hospitality today - confused!

I haven't been listening to the briefings for ages so confused about what we can actually do today.

I know places like Costa and cafes are opening as have seen local places facebooking and tweeting about it. Until 8pm I think, and the same pre-Christmas rules about limited numbers. Fine.

I also know that you can only have alcohol outside. Also clear, although I'm not sure on times and it doesn't really affect me.

What about restaurants? Licensed premises? Can I go with DH this week and have lunch inside with a glass of wine? Or take the kids out for an evening meal to somewhere which is licensed?

No drinking inside, same as before. Alcohol only outside in beer gardens etc

RaspberryCoulis · 26/04/2021 07:57

Yes but does that mean that places which are licensed are open indoors or not?

Can I go to my local bistro and have a meal inside with soft drinks, or do they have to close?

I think there's indoor dining until 8pm but food only, no alcohol. From 2 households

WouldBeGood · 26/04/2021 08:02

Places that are licensed can open indoors, but NO ALCOHOL inside in case you get steaming and lick the waiting staff or other customers.

Also in case you have fun. Absolutely forbidden in Scotland.

See also: Inside eating til eight. Outside til ten. Then away home and up early for salty porridge and another day of no fun.

FelicityPike · 26/04/2021 08:02

No alcohol served inside at all, even with meals.
Meal outside & you can have alcohol.

angelopal · 26/04/2021 08:03

All restraunts, cafes etc can open inside but cannot sell alcohol even if they are licensed. You can only have alcohol outside so beer garden etc.

Good job lots of folk don’t need alcohol to have fun then Hmm
brokengate · 26/04/2021 08:03

Meal inside alcohol outside.

Was discussing this with DH last night.

Our local pub has lots of indoor nooks and crannies to eat. Or a garden. I understand no alcohol inside, but think it's odd with food. If I ate a steak pie and drink coke, how's that different to wine. I understand I have to go outside as soon as food finished, and that alcohol lowers inhibitions etc. But one drink seems odd.

RaspberryCoulis · 26/04/2021 08:06

Ah right. I wasn't sure if they were allowed to open at all, or had to stay closed.

Agree it's all a pile of nonsense, DH and I having a glass of wine with lunch is zero risk. In fact, it would be just one of us having a drink given that the driving limit is so low.

Will the outdoor smoking areas now turn into drinking areas? 😀 people will head out for a quick pint, then back in for the rest of their dinner? 🙄

Icannever · 26/04/2021 09:16

I am looking forward to pubs opening properly again so all the people who are currently drinking on and littering the beaches and parks will go back to drinking in pubs 😀

WaxOnFeckOff · 26/04/2021 09:38

I rarely drink, but as an adult in my 50s I fucking resent that I'm "not allowed" to have a glass of wine or whatever with a meal. There is no justification and no evidence for it other than Nicola wanting to exert more control than necessary over people. It's ridiculous.

RaspberryCoulis · 26/04/2021 09:48

Exactly @WaxOnFeckOff. I'm a woman in my late 40s and I'm being told I'm not allowed to have a glass of wine with a meal?

It's horrendous.

OP I'm in England but have also been avoiding the briefings as I find them so irritating and depressing. I've been using the gov website to keep uptodate with the rules. Current rules in Scotland here: https://www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-protection-levels/pages/protection-level-3/

Advice seems sound on this thread before I upset anyone! But I've seen too many threads about the rules in England with incorrect information, best to refer to the actual rules, not what some MNers think they are or should be.

Where is the scientific basis behind these restrictions

RaspberryCoulis · 26/04/2021 14:08

There is none. None of the restrictions are based in science.

I think alcohol inside due to be allowed 3 weeks today. But yes you can go out for a meal without alcohol inside from today.

You are also allowed to get pissed at home and go to a restaurant to have lunch there but you can't drink inside. You'll be drunk already so will be licking the waiting staff but it doesn't count as you haven't had the drink in the restaurant.

Ooh! Excellent plan! Better choose my restaurant carefully... 😃
RedactedTaeFeck · 26/04/2021 15:00

Friend of a friend was saying they all took little flasks and bottles of spirits to the pub the last time and ordered soft drinks and a blind eye was turned to them adding their own alcohol. It's not really about that for us, we'd like to enjoy and nice, perfectly chilled and poured pint/class of draft beer or cider with a meal. I understand there is a two hour limit from something on the tv earlier. DH and DS might even manage two pints with a meal in that time, it's not like we are likely to forget ourselves over that really.

The short answer is that we can't be trusted.

WouldBeGood · 26/04/2021 15:08

Yeah, @RedactedTaeFeck I often don’t drink on a lunch out, but it’s the being treated as a naughty child that’s so frustrating.

And absolutely no evidence for it. Sigh.
