Bin Collections with Newborn?

Anyone know of you can arrange an extra bin collection or get an extra bin with a newborn in the house? 3 weeks worth of nappies and one general waste bin is not going well! Got another week to go before we’re emptied again and bin is full to bursting with another bag in the house ready to go.

I know reusable nappies are an option which I’m happy to look into when baby is a bit older but at the moment he’s going through 10-12 nappies a day!

In the olden days you could just buy a bigger waste bin and I'm glad we did. We have a 3 weekly cycle for all bins except the food bin which is 2 weekly.

I had two DC in nappies for a year and managed with fortnightly collections.

OP has collections 3 weekly though

Jeez...didn’t quite expect this response 🤣 Council is closed until 5th January so was just asking on the off chance that there was a standard thing in place across the country but it seems very mixed. Website tells me I can buy more recycling bins at £45 each but doesn’t mention general waste. Our general waste bin is small compared to our standard sized recycling bins.

Definitely will look into disposables too though so thanks for the recommendations 😊

Which council.is it? I'm north lanarkshire and they give bigger recycling bins for nothing

dementedpixie · 31/12/2020 10:33

I got bigger 360L recycling bins and the standard size is 240L. I bought a bigger general waste bin years ago. I wonder if your bin is the smaller 140L one

Contact your local council. We are the same and if you actually think of how many nappies in a bin it would take up most of it if u wait 3 weeks between collection. Although she's 1 now and we got through it. I did wonder if I contacted the council they wld do it as it's human waste 🤷🏻‍♀️ I know my elderly nan had weekly collection as she was bed ridden and human waste was obviously in her bin. Carers might have organised that though.

I had two babies in nappies and we had this problem. I called the local council and was told I couldn’t have a larger bin as they had stopped doing them but I could get a clinical waste collection...basically they put two large yellow clinical waste bags through my door when they collected the general waste and then we used to fill these with nappies and the folllowing week they were collected and more bags pushed through the letter box. Was an absolute dream! I would think most councils would offer this service.

A newborn doesn't need 12 nappies a day. You're overdoing the nappy changes.

Honestly, as a veteran parent, I agree.

Disposable nappies are great at collecting fluids and will work for several pees. Don't change nappies unless they're dirty and that doesn't happen 12 times per day.

I started changing nappies during the night but a wise Midwife told me to stop and let them do their job. You get at least 6 hours from a wet nappy if it's the right size for your baby as the wetness is taken away from the skin and into the gel.

RWK29 · 01/01/2021 17:08

@Chocolatedeficitdisorder As I explained already...not that I need to justify changing my child 🙄...he can go through anything from 8-12 nappies in a 24 hour period. He is having issues with excess wind and it’s causing him to have multiple smaller dirty nappies in a day rather than one or two decent ones. I’m not going to leave my child in a dirty nappy just because it’s not “full” 🤷🏻‍♀️

You could get a couple of wraps and 24 muslins or terries for the £45 you’d spend on the extra bin then they’d sort your nappy needs for quite a while! Cloth nappies don’t have to be expensive.

I’m not going to leave my child in a dirty nappy just because it’s not “full”

Read my post again, I didn't suggest that - I said 'wet' nappies.

The dirty nappies should be changed, but you should also work on the wind issue and look at how he feeds. It's a short-term issue and even non-issue if you use some cloth nappies.

I'm in Ayrshire and they give u clear plastics bin bags and put them out once a week
