Moving to Dundee - where to live?

My family & I are relocating from London, I have a job at Ninewells so we’re looking around Dundee / surrounding areas. Can anyone suggest which villages are worth looking at? We’re planning to rent initially until we’re settled and looking at places both in the city and more rural locations but having never actually visited the area (we have family in Glasgow but not local to Dundee) we have no idea of where will be nice to live.
It will be me, my husband & our two year old. I’m planning to put him in the nursery at Ninewells currently but will be considering nursery’s close to home too.
Thanks to anyone who can offer any help!

I don’t know dundee that well regarding areas to live, but a lot of people live in north east Fife and commute into Dundee. Wormit and Newport are very popular and just 10-15 minutes drive to nine wells. St. Andrews is lovely (but expensive). Cupar is a nice sized market town and on the main east coast train line which makes it easy to travel to Edinburgh/down south.

MaryGubbins · 07/09/2021 19:20

Agree, not Dundee. If pushed broughty ferry.

If selling a London house at Andrew’s might be affordable and my first choice.

Sounds like you might be medical? Do you have to be within certain distance for on call.

Groovee · 07/09/2021 20:08

My friend moved to Monfieth many years ago and really loves it.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 07/09/2021 21:53

Can you contact HR or your new line manager and ask them to circulate an email round your colleagues, to ask for suggestions? Explain your circumstances just as you have here and see what happens.

I used to do this for new staff ahead of their arrival, even just to help them find somewhere to rent initially.

Notthisnotthat · 07/09/2021 21:56

The Garse of Gowrie has some lovely villages, most have primary schools but secondary will be a bus ride away. Angus has some lovely places to stay too.

It's a beautiful area to stay in.

franklyshankly2 · 07/09/2021 21:58

I would say invergowrie or the the west end of Dundee (blackness road etc)

franklyshankly2 · 07/09/2021 21:59

I was eyeing this up the other day

Very lovely and close to ninewells

grafittiartist · 07/09/2021 22:00

Lovely part of the world!

Piffpaffpoff · 07/09/2021 22:01

A friend has just bought in St Andrews after repeated attempts and prices there are mental at the moment.

I’d second Tayport/Wormit - have another friend there and she loves it, lovely community feel (and some great views from some of the houses).

Psychonabike · 07/09/2021 22:02

Invergowrie, Longforgan, Knapp, Carse of Gowrie areas are all fabulous toward to east.
Broughty Ferry is coastal and to the west.
Just over the water is Newport.
So many great places around Dundee that involve minimal commuting.

St Andrews, Angus, Monifieth etc all have a bit more of a commute.

You have a lot of choice!

Brenna24 · 07/09/2021 22:06

You are going to be spoiled for choice, especially after being used to London prices. Tayport/Newport/Wormit are gorgeous, anywhere on the road in to Perth, birkhill and muirhead, monikie, carnoustie and there is Broughty Ferry top (it was a Victorian beach resort and is now practically joined to Dundee but still keeps its character).

babydungarees · 08/09/2021 07:20

This is a good idea, thank you! Ideally we’ll be no more than half an hours drive away. We’re coming up to look around the area next week, thank you all for your suggestions!

Very lovely and close to ninewells

This is such a lovely house, I reckon it’ll be snapped up before we move though sadly.

A commute from one end of Dundee to the other is rarely more than 20 minutes! As pp say- there’s so many lovely villages around Dundee but I would not discredit Dundee itself.

I am born and bred Dundee and love it here.

FlorenceNightshade · 08/09/2021 07:38

Don’t believe the commute time from St Andrews, Newport, Wormit etc is only 15 minutes! With traffic on the bridge at peak times and traffic going up riverside to ninewells it can feel a lot longer!! Also when the bridge is shut you have to get home via perth which is not welcome after a long shift!

Lots of Ninewells staff live in a wee estate that’s practically on grounds called Clayhills. Perth road area is also close and popular as is glamis road area.

Out with Invergowrie, Birkhill, Muirhead, Liff, Fowlis and Dykes of Grey are probably closest with the shortest commute.
If you contact someplace like the TSPC and say you’re going to be working at Ninewells they’ll sort you out I’m sure! It’s practically a category on its own

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 08/09/2021 11:10

Newport, Wormit, Tayport, all lovely. Broughty Ferry - you'll still be no more than 20 minutes getting to Ninewells.

Invergowrie is nice, as are Longforgan and Inchture.

Even if you choose Dundee itself, there are plenty of nice areas. Blackness, around the Perth Road, for example.

No idea of your budget of course, but compared to London this is probably fairly inexpensive Grin

Beautiful part of the country to move to op! My Dsis used to live in Dundee, you are spoiled for choice. Definitely stick with staying outside the city as it's so quick and easy to get into town when you need to. St Andrews is nice if you can afford it.

Calmdown14 · 08/09/2021 13:44

Broughty ferry is nice as is carnoustie.
Dundee and Angus are great for kids. Camper down park is amazing and all the Angus coastal towns have great play and splash parks.
If you go for the coastal area North then you also have Monike and Crombie country parks which are also lovely

JudgeRindersMinder · 08/09/2021 15:24

Broughty Ferry is beautiful, it’s part of Dundee and still manages to retain its village feel to a degree. 3 excellent primary schools and a decent secondary.

Yes I’m Ferry born and bred, how can you tell Grin
Oh, and I’ll be putting an amazing family home on the market within the next few weeks!

JudgeRindersMinder · 08/09/2021 15:32

This thread’s a good one about the Ferry
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/scotsnet/a4322984-living-in-broughty-ferry

It’s grown a lot over the last 20 years, but the more central pat of the Ferry has lots of beautiful older houses

naturealwayswins · 08/09/2021 22:28

I wouldn’t say Carnoustie. It’s not worth the extra drive.
Broughty Ferry is great though 20 minutes drive to Ninewells is optimistic especially at busy times.
Agree that there are plenty of staff living in the West End of Dundee too.

IM0GEN · 11/09/2021 17:55

Ideally I’d advise to rent in the west end of Dundee for 6 months anyway and use the time to explore the area. However there’s not much available as the students have just gone back to uni. So you might have to take what you can get.

babydungarees · 07/11/2021 22:08

Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply, apologies for the delay! We found a place in Monifieth, really looking forward to moving and getting settled now. My parents will be moving up in spring, they’re looking at Broughty ferry but also places a bit further out like Abroath / Forfar / Alyth / Wormit & Tayport. Any areas people would give a wide berth? They need somewhere with decent amenities and ideally friendly locals so they can settle in, make some friends and feel like part of the community. TIA.

OP posts:
Fleur405 · 08/11/2021 07:04

I find Arbroath to be a bit run down these days and wouldn’t be my top choice. Carnoustie is nicer in my opinion. Broughty Ferry is lovely.

WouldBeGood · 08/11/2021 09:08

Forfar and the surrounds are nice, with lovely countryside on the doorstep. Kirriemuir is quite a bustling wee place. It’s really quick from Forfar to Dundee too.
