Where could I get a small flat for about 100k?

So I’m getting divorced. About to start an online degree that will take the next four years, possibly more.

Once all the financials are sorted out I would have enough money to buy a small flat at around £100k and have enough money to support myself through the degree. Budget for a flat would be about £100k-£120k.

STBXH has also said he’ll help out while I am studying but I don’t want to rely on that.

Would kind of also like a fresh start somewhere.

Any idea of what kind of place you like? Big city, small village? Coast or countryside?

KintsugiCat · 01/09/2021 16:21

I prefer coastal to countryside. I’d like to be within reach of a city or decent sized town (say within an hour in a decent train/bus link).

I don’t think I can afford Edinburgh or Glasgow. Aberdeen is my hometown and that’s an option but I feel somewhere new might be better.

What about Newburgh?

This is a small cottage, there are a few usually for sale about the £100,000 mark.

Stirling? Then handy for Glasgow or Edinburgh as well when it comes time to look for jobs.

ElephantOfRisk · 01/09/2021 16:37

I'm sure there is a tool on right move which you can put in your options and it tells you where there are properties you can afford?

Bloodypunkrockers · 01/09/2021 16:42

You could get something relatively decent in Perth and surrounding areas

Kinglassielassie · 01/09/2021 16:45

Lots in a 5-mile search round Glenrothes. Quality of area and flat is variable, of course...

This looks interesting in Dysart for £95 K:

Dunbar is great!

KintsugiCat · 01/09/2021 16:58

Thanks this is confirming some places that had crossed my mind- Stirling, Perth and Fife. Pretty much for the reasons mentioned, plus my dad grew up in Perth.

In reality I realise I’m looking for recommendations really as to where are good places to live in that kind of price range.

There is probably a wee bit of flex depending on how we structure the split on house/pension equity. STBXH is a high earner so he’s not worried about his mortgage payments as long as he’s got a decent deposit.

@trulyconfuseddotcom I’d kind of assumed I’d be priced out of East Lothian. Current location is Edinburgh so it would be handy and I do like the coast.

Dunbar! There's not much in the price bracket just now, but usually a few flats around £119-£125k!

museumum · 01/09/2021 17:09

Pretty sure you’d get lots of choice in the Falkirk area for that - with great links to both edinburgh and glasgow.
Other parts of Midlothian too - I’d look on the borders railway route, or out towards East Lothian on the train line (longniddry, cockenzie etc)

ACloseMatch · 01/09/2021 17:11

There is a lovely little house in Invergowrie for about that. Short bus into Dundee, stunning views up the river, and not far from Perth either. Trains to Aberdeen or Edinburgh nearby in Dundee.

trulyconfuseddotcom · 01/09/2021 17:31

@KintsugiCat There's not a huge amount on at the mo but 1-beds in your price range do still come up occasionally! It's a fab wee town and v handy for Edinburgh too.

GintyMcGinty · 01/09/2021 17:33

If you avoid Glasgow Edinburgh and Aberdeen then you could get a flat for that price in many parts of Scotland

That looks nice

Plus news that there will be more stops on the railway line at invergowrie station soon

Haudyourwheesht · 01/09/2021 22:08

You could get a flat for that in Glasgow. Lots of cottage flats for under 100k.

CallMeNutribullet · 01/09/2021 22:16

You'll get a flat for 100k most places in Scotland op, definitely Glasgow

SukonthaM · 01/09/2021 22:18

Would you risk buying a flat in a completely random area without living there first?

Calmdown14 · 01/09/2021 22:31

Montrose or the surrounding villages. Coastal but you have the train and easy access north and south.

KintsugiCat · 01/09/2021 22:31

@SukonthaM I am on a timescale of a couple of years here. I would have to visit, then rent before buying.

So this is basically starting the discussion for places to start looking into more. So first of some online research, then talking to people.

Then narrow down to a handful of places to visit. Then possibly one or places for a short term let.

I’ve lived in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and and Moray. So there may be satellite places to the cities that I’m not aware of, but which would work as a base, so I’m not totally clueless about the general area.

@museumum I would also recommend Falkirk. I was recently looking all across the central belt in Scotland and went to visit. It is well served by two train stations, High and Grahamston (I actually arrived into Grahamston on a direct train from London which was continuing on further north!). The High station runs the high speed Edinburgh to Glasgow line. The town centre is very nice and the locals are friendly. Lots of nice cafes and small town shops etc but also has about 4 supermarkets, cinema, b and q all within walking distance of the centre.
There is the Calendar estate and park if you like walks and the canal. It’s not on the coast if that’s a deal breaker but you could get to the coast fairly quickly.

RubyJam · 01/09/2021 22:44

Ayrshire- still excellent travel links to glasgow , lots of coastal towns to choose from

Sturmundcalm · 02/09/2021 11:42

Edinburgh has definitely driven up prices more on the east coast IME, so if you wanted coastal then if you looked west of Glasgow you would get much more for your money - whether north side in Dunbartonshire/Helensburgh or south side in Renfrewshire/Inverclyde.

You'd definitely get something in Falkirk for that money but I like to live by the coast and I felt really land-locked when I lived there!

SheWoreYellow · 02/09/2021 11:47

We know a lot of people moving to North Berwick. Is that near enough a city?
There’s this for example
