"Tightening the Edges"

I've just read somewhere that Nicola will be announcing some tightening of the rules around the Christmas period.
What do people think that will mean?

Did you not understand my post? Or are you genuinely saying you don't trust a cross-party group of politicians with support from external experts (academic, business, third sector) to be able to create a credible white paper?

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/11/2020 13:38

@TheCrowsHaveEyes, your post wasn't there when I was typing, I was referring to the last white paper from the referendum.

I'd be much more trusting of something that came after appropriate rigours of challenge from all sides.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 27/11/2020 13:38

When people don't have faith in their fellow men and women, I think it says more about them.

I completely disagree. If someone has shown by their actions that they are not trustworthy, I think it would be extremely foolish to trust them with something as important as the future of the country. The SNP have demonstrated over and over that they want independence at any cost, and while they pay lip service to being open and transparent, when difficult questions arise they cover up and deflect. I cannot see them signing up to any document that is remotely honest about the challenges of independence. I do agree that Boris seems to be universally unpopular though, even amongst Tory voters. Thank goodness he's not permanent and can be voted out in a few years.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/11/2020 13:39

I'd like to vote based on an eyes wide open situation.

I actually don't have a problem with paying more taxes, i'd just like to not see them pissed up the wall!

anon444877 · 27/11/2020 13:44

I see no evidence boris himself even really wanted the job or intends to stay long.

You could have the best and brightest brains in the world working on economics post independence but they aren't magicians, it's credible to say Scotland will have to cut spending by 20 percent plus fund startup costs of £x in addition to those spending cuts.

It's credible - is it desirable?

anon444877 · 27/11/2020 13:47

I'd like to pay more tax for more services, not more tax to fund start up costs for independent Scotland or just to cover the shortfall caused by leaving the uk, whilst services still get slashed.

TheCrowsHaveEyes · 27/11/2020 13:48

@WaxOnFeckOff fwiw I agree with you about the last white paper. It's why I think any replacement should be cross-party and credible. It's a serious question for the country and if independence comes, I think we could guarantee that all the political parties would want to be represented in a Scottish parliament/government so they should all participate and contribute in the process. I'm sure there would be quibbling about the assumptions that projections were based on but - if they are all there in black and white - then the electorate can decide which assumptions they find most feasible. I'm a fan of facts and honesty about assumptions in modelling.
The playground politics of name-calling and division shouldn't have a place in modern politics imo.

rookiemere · 27/11/2020 13:53

I was naively happy about the change in tax bands - even though I scrape into the higher one - I thought it was the mark of a progressive society. Strangely the extra money hasn't translated - or at least not that I'm aware of - into better state education or welfare provision.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/11/2020 13:56

rookie, our family stayed pretty much the same tax wise, I pay more, DH pays less, I think we more or less broke even.

Brex5hit · 27/11/2020 16:42

Re Scotland's exports, trade issues with Scotland would be devastating for an isolated UK economy. An independent Scotland in the EU should apply the Norwegian model which will allow free trade between the non EU/ EU member.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/11/2020 16:52

Scotland in the EU as an independent is a pipe dream unless you buy into the SNPs own stunt with the lights? And they wouldn't be setting their own terms either.

Brex5hit · 27/11/2020 16:59

And re the death rate - up to today, Scotland has 647 per million and England 880 per million.

The SG should have put stricter controls in earlier.

Brex5hit · 27/11/2020 17:00

A pipe dream? I would politely disagree.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/11/2020 17:07

Yet interestingly Sweden with little restrictions is 660?

ApolloandDaphne · 27/11/2020 17:14

I will be raging if she changes the rules. We have now got everything organised so we are not breaking any rules at all as it stands. DD2 would have loved to stay longer than 23rd-27th but as she is flying from London we decided to be cautious and book those dates for her travel. DD1 is arriving by car on the 23rd. DM is already part of our bubble so can be here. I have worked out how to organise the sleeping arrangements and household to maintain a reasonable distance at all times. I am doing EVERTHING I can to keep as all as safe as can be and we are all happy with the plan. I cannot be changed!!!!

Brex5hit · 27/11/2020 17:37

Scotland has 2.5 times the population density of Sweden. A 'carry on as normal' strategy would have been beyond catastrophic here.
