What's Coatbridge like?

Squicknick · 15/04/2021 20:56

Not from UK but moving to Scotland for work. We have seen a house near Coatbridge we might be interested in, and just trying to get an idea of what the area is like. We're coming from a fairly big city so it would be a change. I've read some fairly damning reports of Coatbridge but I'm aware that all towns have their good and bad areas. Can anyone advise me, please?

Don’t do it. Sorry but just don’t.

WeAllHaveWings · 15/04/2021 22:00

Trying looking at the SIMD map when scouting out areas, it might give you an additional insight into areas you are looking in.

My quite proper sister in law bought a little house near the time capsule to live in while retraining at Glasgow uni and thought it was fine. Ended up moving to new houses in Airdrie and still seems happy enough.

Merename · 15/04/2021 22:27

Where are you going to be working? What do you want from where you live? You can probably get bang for your buck in Coatbridge but sacrifice amenities and other things.

Shaggervalley · 15/04/2021 22:39

It's fine . Good bits and bad bits . Has a great train service into Glasgow as well .

Invisimamma · 16/04/2021 20:42

It would be a no from me!

Redtartanshoes · 16/04/2021 20:56

What’s your budget? Will you be working close by?

Squicknick · 16/04/2021 21:56

Thanks for replies. Will be working in Glasgow so also looking closer to the city but not knowing the area at all is tricky. I have looked at the SIMD map, thanks PP, interesting!

Are there any areas around Glasgow that anyone would recommend for a family with school age children. We really want somewhere with a great community with lots in walking distance, where you don't need to drive all the time to get around. Thanks again.

You most definitely don't want Coatbridge then.

What's your budget?

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 16/04/2021 22:09

Lots of nice areas around Glasgow, the North West is close to Loch Lomond and lots of lovely walking.
Would be helpful to have a price range and the advice will be more specific.

And it's a no from me for Coatbridge.

I0NA · 16/04/2021 22:10

We need a bit more information to help you. Because obviously families with school aged children live all over Glasgow.

Where are you working and how will you commute ?
What are your thoughts on schools ?
House size / type required and budget?
City, suburbs or countryside ?
Do you mean you don’t like to drive or that you can’t / don’t have a car?

Roonerspismed · 16/04/2021 22:13

Bishopbriggs? Torrance?

I wouldn’t go for Coatbridge

Merename · 16/04/2021 22:34

And are you planning to come up and view things? The market around Glasgow is wild at the moment with things going fast and at 20% over value. When do you plan to move? It’s not a buyers market at the moment.

forfucksakenett · 16/04/2021 23:57

I quite like Coatbridge. You get a lot for your money and I find the people really friendly. Close to Glasgow and I hear that St Patrick's day is brilliant.

RaspberryCoulis · 17/04/2021 09:03

Places near Glasgow covers a LOT of ground.

You're going to have to give a bit more detail. Where will you be working? What's your budget? If you have £100k to spend on a property then the recommendations are going to be different than if you have £700k.

leeds2glasgow · 17/04/2021 09:06

I work in Glasgow and just bought a house in prestwick. Easy commute and perfect for the kids! Plenty of good schools, clubs and it's by the beach.

Ladylunchalot · 17/04/2021 10:17

Coatbridge isn't that bad, plenty of green space and parks in and around the area. Great transport links to Glasgow and Edinburgh and not far from the m74 to go south.
I live about 6 miles away from there and like all towns it has good and bad areas. Plenty of leisure facilities and clubs for all ages. You also get a lot of house for your money.

miliie55 · 17/04/2021 10:26

Rough 😆 na it's not that bad just like anywhere it has gd bits and bad bits. I wouldn't consider it a nice area though in general.

What about Hamilton or East Kilbride? East Kilbride is really big, lots of parks and lots to see and do.

BigPlanes · 17/04/2021 10:55

Last time I visited Coatbridge we nipped to a McDonalds and there was a bouncer on the door... on a Sunday at 5pm.. Shock

RaspberryCoulis · 17/04/2021 11:10

339 secondary schools in Scotland.

Coatbridge High School ranked 238th. It's not in the worst 100 (just) but it's far from the area you'd have at the top of your list if you're looking for great state schools.

Fullofthejoysofspring · 17/04/2021 11:15

Coatbridge does have some nice bits but like pretty much anywhere, it's also got awful bits. Have a look at Uddingston and Cambuslang.

forfucksakenett · 17/04/2021 11:35

@RaspberryCoulis at st Andrew's and st Ambrose are there as well remember.

avidavocado · 17/04/2021 11:46

With good sense of community in Glasgow, I would go for the Southside. peoplemakeglasgow.com/neighbourhoods/south

Shawlands, Strathbungo, Battlefield, Langside.

Increasingly 'naice' areas, but not as expensive as the West End and IMO better community spirit. Lots to do locally, and also minutes away from city centre by train.

Shawlands Academy serves a very diverse population, ethnically and socioeconomically, and I have heard good things about it.

Trappedonanisland · 17/04/2021 20:28

Most of Glasgow's schools are ropey except those in the expensive areas and they are oversubscribed . Nothing wrong with Coatbridge ,Hamilton or EK . Depends on the area . Southside and Eastend of Glasgow -more for your cash.

Rolly123 · 17/04/2021 20:38

Renfrewshire is lovely and very close to Glasgow. Very handy for the airport too!
