Family eating out in Glasgow on a budget

Breathmiller · 12/07/2021 14:49

After a really helpful thread about eating out in Dundee I thought I'd ask for help about us going to Glasgow for a last minute couple of days as a family.

Dh (meat eater/lactose intolerant) me, vegan and gluten free and ds 10 and 17 who eat anything.

After a great buffet style Indian restaurant in Dundee it would probably be a good idea to find something similar as that usually has things for all of us. Not against a chippy in the park either one night if it's nice enough weather. Noodles or thai or chinese also go down well.
Nothing to flash or expensive.

We will get breakfast in the hotel and probably just buy lunch from a shop as we mooch about.

Any particular restaurants anyone can recommend? We'll be staying at the Holiday Inn and will probably go to Kelvingrove musem, Transport Museum and the Botanics as well as just wander about. Any other cheap or free things to do? To be honest the youngest is just happy to be going to a city and staying in a hotel.

No real suggestions but loads of options near Kelvingrove, eg Byers Road, Finnieston etc. Groupon usually has lots of offers for Glasgow so you should find something to suit. 👍

One restaurant you could try is Amarone, Nelson Mandela Place, really central near the underground and Queen Street Station. Went with friends and all diets catered for, including vegan and gluten-free. Really nice place and great staff and they have a kids' menu.

I’d recommend Banana Leaf on Byres road, midway between botanics and Kelvingrove. Malaysian food with a Gluten and Dairy Free menu too.

As a Glaswegian who lived in the West End for 37 years, I'm ashamed I spelled Byers Road wrong.

Just a side note-although tickets for Kelvingrove etc are still free you have to book them in advance to get in. We were there this morning and it was so quiet, it was wonderful! You really got a chance to see things-even with 3 kids! (Also the cafe inside Kelvingrove is closed.)

Dumpling Monkey on Dunbarton Road is good value

WeeM · 12/07/2021 15:25

As others have said, finnieston area is excellent. I’d recommend trying Dockyard Social-it’s a big warehouse type building with lots of street food vendors inside as well as a bar. You book a ticket but it’s redeemable against a drink I think. Really nice laidback vibe and not expensive.

Dockyard social is a great idea! Also if the weather looks good, the Cranside Kitchen could work too
Breathmiller · 12/07/2021 15:47

Oh these are all great, thank you. The Malaysian place sounds good. And we all love the idea of the street food place.

Good call about kelvingrove having to be booked. I presume the transport musem and ship might be the same.

Thanks.

If you like burger style food Bread meets Bread is good. It’s been a while since I have been but they were always good for gluten free and vegan options.

Breathmiller · 12/07/2021 15:51

Aw man. The dockyard social looks ace. But only at the weekend. We are going tomorrow til Thursday. Might go another time though cos it looks great.

These vegan burgers look amazing. Just need to find out what's gf. As long as the burger is actually gf I'm happy to be bumless.

Aw no that’s a shame! Brel in Ashton Lane is lovely- fab beer garden area if weather is nice. Tantrum doughnuts is amazing (not sure about VG/Lactose though) but worth a pop in for a takeaway doughnut-they’re awesome. Yeah
Breathmiller · 12/07/2021 16:29

If someone ever makes me a vegan gluten free doughnut in life I would love them forever. Grin

@Breathmiller highly recommend Dakhin in the Merchant City area if you fancy an Indian. It’s entirely Gluten Free (even all the breads 👏🏼) And has loads of delicious vegan options! They’re great with allergies etc!

Almostascot · 12/07/2021 17:11

Definitely check about Bread meats Bread because it has been a couple of years since I’ve been but then they did amazing gf buns and all their meat patties were gf. Not sure about the vegan ones though.

I second Dakhin is amazing. Also Topolabamba is really good for Mexican street food and most of the menu is gluten free.

Breathmiller · 12/07/2021 17:50

Thanks everyone.
So far we are booked into Kelvingrove, The Transport Museum. And we got an Italian deal on itison booked for when we arrive tomorrow.

We are looking at either curry or the bread meats bread place on Wednesday.

Thanks everyone. This has been so helpful

Not food related but People's Palace is worth a visit. You can go for a walk/play in the park at Glasgow Green too.

Yellow85 · 12/07/2021 18:38

If your going for a curry then mother India or Babirs are top choices!

Breathmiller · 12/07/2021 18:51

The vegan burgers look amazing at bread meats bread but just saw an online review saying none of them are gluten free. Just for anyone else reading who are interested .

The 5pm site is great for food deals in Glasgow.
