Bin Collections with Newborn?

Anyone know of you can arrange an extra bin collection or get an extra bin with a newborn in the house? 3 weeks worth of nappies and one general waste bin is not going well! Got another week to go before we’re emptied again and bin is full to bursting with another bag in the house ready to go.

I know reusable nappies are an option which I’m happy to look into when baby is a bit older but at the moment he’s going through 10-12 nappies a day!

My council give a bigger bin for 2 children in nappies but not 1. OP it does get easier - in just a month or two the number of nappies will have gone down and got more manageable. I hear you though! Good luck!

You can use cloth from newborn

dementedpixie · 30/12/2020 14:34

Do you think you have a 140L (small) or a 240L (standard) bin?

ParkheadParadise · 30/12/2020 14:36

My niece asked for an extra bin. She was told to keep a diary of everything that went in her bin for 6 weeks.
She copied her neighbour's diary( both were made up and lots added on) and got an extra bin.

A newborn doesn't need 12 nappies a day. You're overdoing the nappy changes.

It's not unusual for a newborn to feed 12 times a day and therefore poo 12 times a day.

NYCDreaming · 30/12/2020 14:58

We got an extra one when we had our DTs, I don't think they charged us for it. I'm sure the rules are different for every council.

If you need an extra bin phone the council.

I did say 10-12 😊 and yes, that is most days. Some days can be around 8 - just depends. He’s having some issues with gas so unfortunately rather than one or 2 dirty nappies a day, there are constant smaller amounts throughout the day and I’m not happy to leave him sitting in a soiled nappy 🤷🏻‍♀️ Not that I have to justify changing my child’s nappy...🤣🙈

I wish we had a bigger bin/more collections! We live rurally and get collections every 3 weeks with 4 kids and 2 adults in the house, 3 kids still in nappies and another baby on the way. We use reusables for home but do keep some disposables just in case or for travelling.

Are you able to burn any of your waste? Or recycle more? Often people's bins fill up with waste they didn't realise they can recycle or food they can compost. You may have to consider a trip to the tip if you get really stuck

Barmyfarmy · 30/12/2020 15:06

Wow policing nappy use now are we? OP if your LO gets through even 20 nappies a day it's still your business!

Congratulations on your LO though! Flowers

Itmaybeus · 30/12/2020 15:14

Our council gives larger bins if family of 5+ or in our case because we have 'extra waste' that cannot be recycled due to medical needs (we have to agree to recycling everything we can and do get spot checks).
When I had twins we were not entitled to a bigger bin just because of nappies.

kateybeth79 · 30/12/2020 15:15

My council offer a free disposable nappy collection service for families with children under 5.

AlwaysLatte · 30/12/2020 15:27

We asked for an extra bin when we had two in nappies and we still have them 10 years later as they never took the second away! Definitely worth asking (they did come out and take it very seriously, checking whether we actually needed them)

AlwaysLatte · 30/12/2020 15:28

I've just remembered at the time we had my stepson with us as well so we were a family of 5. Not sure if they give an extra bin to families under 5.

Lemondrops41 · 30/12/2020 15:31

Are you folding your nappy up, putting it in a nappy bag then squeezing the air out of the bag before tying it up? It compresses the nappy right down and it saves a lot of room in the bin. I have an 18 month old and a five year old that still wears a nappy at night and our slim bin is never more than 2/3 full.

My council will give you a bigger bin if you have two or more in nappies.

RB68 · 30/12/2020 15:39

Some councils allow clinical waste bins for babies nappies so its worth checking what your council do do.

LizzieMacQueen · 30/12/2020 17:41

Which councils give large bins to families of 5?

I'm Stirlingshire, moving to 4 weekly collection (from fortnightly) and round here, it's families of 6+ that qualify (even if not all 6 live at home). I'm dreading it.

AlwaysLatte · 30/12/2020 18:10

The second bin that was provided was a smaller one (240L compared to the 360L one that we already had).

But now that the nappy days are gone we don't abuse the bin system - we still recycle and compost far more than we throw away, but it's still useful to put out the extra bin occasionally.

anon444877 · 30/12/2020 18:19

Look at gnappies - disposable inserts with a washable cover, so no handling of most of the yucky stuff. But I second calling the council for a large family bin.

Groovee · 30/12/2020 18:52

Think in Edinburgh it's only if 5 or more live in the house.

ItsIgginningtolookalotlikeXmas · 30/12/2020 19:02

You can get a bin lock if you think other people are using your bins. I would phone up - I wanted one (pet waste!) and one of the things that would have got me one was nappies - adult or infant. (Maybe I should stick nappies on the pets instead?)

ItsIgginningtolookalotlikeXmas · 30/12/2020 19:03

Grovee loads of people around me have the larger bins even though they don't have a large family/occupants. I get bin envy every week. I think they are hangovers from before the new system came in, or maybe they had a large family once upon a time.

Groovee · 30/12/2020 19:18

@ItsIgginningtolookalotlikeXmas the bin stays with the house I think, so my mum's neighbours had 5 kids but the current owners are just the 2 of them, so they have a big bin. However they do let my mum use it if she needs to.

nightchat · 30/12/2020 19:21

Were in England but where we are if you ring council they give you an extra smaller bin for nappies ect

MrsRockAndRoll · 31/12/2020 00:09

Different rules depending on councils. Contact your council & ask if you can get a larger bin

RaspberryCoulis · 31/12/2020 10:06

East Dunbartonshire used to offer bigger bins to houses with 5 or more people living there, my neighbour has one. But not any more, they have some patronising line on their website offering a visit from a Waste Officer making sure that you are doing all you can on recycling.

They are happier to give you more recycling bins if you're finding your glass/plastic/paper is always full.
