Living in Broughty Ferry.

I'm asking on behalf of my Mother who is considering moving there. Does anyone have any experience of the place? Any thoughts or advice would be helpful. She's also heard good things about Wormit but unlike Broughty Ferry, she hasn't been there in person yet.

TIA

I don’t know how to explain Broughty Ferry even though I grew up there. Yes, way back in the days of the Dundee Jute Barons it was considered very grand but those days have long since gone and now it’s just another part of Dundee.

CaraMingle · 14/08/2021 19:29

Thanks, Tealwarrior. We were there recently and it still looks nice, with a pretty good high street, at least by her town's standards but of course living there is a different experience. She has a friend who used to live there who loved it but that was ten years ago and so much can change in that time.

Still relatively quiet and sedate, still has the 'village' feeling that it always had, but it's not quite as detached from the rest of Dundee as it once was, or at least, it doesn't feel as detached.

Still as close as you'll get to feeling like a village community anywhere 'in' Dundee though, and I don't find it anywhere near as cold or snooty as Monifieth and so on.

LowlytheWorm · 14/08/2021 19:43

It’s lovely. I’d love to live there as an older person. Handy for Dundee but as a PPsaid it has the smaller village feel to it and lovely walks and views.

Tealwarrior · 14/08/2021 19:48

Cara, you’re correct. It does have a nice High Street and I still enjoy a wander when I’m back in Dundee. In fact it was only after I replied earlier on that I realized I still do quite a bit of shopping in the Ferry - anything from school shoes for my grandchildren to handbags for me and white pudding and pies for the rest of the family that I then cart thousands of miles away to where I now live.

doscervesas · 15/08/2021 09:11

It's really nice. To me, and the people I know who live there, it still feels separate with its own identity. My friends rarely go into Dundee at all.

There's good shopping, and it's bustling enough to sustain a fair selection of shops, lots of cafes, walks along the beach.

Bloodypunkrockers · 15/08/2021 12:41

It's nice. Close to Dundee city centre if needed but still retains its identity

Lovely shops and beach.

Rolly123 · 15/08/2021 21:32

I lived in Broughty Ferry about 9 years ago and I absolutely loved it. Such a friendly place! I really enjoy going back to visit.

Wormit is lovely too, but no where near as much going on. Beautiful views and houses though! I'd chose Broughty Ferry for the Main Street and cafesSmile

IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 16/08/2021 15:07

It's lovely, lots of independent shops, bars, cafes, etc right on your doorstep. Wormit is pretty but it has one Spar and one restaurant. So I guess it depends on her preferences.

CaraMingle · 16/08/2021 19:21

Thank you all so much.

It's good to hear positive things about The Ferry. Wormit does look lovely but Broughty sounds more suitable. She isn't yet elderly but she doesn't want to move again and having so many shops on her doorstep make it much more liveable, particularly if she has difficulty getting around when she's older and she really enjoys going to cafes and restaurants.

We may look into other areas on the East Coast but Broughty seems to tick so many boxes.

Are there any largish supermarkets in Broughty or would those be in Dundee?

DowntonCrabby · 16/08/2021 19:24

We don’t live there but visit a lot.

My impressions are that it’s very retirement friendly, VERY touristy in the summer but generally a lovely place to live.

ElephantOfRisk · 16/08/2021 19:57

There might be bigger supermarkets that would deliver a main shop/the heavy stuff leaving her to be able to use locals for smaller/fresh stuff?

Just pick a local postcode in the area and try it in the supermarkets to see?

Tealwarrior · 16/08/2021 20:05

There’s a big supermarket beside the public swimming baths on the road leading out to the Ferry. There also supermarkets at the Ferry end of the Kingsway. Shopping wouldn’t be a problem

doscervesas · 16/08/2021 20:26

Does she drive? There's Sainsbury's outside the Ferry, or Tesco in the centre of Monifieth which is on the bus route from the Ferry.

As suggested though, deliveries for bulk shopping and local shops for the rest would be ideal.
The centre of the Ferry has M&S food and a Tesco Express as well as good independent bakers, butchers etc.

I'm surprised it's being referred to here as a village. It's bigger than a village! Lots of facilities such as two doctors' surgeries, dentist etc as well as dress shops, a good shoe shop, art, a bookshop and loads of eating places. I honestly think she'd love it.

ElephantOfRisk · 16/08/2021 20:32

My DM wasn't much for the technology when she was alive and i didn't live nearby so I'd order her an online delivery from my own account and I treat student DS to one from time to time as well. I get him a variety of different ones. he likes an iceland one to stock up on greggs sausage rolls and frozen mash, your mum might have more refined shopping habits Grin

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 16/08/2021 20:40

Another one chortling at the idea of Broughty Ferry being a village, it's crept into Dundee and Monfieth and the vast majority of houses actually belong to East Balgillo but no one ever says they live there, it's always "The Ferry"

It does have a nice high street though, a few independent type stores, although I will say I haven't been for a proper poke about for ages.

It's busier than Carnoustie, smarter than Arbroath, more desirable than Dundee.
If we are talking snooty I'd say that Broughty Ferry was well up there tbh.

doscervesas · 16/08/2021 20:49

Relatively affluent, certainly. I don't think it's snooty though!

Happy36 · 16/08/2021 21:00

My friends' parents live in Broughty Ferry; they're 70 now but relocated there from London 20 years ago. They love it. I've visited them a few times and find it stunningly beautiful. Their Victorian house facing the water is Alain gorgeous.

grafittiartist · 16/08/2021 21:05

Used to live near the ferry.
I would move back any day!!

CaraMingle · 16/08/2021 21:08

Thank you all so much.

I saw some small supermarkets while there and she does drive but she may stop driving in the next 5-10 years so having some larger supermarkets nearby would be ideal but it sounds like she's covered. I'll check local delivery areas just in case.

Agree with all the above but wanted to mention it's also served by it's own wee train station too.

There are lovely local independent shops like Clementines Grocery and a few cracking pubs/restaurants.

It's flat for walking.

Wormit is gorgeous, right on the water with views across to Dundee. It has a Spar, lovely hairdressers and one restaurant although it within walking distance of Newport on Tay which has more. Manna and Kitschnbake cafes are both excellent and a Scotmid and Spar. It isn't as well served by public transport as BF but isn't as busy either.

Houses in both places are flying off the market within days/weeks of being posted up for sale.

Both are truly lovely spots. Good luck to her on her move.

doscervesas · 16/08/2021 21:23

That's a good point about the Ferry being flat. And even if she gets aches and pains later on there's an osteopath, massage therapy, podiatrist, everything.

I should move there myself!

grafittiartist · 16/08/2021 22:13

I remember it always being sunny!
And the river proper blue.
Awe.

Heatherington · 16/08/2021 22:30

The Ferry has the benefit of looking at beautiful Fife. In Wormit your view is Dundee. 😐

IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 16/08/2021 22:33

One downside, parking is an absolute nightmare. I regularly drive round in circles for ten minutes trying to find somewhere close to park. In summer it's close to impossible if you're on any street near the main shopping/park/beach area.
