Totally confused - DS tested positive for Covid

Covids · 23/08/2021 22:06

Can’t think straight and can’t understand the NHS site.

DS 17 (S6) tested positive via LFT tonight. He did a LFT this morning and nothing came up on the test stick - no lines at all. He thought it was a dud and didn’t have time to do a 2nd test as he was running late and his Dad said take another one tonight.

He came home from school with another headache (had one yesterday too apparently) and it’s positive.

I’m currently in England and am due home tomorrow - I left Scotland early Saturday morning. So we’re having phone calls galore and am getting advice from people down here but I’m sure rules are different (have been living in a relatively mask-less, embrace-everyone world for past 3 days but that’s another story)

DS has ordered up PCR tests via NHS and I think we’ll get 4 for the household? I don’t know if it’s quicker to do a drop-in clinic but then surely you can’t go if you’ve got symptoms? My DP says he’s feeling a bit rough... I’m OK so far DD is too.

DP and I are double vaccinated. We have no more lateral flows in the house. I’m travelling by train back up to Scotland tomorrow.

Does anyone know what the isolation rules are now - I’m totally confused and a little bit frazzled. And poor DS has been helping chaperone and guide new S1 pupils at his school - did he pick it up off them? Or has he passed it on to any of them? They’ve been wearing masks but maybe they’re not that effective?

you are now a close contact and have to self isolate until you have a PCR back. if it's +ve you self isolate for 10 days, if negative that overrides the lateral flow. clearly you have to get home to self isolate. you'll get the PCR result back quicker from a walk in or drive in place than from a postal one.

pianolessons1 · 23/08/2021 22:08

no sorry, ignore me, I'd forgotten that the rules have changed. You're double vaccinated so you don't have to isolate at all. he needs a PCR to confirm or refute his +ve status.

Onemorefortheroad · 23/08/2021 22:10

You still need a negative PCR in Scotland to avoid having to isolate, as long as you have been double jabbed for 2 weeks.

pasadeda · 23/08/2021 22:15

Regardless of rules it would be highly unreasonable of you to travel by train tomorrow

Lougle · 23/08/2021 22:16

www.nhsinform.scot/illnesses-and-conditions/infections-and-poisoning/coronavirus-covid-19/test-and-protect/coronavirus-covid-19-guidance-for-households-with-possible-coronavirus-infection

This Scottish guidance says that if you're fully vaccinated, you don't have to isolate if all of the following are true:

~fully vaccinated
~negative PCR test
~no symptoms

So you need to get a PCR test for you and go from there.

Undersnatch · 23/08/2021 22:20

I think regardless of any rules, ethically you need to get a pcr test and result where you are before you are before you potentially go and infect loads of people on a train.

For Ds and family at home, the can go for a drive in/walk in test tomorrow morning and hopefully have results by bedtime.

latissimusdorsi · 23/08/2021 22:21

All household contacts must isolate until you get pcr test results. You should be able to get one tomorrow wherever you are
If negative then double jabbed (+ 2 weeks ) adults do not need to isolate
Under 18s also do not need to self isolate if negative pcr

Covids · 23/08/2021 22:25

Well I’ve just been to a funeral today where no one was wearing masks. Totally different vibe down here which I’ve found uncomfortable about but kind of got swept along with it. I can’t stay down here - I’m staying with a relative - she’s double vaccinated.

Fuck the more I think about it the more disastrous it’s becoming - and I hope my DS is going to be OK... sorry I’m going to be told to go to the Covid board next arent I?

Shit.

Same in our house this week.
Son tested positive. He had to isolate.
None of us had to isolate (double jabbed), but had to take daily tests.
Have to say I felt uncomfortable with doing any outings just for fun- only went out for shopping/ essentials.

latissimusdorsi · 23/08/2021 22:34

What a nightmare, timing couldn't be worse @Covids Thanks

Whereas I think I would do the same, I don’t think you “Have” to do daily tests? In England pcr is advised if vaccinated but not actually mandated.
Frazzled2207 · 23/08/2021 22:38

OP this is unfortunate but if you have been down south for 3 days there’s a good chance you missed ds’ most infectious period.
I would try and get a pcr where you are and if negative def just get the train home. Not sure if positive but I think you still need to get home.

grafittiartist · 23/08/2021 22:38

Ah Frazzled- I could be wrong!
We had loads of tests in the house anyway- so have tidied those up nicely!

Pleasegivemeyourwisdom · 23/08/2021 22:43

Nightmare Sad

But her DS had symptoms on Sunday

Def a good use of them. I would have done same. But not a requirement.
balernobetty · 23/08/2021 22:53

My DC was classed as a close contact. had their Pcr test at 4pm and we got the results by 10am next day.
We're in Scotland too so as soon as they had their negative PCR they were back at school

dcilovett · 23/08/2021 22:56

We are exactly the same, in Scotland, DS (18) lateral flow test positive with symptoms today. Rest of us no symptoms and lateral flow tests were negative. We all have to isolate unless we get negative PCR tests. So all of us went for PCR tests ( you're allowed to leave home for testing even with symptoms).
Assuming DS will be positive and really hoping the rest of us negative so the younger two can get back to school.
DS will be hiding in his bedroom for next 10 days I guess.

giggly · 23/08/2021 23:06

I’m well confusedConfused my dd has symptoms but a -be lateral flow but booked her a PCR as the LF are rubbish. I’m sure NHS in form said as of Friday last week that you didn’t have to isolate if you have been in contact unless you to are showing symptoms. Also we would
Only have been offers a PVR if dd had a +PCR which thankfully she didn’t. As a side note my NHS trust has informed that staff must self isolate if in close contact with a +
Honestly my heeds birling.

heymammy · 23/08/2021 23:12

These new rules are bonkers! I had a negative PCR result on 30 June (as a close contact of a pos case but no symptoms) and a positive one on 01 July (literally woke up next day with sore throat and tickly cough).

If I had been following the new rules I would have been free to go about my business after getting neg result on 30th and yet I was brewing the virus and likely infectious!

I know it's all about weighing up the odds and getting back to normal, which I am happy about btw, but I dont think dismissing the isolation completely is the way forward just yet.

Sorry about your predicament op, if you have been in contact with your ds in the 48hrs before he developed symptoms then you need to book a pcr where you are. Fingers crossed.

Covids · 23/08/2021 23:13

I bloody went through the process of getting a PCR on the NHS site (not Scotland) - gave my current English postcode where I am to get nearest test site - located it - slots available. Then it asked for my home address and it bloody defaulted to nearest test centre in Scotland grrrrr.

I’m going to do a lateral flow tomorrow - if negative I’ll get on train masked up. My son had headache on Sunday and I was last with him early Sat morning.

Onemorefortheroad · 23/08/2021 23:30

What awful timing for you. Are there no walk in test centres where you are?

My partner tested neg on 3 lateral flows on Monday/Tuesday. PCR on Tuesday was positive so I'd be loathe to trust a lateral
Flow before you start travelling across UK Confused

Covids · 23/08/2021 23:53

Right I lied and said I live in England and am registered with Dr at this English address and it meant I could book a local drive-through tomorrow morning. What a fucking stupidly confusing unjoined-up system.

Hope it’s negative and I can get back home. Otherwise I’m going to have to contact a shed-load of people tomorrow to inform them - I had people hugging me but we weren’t allowed to sing at the funeral. It’s a crazy world and I’m kicking myself because I let my guard down after being so bloody obedient for such a long time in Scotland.

What a fucking stupidly confusing unjoined-up system.

Non-Covid related but I had to attend a walk in centre when I was on holiday in Devon (infected insect bite). I was treated as a "foreigner" because my G postcode wasn't recognised on their system, they couldn't find my GP on their database, and I didn't have my CHI number with me, but the nurse said that wouldn't work on their systems either.

I know healthcare is devolved in Scotland. But come on.

PotteringAlong · 24/08/2021 08:54

So his dad sent him to school after he had had a positive LFT and didn’t send him for a PCR test?! That’s the worst bit of the whole thing! What was he running late for?! He should have been at home isolating!!
