Where could I get a small flat for about 100k?

So I’m getting divorced. About to start an online degree that will take the next four years, possibly more.

Once all the financials are sorted out I would have enough money to buy a small flat at around £100k and have enough money to support myself through the degree. Budget for a flat would be about £100k-£120k.

STBXH has also said he’ll help out while I am studying but I don’t want to rely on that.

Would kind of also like a fresh start somewhere.

Largs! Rail service to Glasgow, sea and hills, lovely cafes and restaurants, fish and chips, ice-cream, …

It’s my happy place. Smile

@SheWoreYellow North Berwick considerably pricier than Dunbar, more like Edinburgh prices. Hence why your £100k only gets you 50% of a flat there! Lovely town though.

Hadenoughcrap2 · 02/09/2021 12:21

It has sea views and is a 2 bed on at £120K

[quote Hadenoughcrap2]Largs has several properties from 85K upwards, inc this:

I second this. Largs or nearby or across the water, Helensburgh.

Good luck Smile

Oh yeah! I missed that it was 50% ownership.
I’ve found it’s generally cheaper than Edinburgh though, hence including it. Smile

Nothing on just now, but I have seen a few things come on in that bracket in Haddington.

IM0GEN · 03/09/2021 18:40

I know you are not asking about this but I’m going to stick my big beak in anyway. If you are a student divorcing a high earning spouse then make sure you’ve had very good legal advice. High earners are very good at hiding assessment such as pensions.

Re flats , what they all said it true. You can get a one bed flat for £120k or under in most parts of Scotland except the most popular parts of Glasgow and Edinburgh and some expensive posher towns.

So I’d start off working out where you want to live and go from there.

Why do you want to do an online degree BTW? Why not in person ( hopefully unis will be back to normal by then ! ). Full time online sounds a bit isolating, especially if you live alone.

KintsugiCat · 03/09/2021 20:56

@IM0GEN

You’re right, I’m not asking about that. Thank you for your concern though.

I’m doing an online degree because I have lung damage from a childhood illness.

If you want value for money but near the coast then north Aberdeenshire might suit, e.g. Ellon, Peterhead, Fraserburgh or further up the coast to Cullen, Buckie etc. Huntly and Banchory area is well priced too.

listentomydeclaration · 04/09/2021 16:43

West Dunbartonshire

I bought a good sized tenement for 110k in the Scotstoun area of Glasgow last year. Also plenty of affordable properties in Knighstwood nearby last time I looked.

You may prefer another part of the country though!

The islands

leavesthataregreen · 04/09/2021 17:14

Largs? You can buy 1 bed flats from around £45k and there's even a 3 bed house on for £105. It's just over an hour by train into Glasgow or 45 mins drive. Gorgeous area - lively seaside town with cafes, pubs, restaurants and shops, pretty coastal walks and boat trips to islands.

The islands
Gawd, not any more! The absolute shiteholes that are selling for big bucks in the island are staggering.
PrivateParty · 04/09/2021 22:49

Inverclyde?

MoppaSprings · 05/09/2021 08:13

Gourock has good train links to glasgow.

IM0GEN · 05/09/2021 15:07

If there’s any chance that you might want to change to F2 F study in a few years then you might want to stay within commenting distance of a suitable college / university.

KintsugiCat · 05/09/2021 17:13

@IM0GEN There isn’t.

How about Troon OP? It's a naice town on the Ayreshire coast and has a beautiful beach. And there's a direct train to Glasgow.

Or West Kilbride? Again on the west coast and with a direct train line to Glasgow:
