Moving to Dundee - where to live?

My family & I are relocating from London, I have a job at Ninewells so we’re looking around Dundee / surrounding areas. Can anyone suggest which villages are worth looking at? We’re planning to rent initially until we’re settled and looking at places both in the city and more rural locations but having never actually visited the area (we have family in Glasgow but not local to Dundee) we have no idea of where will be nice to live.
It will be me, my husband & our two year old. I’m planning to put him in the nursery at Ninewells currently but will be considering nursery’s close to home too.
Thanks to anyone who can offer any help!

Bit of a distance but Edzell is lovely, and a great place for primary aged kids. Newish school, very safe, low class numbers

Glad you've found somewhere OP. Monifieth is a good choice.

For your parents, Broughty Ferry would be ideal unless they are looking for somewhere very quiet. There was a thread not long ago about it and all the amenities it has. It's quite a bustling place with enough shops to browse if they want, lots of cafes and a few really good restaurants, and of course the beach. Doctors, dentists, everything they might need. And a good choice of housing.

I would avoid Arbroath. If they want somewhere really small, Newport and Wormit are very nice.

Meant to add, I never see the appeal of Carnoustie myself, though I haven't lived there.

I like Broughty Ferry too, and ideal as one ages.

Wormit, Newport, Tayport, all very nice. Newport has a few nice cafes, a lovely restaurant and an art gallery. They are much smaller and quieter than the Ferry if that's what they're looking for.

I wouldn't go as far as Alyth or Forfar, but then I'd always choose living next to the water versus inland.

West end of Dundee. No commute. Lovely area with great views of the river. Handy for the road and rail network. Great schools. Can cycle to city centre. Great dance classes (look up salsa Dundee). Why waste time and money commuting when there's no need?

Notospaday · 12/11/2021 09:51

OP has found a house. She’s now asking on behalf of her parents so schools presumably don’t apply.

In any case I would dispute the claim of great schools in the West End, at least at secondary level.

I like Forfar because, unlike Eg Tayport (where I also lived and I loved it) it has all the amenities so you're not always travelling to dundee.
It has large supermarkets, a big hardware shop, buses to take you around town, a large leisure centre, nice loch to walk around, bargain shops, curling even if you want a hobby!

I can easily go three weeks without going to Dundee.
It saves fuel and travel time.

It's also quite friendly and while there are folk who have been here for generations everyone is also welcoming of new people.

It's the sort of place where if you drop your phone or bank card, someone will get it back to you the same day.

I love the views of the hills and being close to nice beaches like Lunan Bay.

The property prices also seem pretty stable because new houses keep being built, so you get a lot for your money.

@Fleur405

I find Arbroath to be a bit run down these days and wouldn’t be my top choice. Carnoustie is nicer in my opinion. Broughty Ferry is lovely.
I feel the same about Arbroath, and yes I know there are drug issues everywhere, but very obvious in Arbroath.

Broughty Ferry all the way for people in/nearing retirement

Bit late to the party! But yes to broughty ferry for your parents. Lots of nice places to eat and wee shops

Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply, apologies for the delay! We found a place in Monifieth, really looking forward to moving and getting settled now. My parents will be moving up in spring, they’re looking at Broughty ferry but also places a bit further out like Abroath / Forfar / Alyth / Wormit & Tayport. Any areas people would give a wide berth? They need somewhere with decent amenities and ideally friendly locals so they can settle in, make some friends and feel like part of the community. TIA.

Hi OP if you are still around. Came across your post while researching moving to Fife/Dundee areas - any advice welcome :) How did it work out for you. Today I'mlooking at Cupar, Broughty Ferry, Wormit and Newport :)

GelatoQueen · 27/09/2022 10:40

Broughty ferry as on train line and lots of local amenities / things to do.
I've also got a soft spot for Newport and Wormit but not so much there
