Where will they 'take back' the extra days off school?

We were due back to school on the 6th, but obviously term isn't starting until the 11th (for pupils at least).

I assume they'll need to 'add on' these few days to the school timetable somewhere before the summer? Does anyone have any inside knowledge as to when that might be?

I'm hoping to book a short (UK) break either at Easter or the start of summer holidays, just for something to count down for. Obviously I know it might not happen, but need something to clutch to.

No idea but annoyingly we have two rescheduled holidays one starting on first day of school holidays and one coming back weekend before they start again Confused.

AreyouthereGoditsme · 31/12/2020 17:25

Teachers are still working so these days won't be added on to the school year.

applesandpears33 · 31/12/2020 17:26

Does that mean we may not have in service days later in the year? That would be good as they are always tricky to find childcare for.

WoWsers16 · 31/12/2020 17:28

They won't be added on anywhere - normal
Holiday dates will remain the same. Teachers and staff are still working throughout x

bookishtartlet · 31/12/2020 17:36

I don't think they will add them back on to be honest. Teachers have been told to provide online learning, therefore technically the pupils are only losing a couple of days.

RoseMartha · 31/12/2020 17:37

As far as i am aware online learning will be in place as schools will still be open for key workers kids and vulnerable pupils

bookishtartlet · 31/12/2020 17:37

Also, just book the holidays. More worthwhile than the last week of term, and there's really no comeback from any LA about parental holidays like in England.

DollyMixtureLulus · 31/12/2020 17:38

I agree, just book! Hope you get to go OP.

singsingbluesilver · 31/12/2020 17:41

They will not add on any additional days - that would require a huge change to teachers pay and conditions. Teachers are working even if the schools are closed to pupils.

ChristmasinJune · 31/12/2020 17:47

They're not holidays they're technically "online learning" days so they won't be paid back.

DumplingsAndStew · 31/12/2020 17:49

They're not "online learning" days though, as that doesn't start til the 11th Confused

I thought there was some sort of rule that pupils needed to have x number of days/hours of learning a year?

OP posts:
DumplingsAndStew · 31/12/2020 17:53

I'd be happy not to get those 'days back' by the way if that is easier for them to keep right with teachers hours etc as I absolutely understand and respect that teachers are still working (they should be paid extra imo as they've worked bloody more than just these few days!) I just honestly thought there was some sort of legislation that meant kids had to have x number of days in school (or online in these times) a school year. We had changes to our end of winter and summer terms this academic year already as they went back a day later than scheduled for the summer term.

I think the pandemic trumps that rule

DollyMixtureLulus · 31/12/2020 18:07

Teachers have to be paid for 195 (usually 190 + 5 inservice) days and as we’re still working we’d all have to be paid for the 2/3 ‘extra’ days.

Callisto1 · 31/12/2020 18:17

I just had a look at the Edinburgh council term dates and it says we finish 2nd July. This is new No? I thought it was June 25th or am I imagining things?

RaspberryCoulis · 31/12/2020 18:18

We went back a few days earlier than we would have done in August - I think teachers went back about the 11th Aug, students on the 13th, and it should have been about a week later.

However, teachers have been told they need to be in work at the start of term, prepping for online learning from the 11th. We should have been going back Wednesday 6th, so really we're only missing wednesday, thursday and friday.

applesandpears33 · 31/12/2020 19:27

Callisto - I think you are right. I was looking at the term dates just before Christmas to update my work diary and on 18th December it said the term was finishing on 25th June.

Groovee · 31/12/2020 19:29

@Callisto1 they've obviously changed it back to the 2nd of July as it was the 25th June. They haven't told staff of this change.

Perhaps this is where my confusion lies, it's teachers that have a specified number of days, not pupils.

Ours (Angus) still says midday on Thursday 24th June.

So am I not going crazy, and there was a minimum days for pupils?

We’re in highland, so we started a week early in August (we were meant to be back on Aug18th) so we’re getting that time back in June by finishing a week earlier.

Outsidemum1 · 31/12/2020 19:53

It's only one day all pupils are missing in most councils anyway and 3 days non keyworker/ vulnerable are missing. These don't need added on- similar to snow days where schools are shut for the safety of pupils and staff getting to school. We used to have a lot of those when I was young!

Outsidemum1 · 31/12/2020 20:02

Teachers with a better memory than me- was it a week we were shut for last time due to snow? I do remember catching up on o/s work but no home learning of any kind.

No, or not in the central belt anyway. During the Beast from the East we closed on Tuesday pm and missed the Weds, Thurs and Fri. No catchup days as far as I can remember. I had the class from hell that year.

Did we not also close the day it was windy?
