Second jabs for teenagers?

doorornottodoor · 29/11/2021 22:20

Sorry to bring Covid into this but I am confused!

I know the UK government have said 12-17 can now have their second jabs. But what is growing on in Scotland? Can I just book them in online? How long does it need to be after the first one?

Thank you. 🙏

My 17 yr old had his second 3 weeks ago (London)

doorornottodoor · 08/12/2021 23:07

I’m Lothian too. Got ours at Gorebridge. Mine last week (booster).16 year old booked next week for second. Good luck!

@vivariumvivariumsvivaria I’d check for local drop in clinics. Took ds for his first one at one last weekend and they were doing teens and boosters: anyone eligible. You and 16 should be able to get jagged at one, don’t know about your younger one.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 09/12/2021 12:36

Thanks, Would - I think I will do that. I'm waiting on the phone to ask the line, again. It's good that they are busy, but I cannot get through between work calls!

WouldBeGood · 09/12/2021 13:10

The website gives details of drop in centres too. Hope you get sorted

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 13/12/2021 13:54

We did get sorted, long queue at Ingliston, and quite a bit of confusion as everyone seemed to know something different about boosters/vulnerable/

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 13/12/2021 13:56

I'm now phone queuing to cancel my booster. Been listening to the tinkly tinkly music for an hour - who's got the time to do that? There will be a lot of wasted appointments.

The whole thing is just dire. I'm glad we are jagged, but pretty despondent about the next couple of months.

WouldBeGood · 13/12/2021 17:32

Glad you got done @vivariumvivariumsvivaria!

doorornottodoor · 13/12/2021 18:00

@vivariumvivariumsvivaria you can cancel it online. I’ve done pretty much all our appointments that way.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 14/12/2021 13:46

Aye, but you need the dates of your previous jags, which are carefully noted in an envelope which I have "filed" somewhere...

Turned out the appointment had been automatically cancelled, which is not what the nurse said, she asked me to cancel it to free it up for someone else.

However, the helpful woman was able to give me the dates for the previous jags, so now I can use online for next inevitable round of boosters

15 mins to go til we hear whether Santa can come this year...

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 14/12/2021 13:47

Me too, would. I do feel for the staff at the centres, everyone is stressed and unhappy and they are working flat out.

Very glad we are antibodied up, or will be soon. I'm not an anxious person but I do feel different now we are jagged!

Just an update on this to say my 13yo got their 2nd jab at Ingliston yesterday as a drop-in - no problem at all and all very easy, waited maybe 15 min max.

rookiemere · 16/12/2021 10:59

@tiokiko how many weeks since their first injection and did you have any written or online proof for that ?

tiokiko · 16/12/2021 11:16

Exactly 12 weeks - no proof, they just looked up details on system from DOB/postcode and all fine.

NHS Inform now says between 8-12w and the leaflet given out post-fab states 8w between 1st and 2nd so sure they would do 2nd from 8w now.

rookiemere · 16/12/2021 11:21

Thanks @tiokiko that's very helpful.
Rather doubtful our Feb French ski trip will take place so I'll not rush just now for it, but good to know.

Oldraver · 16/12/2021 11:35

My DC is 16 shortly after Christmas so tried to book his second for sometime after that

The system was having non of it

That's interesting as I've been trying to get clarity about my 12 year old's second vaccine and getting nowhere. I got my Booster yesterday and asked while I was there whether i could bring DS along and was told yes, but when I got home DH pointed out that NHS Lothian's website now says that they are not doing second doses for 12-15 year olds. What a farce.
tiokiko · 16/12/2021 12:17

@TeenTraumaTrials there is no official info on the NHS website but they are definitely doing 2nd vaccines - I asked when I was there for my booster and they said yes straight away, then absolutely no problem when we went back later. Other friends have since done the same so if you're keen I would just go along with your DS and I'm sure there won't be an issue.

Thanks tiokiko - we'll give it a go - nothing to lose!

Itawapuddytat · 24/12/2021 19:32

DS (13) got a letter today with the details of the appointment for his second jag in January. He's a happy boy and so are we! Smile

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 24/12/2021 19:50

Oh that's interesting @Itawapuddytat - DS went on the very first day 12-15's could go so hopefully his letter is on the way. Anything in the letter to suggest they can do a drop in or change appointment times on the app?

Itawapuddytat · 24/12/2021 20:57

DS went during the first week too (at a drop-in clinic, his appointment letter actually came about a few days later in the post Smile ), so hopefully your DS's letter is on the way too. I checked the letter, they say that if we need to cancel or change the date we need to call the Vaccination Helpline (the 0800 number), the app is not mentioned. They don't mention any drop-in clinics either, just the appointment's date, time and the vaccination centre (we are in East Ren).

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 24/12/2021 21:50

Thanks @Itawapuddytat fingers crossed. DS is desperate to have his second.

Perihelion · 28/12/2021 16:50

tiokiko thank you, I've just been to Ingliston with the 15 year old. I didn't even ask, just said she was there for her second dose. 13 weeks past the first one and jagged without any bother.
Was the quietest I've seen it, no queue or wait.

Gottasinggottadance · 02/01/2022 16:44

Has anyone been to EICC for 12 - 15s second vaccine?

I tried to book dc's vaccine online but it said they are not currently part of the group to be vaccinated (despite Scot govt advice!) and NHS Lothian website still has out of date info saying 12 - 15s aren't getting second vaccine. So I was thinking of taking dc to a drop in, but don't want to be turned away....
