Prince Edward saves the Union

Apparently Prince Edward is moving to Scotland as part of a bid to save the union. I'm not 100% on what he'll do when he's here or why this would affect any of us ordinary plebs but I'm sure they have a plan. So if Prince Edward moves to Scotland will that be it for independence?

Well if you believe any of The Crown, lots of the royals have been very unhappy at Gordonstoun, Charles in particular. Sophie is from a non-aristo background and I got the impression both the children were in day schools rather than boarding.

I read something (so could be true or not) that Louise had no idea that "granny" was the queen until she found out at school, something like there was a picture of the queen and her going "that's not the queen, that's my granny" or something.

I'm ambivalent about the Royal family tbh but he's not the worst and I know it's not true regardless.

I think Gordonstoun is a very sporty school. Suits a specific personality type. Anne sent her kids there and from what I understand they loved it.

Gove and Gordon Brown must be pals (newspaper article below).

MICHAEL Gove’s Union Unit is hiring new senior staff – but knowledge of Scotland is merely “desirable”, the job advert reveals.

The Cabinet Office cell, tasked with preventing the break up of the UK, has been branded “clueless” after the eyebrow-raising stipulation was spotted in the job description for four “heads of role” posts in the department.

Set up in response to growing support for Scottish independence, the Cabinet Office Union Unit is chaired by Gove and is working in conjunction with another anti-independence group in Number 10.

It’s new job advert describes the unit as “a high-profile team at the very heart of Government” which aims to maintain “the integrity of the United Kingdom”. The roles are available in London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.

The listing, posted on ziprecruiter.co.uk, adds: “The Union Directorate is a small, focused team of policy professionals, analysts, comms experts and external secondees with a focus on making the benefits of the Union clear, visible and understood.

“The Union Directorate is responsible for the overall Union strategy, as well as driving delivery across Whitehall and beyond.”

The ad then lists the responsibilities expected to be undertaken by successful candidates, including demonstrating “good political judgment, curiosity and independence of thought”.

At the bottom of that section, the ad states: “Desirable: have understanding of policy issues relevant to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.”

That line is symptomatic of arrogance on Downing Street, according to the SNP.

Depute leader Keith Brown said the Union Unit is “clueless” and was “doomed to fail”.

He added: "It reeks of Westminster arrogance that the Tories are willing to hire a senior staff member who lacks a basic understanding of ‘issues relevant to Scotland’.

"The taxpayer shouldn't be paying through the nose for this Tory flag waving exercise.

"Decisions about Scotland should be taken in Scotland – not Whitehall."

The Cabinet Office has been approached for comment.

Last month, Gove’s anti-independence cell came under fire after it emerged the Tory minister had been comparing notes with Gordon Brown on how to save the Union.

And just last week, Boris Johnson’s pro-Union committee was thrown into chaos after its only Scottish member was sacked.

Luke Graham, the former MP for Ochil and South Perthshire from 2017 to 2019, was relieved of his duties after a “brutal” row upon the Prime Minister’s return from Scotland.

Sophie seems like a solid nice lady who doesn't chase the limelight, but it's funny how she was caught on camera dissing the Queen and trying to arrange access to the royals for cash and to arrange dodgy endorsement deals, and the Queen told the press to leave her alone and downplay the story, and it basically just vanished and barely anyone even remembers.

The recent revelations about the Queen and Charles are so eye-opening, it's scary the amount of power the have over the government and the press.

From my days of flicking through Hello at the hairdressers I understand Sophie and the Queen are rather close. I don’t think she’d move away

Ps clearly fake news. As much as they don’t bother me I can’t see something like that going down well here

PinkyParrot · 12/02/2021 07:18

Well Andrew's already here isn't he - in some remote croft in Galloway

PinkyParrot · 12/02/2021 13:16

That's an unsubstantiated rumour btw

No one told the press to leave her alone, and she had a horrible time of it for years. But you're right, people have forgotten about it. They decided that it was incompatible for a working senior Royal to have a spouse in certain types of business (such as PR) and so Sophie needed either to change professional sphere or turn to full time Royal duties. She chose the latter, and just went about it without fuss and fanfare.

And now, 20 years on and with a solid and unexceptional record and a growing reputation as a safe pair of hands, it's all forgotten

rosetylersbiggun · 12/02/2021 16:02

The Queen literally sent out a press statement to newspaper editors "rebuking" them for the coverage and basically telling them to leave Sophie alone. You can still read the official Buckingham Palace press release online.

The Queen and other senior royals have tremendous power and influence over the press.

MissEliza · 12/02/2021 19:26

I think Sophie did a lot of grovelling and apologising. It didn't just get swept under the carpet. I believe she wrote letters of apology to those involved.
