Abernethy, Newburgh, Kinross, Milnathort, Scone, St Madoes, Errol, Inchture, Longforgan.

Which would be your most and least favourite, and why?

As in towns or schools or all of it? I live and work and have kids in one of the Towns.

Meepmeeep · 07/12/2020 17:32

What Newburgh? There’s more than one in Scotland.

ApolloandDaphne · 07/12/2020 17:37

I don't know any of them well but Kinross always seems like a nice town. Handy for the motorway, good schools and decent amenities. The rest are all a good bit smaller I think if you prefer a village rather than a town.

Friendshighschool · 07/12/2020 17:38

@Meepmeeep

Given the other areas mentioned, I am assuming the one along the road from Abernethy.
Meepmeeep · 07/12/2020 17:40

I only asked the question, no need for your snippiness is there?

HuckfromScandal · 07/12/2020 17:41

I live in the city in the middle of all of these.
Milnathort would be my first choice.
Then maybe Errol.

I lived in longforgan, but a long time ago.

I find all the others too parochial. Especially abernethy and Scone.

Ffsnosexallowed · 07/12/2020 17:44

Have friends who live in Longforgan- tiny wee place, just 1 Street. Beautiful houses, close to Dundee (which i think is a plus) but don't think there's much in it

Wbeezer · 07/12/2020 17:44

I'd go for Kinross, more going on and a bit more prosperous, Milnathort, while technically separate from Kinross is right next to it, only one field between them.
Longforgan and Inchture are handy for Dundee but I don't like that Perth to Dundee Road, it's better than it used to be but it's well known for accidents. I think Newburgh is quite quiet but some nice old houses.
Im just going with the first things that come into my head. I only know Kinross and Milnathort well.

LizzieMacQueen · 07/12/2020 17:50

Newburgh always strikes me as a bit rough. It's property prices are so much lower than Abernethy which is what, 5 minutes away.

As PP says Kinross out of those listed has most going on. If you are considering life with kids in any of these then please look at how frequent bus or train services are. Essential for older children's independence IMO.

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 07/12/2020 18:10

I'd give Newburgh a wide berth... lived there for 5 years & hated it! It's very cliquey & if you're not from Newburgh don't expect a warm welcome - unless your granny's, granny's granny on both sides was born there you're not "from Newburgh"

School had some great teachers but there was very much an attitude of it's always been that way if you raised any questions.

Friendshighschool · 07/12/2020 19:44

Apologies if it’s come across like that. It certainly wasn’t meant. I just assumed it was the local Newburgh.
ChochoCrazyCat · 07/12/2020 21:50

Interesting...good to hear from people who have lived in some of these places.
I want to be somewhere rural or semi rural, but close to the A9. With good schools, or at least not terrible ones.
I don't mind if there's not much going on as we have 2 cars so can drive to places.

OP posts:
Bloodypunkrockers · 07/12/2020 23:12

I'd avoid the carse villages

Newburgh is the only one of the list in Fife and it's not a place I've ever warmed to
Scone is good but almost a Perth suburb

Kinross and Milnathort best on the list I would say

ChochoCrazyCat · 08/12/2020 11:51

@Bloodypunkrockers Can I ask why you'd avoid them?

OP posts:
Wbeezer · 08/12/2020 14:04

Glenfarg's quite nice and in the Catchment for Kinross high now, it's pub/Hotel closed down though which is a shame. Other villages close to Kinross to consider Crook of Devon, Cleish, Powmill. Crook of Devon had the most amenities: pub, shop, school, church, petrol station etc.
Close to the A9, what about Auchterarder?

Bloodypunkrockers · 08/12/2020 15:02

There seems to be a lot of low level (and not so low level) anti social behaviour the closer you get to Dundee. I love Dundee so not being dismissive for no reason.

Most of the villages have one. Community pages on FB and Tayside police pages give a good insight.

I agree with a app what about Auchterarder or Blackford? The closer to the central belt, the more options

LizzieMacQueen · 08/12/2020 15:29

I wouldn't have thought your short list particularly close to A9 particularly the types of roads. They're a good drive away from the A9.

Blackford, Auchterarder, Dunning maybe? Or you have Dunblane, Bridge of Allan. Benefits of these are access to the railway network.

ChochoCrazyCat · 08/12/2020 16:17

Sorry I missed a 0, that should've said A90.

I have a soft spot for Dundee, although the anti social behaviour can be a problem in some parts. I wouldn't have thought that would extend to the nearby villages though? It tends to be mainly the city centre and the schemes.

The other villages suggested are nice too but for various reasons and logistics with family and work I'm only really considering the ones on my list.

The issue with Inchture, Errol, etc is that they're in the catchment for Perth High, which seems to have an issue with bullying and violence. I've got friends moving out of Errol and into Dundee for that reason, before their kids reach high school age.

I would probably opt for Invergowrie over Longforgan, then maybe look at Newport/Tayport/Wormit.

Bloodypunkrockers · 08/12/2020 16:53

If you're set on the carse then I would be looking at St Madoes end

Invergowrie and Inchture have disproportionate levels of vandalism. I'm expecting to read about baseball wielding vigilantes soon

Errol is an odd little place, I've always felt a bit uneasy there. Same vibes as Newburgh, a bit wicker man for me

For secondary, traditionally Invergowrie were given a choice of perth high or going to Dundee but the city council are changing catchments so worth a conversation there.

Puzzled at the claim about bullying at Perth High. It's no worse than any other school

ChochoCrazyCat · 08/12/2020 18:11

Interesting...I'd have thought the Perth schools would be better. Apart from Grove and Harris every school in Dundee is towards bottom of the league tables.

OP posts:
IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 08/12/2020 19:34

The Taybridgehead town kids go to Madras in St Andrew's which seems to be a good school. The new campus there should open next year too.

I'd have thought too.

I suppose everyone's got their own experiences but this is the first time I've heard of someone avoiding Perth High for a Dundee secondary.

pobparker · 08/12/2020 20:23

I Know all the Carse villages ( I live in one of them)
All the Primary schools seem fairly good , I would second the Perth High comments , plus the dreaded school bus adds a lot of time to the School day
St Madoes - Handy for Perth, has the newish Madoch centre & cafe for activities & community groups ,

Errol- used to be very parochial -There is still a bit of this , however the large amount of new housing has lessened it and I think has improved the village - Good community centre (pre covid) , nice walking paths down to the river.

Inchture - Quaint main street, Good hotel/pub & village shop- Good community spirit , currently seems to have a bit of a problem with teenage vandalism
Longforgan - pretty but also pretty quiet

I wouldn't disregard Invergowrie either, , you can be in Dundee in minutes. It still has a larger village feel ,has community groups , pub , and Indian takeaway. It does have some problems with teenagers , Currently pupils go to secondary in Dundee , but this is under review

I would pick Invergowrie, with my least favourite St Madoes (but that is probably because I much prefer Dundee to Perth)

Wbeezer · 08/12/2020 22:59

Kinross and Milnathort have had an increase in teenage vandalism, i think lockdown is mostly responsible, although it's a very small number of kids involved but a lot of moaning on the community Facebook page.
