Parking in Edinburgh

Thinking of taking the DC to Edinburgh for a couple of nights between Christmas & NY. Will likely stay in a Premier Inn or similar as not in the hotel very much.

Loads of choice with accommodation but parking is an issue as obviously very ££££. We used to live in Edinburgh in the early 2000's so fairly familiar with the city and wondered if there was another cheaper option, something like park in Leith or similar, leave the car, taxi to the hotel and then taxi back a couple of days later. Any recommendations or ideas?

There is a large carpark towards the airport and then take tram into the city centre.

Changethetoner · 11/09/2021 21:16

Check if parking is included with the hotel. They might have spaces for guests to use.

TokyoSushi · 11/09/2021 21:18

Oh brill, you don't know what its called or what I could google search @LIZS do you?

Thanks @Changethetoner it seems its just 'chargeable local parking' which is a fortune!

Park and ride. There are 3 big ones now. Buses to town are fast and frequent and way cheaper than parking in town.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 11/09/2021 21:20

the tram park&ride at Ingliston is a day stop only...iirc they have signs up to say cars will be towed if left overnight

i guess you could use the airport parking, (purple parking??) get the free bus to the airport, tram in/out to city centre, but the tram fare to include the airport is around a tenner vs about a fiver from Ingliston which is the next stop from the airport.

The purple parking is pretty reasonable if booked in advance though

Are there no hotels with free parking?

Notthisnotthat · 11/09/2021 21:20

We stayed at the Edinburgh Park premier inn recently, they have lots of car parking that's free if you are staying. It's a new ish hotel so clean, spacious and decent WiFi. We used the tram to get into town as the station is just across the road.

We also stayed at the Lauriston Place premier inn and they have a deal with a car park in Tollcross but even then it was about £15/£20 per 24 hours to stay.

I think you can park at the park and ride at Ingliston I'm sure my dd parked there when she stayed overnight in city centre .

Toomuchis · 11/09/2021 21:24

Park and ride is the way to go. There's moves in the workings to try to introduce charging on the bits of Central Edinburgh that don't currently have restrictions.

MissM2912 · 11/09/2021 21:25

Free to park at Ravelston/ Murrayfield. Park there and taxi in.

Bloodypunkrockers · 11/09/2021 21:27

I thought the P&R a ingliston was daytime only. So no overnights

feellikeanalien · 11/09/2021 21:27

Could you get the train to Edinburgh from where you live OP? DD and I went to Edinburgh from Northumberland for the weekend and left the car at the station car park.

I normally prefer driving but this was a lot less stressful

SirChenjins · 11/09/2021 21:28

The park and ride at Herriot Watt (Hermiston) is 24 hours - you can park there for up to 3 nights.

Bloodypunkrockers · 11/09/2021 21:28

We stayed at holiday inn next to the zoo and didn't pay for parking

OllyBJolly · 11/09/2021 21:29

As a PP said, Ingliston P&R doesn’t allow overnight parking.

I’d recommend the Edinburgh Park Premier Inn or the Edinburgh Park Novotel (which has a pool). Free parking and easy tram ride into town .

LIZS · 11/09/2021 21:32

I was thinking of Ingliston but am sure there is another that way that does permit overnight.

tnetenba · 11/09/2021 21:34

I've just been to Edinburgh for a few days and booked a space through 'your parking space' online. Paid £16 for parking on Clifton Terrace (10 min-ish walk from our hotel on Queen Street) to park from 10am Monday to 10am Wednesday. It was another hotels car park.

The one at Herriot Watt - Hermiston
Mrsjayy · 11/09/2021 21:39

Ah you can't park over night at p&r.

ProseccoThyme · 11/09/2021 21:49

Metering ends at Blackhall, so you could park in a side street (not the retail park) or Murrayfield - both of which are well-served for quick, easy transport to city centre. These are safe areas for leaving your car.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 11/09/2021 21:52

ooooh, we stayed at the Holiday Inn at the zoo when the children were small! Woke up to the whooping of monkeys!

ChocolateDeficitDisorder · 11/09/2021 21:54

Head over the bridge to Ferrytoll P&R in Inverkeithing or Halbeath P&R just outside Dunfermline. No overnight restrictions and quick bus trip back into Edinburgh.

liveforsummer · 11/09/2021 21:56

Stay in the newhaven premier inn - there are busses to town outside the door and other routes by the harbour and free parking in the car park. It's a great spot and usually significantly cheaper than the city centre options

SirChenjins · 11/09/2021 21:59

You can at Hermiston Smile www.edinburgh.gov.uk/directory-record/1114131/hermiston-park-and-ride
