funeral notice in shop window (Scotland)

DMIL passed away recently and I asked the funeral director about putting a notice in the local post office window, and the woman looked at me like I had two heads. I thought this was always done? Is this a just something niche to north Scotland? I thought it was quite normal, and actually think it's a good way of letting the more elderly villagers know (as they maybe don't use social media so much). The death notice will go in the local paper too, but this is just a A5 notice that goes in the local shop window.

I've googled it and have come up with nothing, no images or anything, but I'm sure it's a thing. Anyone else remember this? and has it completely died out with social media (no pun intended)?

Sorry for your loss. I'm also in Scotland, and have never seen or heard of this being done. Always just death notices in the paper.

Marianicka · 11/07/2021 20:30

I've only ever seen this where the shop was the deceased's business / place of work

(I'm in the south though)

Scotland here - definitely more a Highlands and Islands thing, but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it in smaller villages in the central belt too. Definitely a village thing.

TheCanyon · 11/07/2021 20:34

My next door neighbour is a funeral director (his family business), all death notices get posted up at the local wee high street grocer shop and local weekly paper unless the family request not too. The other funeral directors in town, a small chain, they only post them in their windows.

Snappyteabread · 11/07/2021 20:35

I've seen this West Coast Scotland. Can't think if it's just been in newsagents or in other shops too.

TheCanyon · 11/07/2021 20:35

sorry, should have said this is in the borders

Cubeagsnog · 11/07/2021 20:35

Shops in our town do this, but we're fairly north in Scotland. Didn't realise it wasn't a thing elsewhere.

Lidlfix · 11/07/2021 20:35

Stirling (but a suburb) and it is very much a normality here and in the surrounding villages.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 11/07/2021 20:35

I'm in N Scotland and have never seen this.

Local paper, yes, local shop window, nope.

Ohdeariedear · 11/07/2021 20:35

Just seen this is in Scotsnet so no need for the Scotland here at the start of my prev post…🤦‍♀️

CaraMellow · 11/07/2021 20:36

I've never known anyone to do that.

MatLeave · 11/07/2021 20:37

It still happens here in my part of Ayrshire.

unkindnessofravens · 11/07/2021 20:41

Central belt village here, used to be very common, but not so much these days. Social media probably playing a part in phasing it out

Amortentia · 11/07/2021 20:43

I'm in Glasgow and it was fairly common until the 90s. Some newsagents used to have a display of notices on little cards in the window, quite like the ones the old job centres used to use. They would display all sorts of notices, deaths, lost pets, things for sale.

AlphabetAerobics · 11/07/2021 20:44

Totally normal in the far north.

tiredmama2020 · 11/07/2021 20:46

Ayrshire here 🙋🏻‍♀️ Local paper and funeral directors window is all I’ve ever seen!! Can’t say I’ve ever seen a death notice in a random shop window 🤔 I had no idea that was a thing!

KindChick · 11/07/2021 20:46

Yes absolutely happens in my town in the Highlands.

RJnomore1 · 11/07/2021 20:47

Done thing in south west Scotland. One place it was the local butchers had them!

Q1w2e3 · 11/07/2021 20:48

Definitely happens in my North East village. Sorry for your loss.

MrsAmaretto · 11/07/2021 20:49

Shetland - absolutely gets done here and also for my relative in a “highland” Stirlingshire village. In both places it’s the funeral director who organises it.

Viviennemary · 11/07/2021 20:49

I've never heard of this happening anywhere.

jammydodgersplease · 11/07/2021 20:50

Still doing it in the south west- I have also seen it in Edinburgh a couple of times in the last 10 years but don't remember where.

Witchinwardrobe · 11/07/2021 20:55

Normal in Peebles (window of local newsagent)
Did this for both parents, most recently December 2020
Must have read for my mum for 20 years

GoodbyeToCare · 11/07/2021 20:57

Totally normal here in deepest, darkest Argyll.
