every aspect of your life (in particular heart disease).

Does it affect sleep? I did not know this. I take it at night and often struggle to sleep but had not made the link. I cannot thank you enough for this.
WouldBeGood · 03/01/2022 20:20

DP’s neurologist said that everyone in Scotland should be taking very high strength Vit D daily and I do, as do DP
and DS

Yeah, I don't think it effects everyone in this way, but it can and when I was taking it in the evening I wasn't sleeping well. But then i quite often don't sleep well. However I generally fall asleep pretty quickly and that's what i was having an issue with. You are also meant to take it with a meal and I think fats help absorb it better. I usually don't have breakfast so this also then becomes an issue with me and is again another reason why I forget.

I have the tub sitting right in front of me now but I just don't notice or acknowledge it until evening time.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 03/01/2022 20:35

We all started taking vit D this winter. I kept meaning to but covid spurred me on. We take it with breakfast.

I've thought that covid was a missed opportunity to really do something about obesity too @OldaRailer , but I think @Haudyourwheesht is right around response to any campaigns about weight and health issues. And I say this as someone who needs to lose some.

WouldBeGood · 03/01/2022 20:50

I’m a fat pig but all too aware of the consequences. It’s not fat shaming to raise awareness of the dangers.

What level of vitamin D is recommended?

mapleleavesreturn · 03/01/2022 20:59

With all of these ad campaigns though, I'd rather the focus was on removing barriers than nagging. Poor mental health is a major factor in poor lifestyle choices, and look at trying to get help for that right now.

Tiredoftiers · 03/01/2022 21:17

I just heard an NHS advert talking about anxiety and covid, wondered if they had anything insightful to say. Nope nothing productive, just warning you against drinking alcohol cause it might make you more vulnerable to covid.

Scottishskifun · 03/01/2022 21:57

@Tomorrowisanewday

What level of vitamin D is recommended?
10 micrograms a day for most but actually in Scotland in Winter should really be high dose Vit D
frasersmummy · 03/01/2022 22:04

drinking alcohol makes you more vulnerable to covid ??.. right ok .. are we going back to no alcohol in the pubs ??

Groovee · 03/01/2022 22:19

Apparently taking vitamin D at night can affect the natural melatonin your body produces. So that explains my sleep. Will move to the morning.

My mum reckons the no alcohol thing relates to me as tea total 😂

Next it will be anything made by Baxters or Tunnocks definitely gives you covid.

I got asked by supermarket delivery this evening if we had covid. I had no idea what he was asking and he kept saying what I eventually understood to be "covid"? and I kept saying my surname back to him...had no idea what he was on about Blush

WouldBeGood · 03/01/2022 22:54

I beg to differ on the alcohol thing 🤣

How the fuck have I never had it? But my wee DNs have? Gin

sweetkitty · 04/01/2022 00:03

I’m currently taking 8000mcg (I think) of Vitamin D a day plus injecting myself with Vitamin B12 every 2 days as well as taking loads of other vitamins such as magnesium to help with my fibromyalgia symptoms so there may a grain of truth in it as I’ve never had covid despite being exposed to it many times (but not omicron as far as I know).

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 04/01/2022 00:04

I'm with you. Not as much as a PCR test in my house, but I was surprised not to get a Christmas card from Majestic... Wink

Aye right- where's the science?

Control group and test group and quantity of alcohol involved 🤔
I tell you the Wee Frees would be proud of the anti alcohol stance!

Tiredoftiers · 04/01/2022 08:09

I think what is frustrating me is everything is related back to covid. I’m done, I’ve got covid fatigue. Just stop with the fear messages and send out reassurance. I don’t have any issue with public health messages about excess alcohol, just don’t try to tie it in to increasing risk of covid. There’s a lot more significant harms than catching a virus that fortunately is mild for the majority of people. Encourage good public health messages, with positivity. Let’s get our young people exercising, improve school meals. Not continually tell people they might be infected other people, might have covid and not know it. I can’t even listen to commercial radio any longer.

rookiemere · 04/01/2022 08:25

Please don't encourage the SG to put out more nannying campaigns to control our lives , the dinnae kill your granny or whatever it's called is patronising and offensive enough without giving them ideas.

I can only imagine the sight of JL ( who looks like he may have enjoyed a few too many mince pies over the festive season himself) lecturing us about our weight and the thought of it makes me want to stuff maltesers into my mouth and ears.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 04/01/2022 08:30

Ha, it's a fair point Rookie. ScotGov are pretty terrible at health related campaigns. Today I am railing against the weather - I wanted to go for a big long family walk but have realised that the 'feels like' is -3C so the everyone has turned against the idea!

ssd · 04/01/2022 09:31

I like walking in the cold, its the rain i hate. Am planning a walk on the beach later.

mapleleavesreturn · 04/01/2022 09:32

Yeah those awful adverts - I'm still outraged about the endless bf lecturing whilst pg. whatever they spend on advertising it's too much.

It's fecking freezing in fife - glad to have gotten away though!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 04/01/2022 09:38

I like it too @ssd - we've compromised and agreed to a short local walk instead.

heelforheelandtoefortoe · 04/01/2022 10:13

My dad has an alcohol problem and its been a real struggle to get him to follow restrictions, yet he's not caught covid yet.

So I think alcohol might be some kind of covid deterrent actually!

mibbelucieachwell · 04/01/2022 10:15

Good morning railers. My rail is about what to do for my work as a private musical instrument teacher. I'm due to restart lessons tomorrow. I do a mix of teaching in my home and going to pupils' homes. From past experience of periods of higher numbers of covid cases I know some parents will prefer lessons to be online, which I hate, especially with the wee ones - it's so much more limited and more difficult and it messes up my timetable. I can also offer socially distanced lessons, which is a faff but would hopefully mean we wouldn't be considered close contacts if we're far enough away from each other and masked (uugh). It's so much better sitting/standing beside each other, especially on the particular instrument I teach but it would be exasperating if it resulted in being a close contact, potentially more than once. And I don't want to give my pupils covid either obviously. I know this is small beer compared to many other people who work closely with people but still, uuuuughh.
