@Happytentoes

I get that it’s good to pronounce Alba and Barcelona correctly as that’s respectful to the language from which they originate, so why is it ok to pronounce the English word ‘film’ as ‘filum’? I get that we have accents, dialects etc, I just don’t get why we get so sniffy about it. ( native Doric spikker here)
Well they’re place names and film isn’t - which does make a difference just in itself.

Also, I have an extra vowel in film (and lots of other words) it’s not a deliberate decision, that’s just how they come out.

I’m not being told a word in a different language and then going... nah, I prefer to mispronounce it.

@SoMuchForSummerLove

Ok, well it's not happening where we live. Glad for you if that's what you wanted for your children.
Whereabouts are you? There's at least one Gaelic unit in every local authority in Scotland, which transport is provided to for primary school children.
SoMuchForSummerLove · 07/05/2021 16:12

Actually you've just prompted me to Google it. There is a Gaelic Language Plan, which seeks to 'eliminate discrimination by ensuring that anyone who wishes to learn the language is supported to do so'.

Not sure what the take up would be, I've genuinely never heard anyone mention a desire to learn it. This is for Fife, by the way.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 07/05/2021 16:14

Although Fife doesn't appear on this list!

Man, I'm down a rabbit hole now Grin

fungussingstheblues · 07/05/2021 16:27

Apologies, I did think there was at least one in every single LA, but it appears not. Sorry for the fake news. You do have the right to ask:
www.fife.gov.uk/kb/docs/articles/education2/schools-in-fife/gaelic-medium-education

but obviously these things can take a long time to set up.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 07/05/2021 16:28

That's ok, it's been interesting to learn about it Smile

It was amazing how popular the Gaelic school in Edinburgh became when it was announced as a feeder primary for James Gillespies despite being in Leith. What a coincidence Wink

None in Dumfries and Galloway as far as I can see - biggest region in Scotland I think.

AnnieHooo · 08/05/2021 10:46

Quincie Slainte bha for the 90001 and here's 90002, Tapadh leat.

If the campaign for the recognition of Scots to be the official language of the people of Scotland is successful then there will be millions of native fluent Scots speakers.

@Helspopje

Because that’s how you say it
Just this. It's how Alba is pronounced.
